He did not beat Pernell Whitaker. It was a robbery. Sweet P was the champ. Oscar did not take it to the champ. Now that Shane Mosley fight, Oscar got robbed. But the Las Vegas bets were so lopsided. Oscar had to lose some how.
He was a great fighter! Fought the very best without being scared of losing which rarely happens with the current boxers who all want to be undefeated.
He ruined his legacy by refusing rematches with Sturm, pea, and quartey. Don't feel bad for his bad decision losses to tito and mosley. It called karma
joseph slemp The whole organisational structure of the sport hurts the sport. The promotors need to be relegated to just being promoters and the influential dominance needs to be given to Not For Profit sporting organisations. Like a central board to the different commissions, associations and other international boxing organisations. Promoters being able to control the lions share of the financial side of things is terminal to the sport being purely a sport. But like democratic parties having major financial backers that allow them to even gain power in the first place, who do you think the party will serve? The voter or the financier? Well in boxing, the fan is the voter, the promoters are the democratic parties and the sponsors are the financial ‘donators’ or backers. The judges are basically the parties parliamentary representatives, again, you think the bills they pass are purely in the interest of the voter, or taxpayer? Or more so for the financial backer of the democratic party they are part of???? Oscar understands this better than most which is why he has sold out of the sports ideals in pursuit of addressing his own financial interests. A true germ of the modern day sport. Cant stand him.
@ismee Very well stated. I never could stand Oscar. He was a privelaged kid in the boxing community from the time he was in diapers so to speak. I lost all respect for him when he disrespected an old Julio Cesar Chavez. A man who earned everything he achieved the hard way, the true way, the old way. When Oscar got old and Pacman gave him a beating he gave Oscar the respect Oscar never gave Julio. Oscar also once ignorantly said “Blacks can’t take it to the body.”. How satisfying it was for me then when Hopkins stopped Oscar with a single shot to the body and dropped him like a coin sack. Oscar has never had any class and has always been overrated. He came up beating a bunch of old men and managed to lose to every top fighter in his era. I will atleast give him credit where it’s due in that he fought all the dangerous opponents. He never cowered away like Mayweather and many others. I give him that.
@@muntee33 excellent post. Boxing the only sport I know of where the 'winner' can lose. Pathetic in all these years it will not get sorted.. They talk about corruption been rife in the 50s still is as far im concerned.
a gladiator who did something nobody will ever repeat.win the REAL HW Title twice ,20 yrs. apart.if u told someone that would happen when Patterson won a 2nd world title(1st. man to do it ) in a yr.,they'd have said u were crazy.
I also had it 116 to 112 for floyd. That pernell fight was difficult to score because both fighters struggled to get off. Like you said, a judging nightmare
Oscar could've been carried out on a stretcher and still won the Sturm fight. Nothing was going to prevent the Bernard Hopkins fight and all the money it would bring.
@badgershands “That decision looked taylor-made to set up De La Hoya versus Hopkins. (De La Hoya) got the benefit of high charity.” Ian Darke of Sky Sports, commenting on the decision
@@sagesarabia5053 Yes! The funny thing is that someone started yelling "BODYSHOT" over and over about 10 seconds before the KO. Then Bernard and Oscar go into business together right after the fight. LOL. Boxing can be hilarious at times.
ODLH is one of my favs of all time. A lot of people bag him out but he was always entertaining. I really liked his upright and walk forward style, he threw good power punches from both hands and had a wicked jab. Didn't look so flash in ladies underwear but we can cut him some slack on that front, as I don't either.
andrewford80 he was great but he loses pts for beating one of my all time favs way past his prome. Julio Caesar chavez. Not Oscars fault but I took it personally.
Trinidad had already busted Vargas up badly that to me ended el feroz even though he still stuck around another 5or6yrs..he ballooned in weight n was a star that burnt twice as bright but burnt out twice as quickly.. When Oscar beat him it was a close fight til de la Hoya got him outta there, Tito barring afew rounds controlled the fight n that's when Vargas was at his best beating quartey more decisively than Oscar, Vargas was 21? when he won his first title in 98 n was basically finished by by 06..the 2nd fight v Mosley he was terrible totally shot.. shouldve been retired after Oscar..
Rich Muttsmusic all of his fights were mostly big and he fought most of his big fights against hall of famers in their prime something nobody has done since him
Memories of watching these fights with my father years ago. He had Pernell winning by a few rounds, I had Oscar winning by a point. Father has Ike winning by one point, and I had Oscar and there was arguing. Tito I had Oscar winning by a bunch, and my dad laughed cause Oscar put the foot off the gas way too soon.
