One of a group of unaccompanied motets by Bruckner (the most famous being Locus iste) Os justi is a little gem, unfolding gradually over 5 minutes of sweeping dynamics and delicious suspensions.
Recorded in St Augustine, Kilburn by kind permission of the Vicar & Churchwardens.
Sopranos: Fiona Fraser, Hannah King, Victoria Meteyard, Josephine Stephenson, Katie Trethewey, Emma Walshe
Altos: Hannah Cooke, Martha McLorinan, Eleanor Minney, Elisabeth Paul
Tenors: Jeremy Budd, Nicholas Madden, Nicholas Todd, Toby Ward
Basses: Joseph Edwards, William Gaunt, Andrew Mahon, Owain Park, Simon Whiteley
Produced by Jonathan Coates.
安东·布鲁克纳(Anton Bruckner)-奥斯蒂(Os justi)-特内布雷(Tenebrae),由奈杰尔·肖特(Nigel Short)指挥

Imagine this song back in the day. People with no way to record music and only hearing this after travelling many miles just to hear this. They must have revered these singers as just short of angels. Truly magnificent!

Mozart transcribed Miserere Mei, Deus by memory after only hearing it twice. He then sent his manuscript to an English publisher. At the time, private ownership of that piece was banned by the church. His publication forced the church to lift the ban. Imagine that, though. Only hearing the piece twice, and being able to jot it down perfectly.

A better word: they are gifted by God with vocal perfection, just as Bruckner was gifted by God to compose. Gifts of all kinds, some used, some ignored, some using their gifts yet never thanking God. It is always wonderful to hear the results of these gifts come together in works of art.

I have been a Bruckner enthusiast for more than 15 years and still can hardly believe that the gigantic symphonies and these precious motets were composed by one and the same person. I love both worlds of Bruckner :-) The interpretation of the Tenebrae Choir is perfect as ever!

In 1982, my university choir stood in the spot at St. Florian where Bruckner first directed his choir in this work. We then went into the catacombs below the monastery and stood around Bruckner's casket, with all the skulls of priests lining the wall and sang it again. I cried as I listened to this for the first time. Blessings to you all.

Josephine is defo a draw-card as anyone who knows her face will know her voice and should hence also know that _whatever_ it is going to be very well done. Wish I knew who the man with the booming voice is. He has red? hair and very dark eyes. He has sung with Tenebrae before in _Miserere Mi, Deus._ (I think I got the title right haha). Having spent twenty minutes viewing postings from the USA - all of them bearing witness to the sheer lunacy of the views upheld by a significant proportion of the populace; and having, thereby, become increasingly depressed with the state of mankind, I have accidentally landed on this performance of sheer beauty and perfection; a flickering candle of hope in a mad world which seems to have lost its bearings. Where all that is brash threatens to annihilate the delicate, the fragile and the supremely beautiful. I thank you for this, and all your postings on ‘utube’; which, one might tentatively hope, will bring about a wider appreciation of this genre, and in so doing, enrich the lives of those who are fortunate enough to make the discovery. Long may you prosper in your noble work.

English translation - Ps 89:20 + extra: The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks what is just. The law of his God is in his heart: and his feet do not falter. Alleluia.[8] I have found David, my servant; I have anointed him with my holy oil. Alleluia.[9] Latin: Os justi meditabitur sapientiam: et lingua ejus loquetur judicium. Lex Dei ejus in corde ipsius: et non supplantabuntur gressus ejus. Alleluia. Inveni David servum meum, oleo sancto meo unxi eum. Alleluia.

@@TinaYWu-lw1qx I guess that is "Baroque" (?)......the choir DOES interpret older compositions as well and perform all pieces beautifully, don't you think?💛Os justi WAB 30, is a sacred motet composed by Anton Bruckner in 1879. Os Justi is a Gregorian chant used as gradual of the Commune Doctorum.........thank you for the citation.

The lyrics are from Psalm 37:30-31 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks what is just. The law of God is in his heart; and his steps will not be impeded. Alleluia. Os justi meditabitur sapientiam, et lingua ejus loquetur judicium. Lex Dei ejus in corde ipsius: et non supplantabuntur gressus ejus. Alleluia.

Not knowing where we come from, not knowing where we are going, conscience, a soul, back in the day these voices, these vocal works, the very churches they sang in gave people something tangible and they believed in the Almighty and the fleeting beauty of life and the promise of eternal. not so much nowadays.

After fifty years, I can still sing the first tenor part. A little gem indeed, comparable to Josquin. And a wonderful, courageously broad performance by Tenebrae. Thank you. Cheers from snowy Vienna, Scott