Huge respect mate, you make some great videos...I'm currently working my way through all the older ones I missed and I'm really enjoying your style and the quality of the analysis. Like I said: huge respect.
I rewatched it a few years back and didn't think it was the crazy robbery i remembered at the time. I believe on the rewatch i had it closer to a draw as well.
Yall must be blind then if u thought It was close cuz Oscar schooled him the 1st 9 rounds. I usually don't like to call fights robbery cuz most could go either way but that was a complete robbery. Tito did nothing even the 11 and 12th when oscar started to run tito did nothing. Tito was deer in the headlights all night getting lit up with jabs and combos he couldn't deal with Oscars movement.
I had Pernell winning that fight as well..Pernell had in my opinion the most controversial loses in the history of boxing. Very disheartening. Loved both fighters but Sweet Pea is truly underrated.
True story Rummy, in 2004 Oscar called my father's escort agency in Las Vegas right before the Felix Sturm fight. He was looking for some girls to party with and my woman at the time was asked for it and she partied with Oscar. When she was done with work she called Oscar and I talked to him for a few minutes and wished him luck in the fight it was probably 10 days away. Oscar talked to me like a normal human being even though it was very awkward. I told him I was a big fan and watched all of his fights and always rooted for him. Everyone talks bad about Oscar now but I wish the fighters around today were like Oscar. He fought everyone he possibly could and he fought them in their prime who else can you say does that nowadays? Oscar was a true gentleman to me and no matter what I'm going to be a fan. Love your videos! I often think when I watch Oscar fight imagine if he was 100% dedicated? You never know how great he could have been and he was great but he could have been unbelievable.
@@josemezatorrez I had the 1st fight for JMM. The 2nd fight for Manny Pacquiao. 3rd fight a draw. And the 4th obviously for JMM. (Btw your the prime example of people overusing the word “robbed” robbed means there should be no doubt the guy won. But the first and third fights between Pacquiao and JMM could have gone either way)
I rewatch the sweet pea robbery whenever i start getting optimistic about my life. The commission was behind him so tough. Oscar was a good fighter he just wasn’t great.
Great unbiased reporting. I am now a subscriber to your channel. Thank you for taking the time to put together a great channel!! True reporting and commentation at its best. You should be an official professional comentator
Sure Oscar was unlucky against Trinidad... But when you box all night on the back foot and gift your opponent the last 4 rounds, don't be surprised when the judges burn you. Oscar has himself to blame for that one.
Anyone notice the size of those big red gloves Oscar made Floyd wear. Look like heavyweight gloves. He may have hurt oscar in that i believe 5th round when he landed the springing punch of the ropes and oscar did seem to drop down a little even with the big gloves.
Great, great, great Channel!!!Love from Germany and keep the good job.The documentary about the top 4 boxers of the 80s, was just one of the best boxing videos ever!!!!!
Great video, I agree with you about 90% , GRACIAS. Please do Maywheter and also the fights between Marquez vs Pacman thanks you.

The Sturm fight, Oscar had no experience with someone with his size and reach....it surprised him, he was so used to being longer and bigger than his opponents.....Oscar clearly lost this fight; but with a mega fight scheduled with B-Hop, they gave it to DLH.....
delahoya avoided Forrest, winky, mckart, margarito, cotto and a younger Mayweather who called him out. he refused to give quartey a rematch ran like a bitch against Trinidad barely got by Whitaker Mosley owned him Mayweather stymied him
De La Hoya beat Mosley the second fight and beat Trinidad. I thought he lost to Strum and Quartey. A lot of his big fights were extremely close. Had these fights all been scored completely fairly, even with the loses, DLH’s historical standing would have been higher.
Great video i love Oscar De La Hoya he is a legend in boxing

DLH victory over Quartey is correct; he floored him twice, was knocked down once.....he landed many more big shots, he won that fight....there were times Oscar was beating the hell out of him on the ropes and in the corner; Ike never did that to Oscar at all....
One thing I respect about Oscar, is he's pretty honest if he thought he won or lost a fight. He was almost acting like he lost against Strum, and admitted Sugar Shane won their first fight. He got robbed against Sugar Shane the second fight and beat Trinidad, though he should have put the peddle to the metal against Trinidad and sought to finish strong. He didn't seem to have the same stamina after the Quartey fight. If he got the nod against Trinidad, his career wouldn't have been as enigmatic. Still a great fighter. He was sort like Evander Holyfield. He fought basically EVERYONE in his prime and fought them in THEIR primes. I put him just a notch below Sugar Ray Leanord, but still a great fighter.
I scored the De La Hoya vs Trididad bout a DRAW, 114-114. I had Oscar leading in the fight 6 rounds to 3 after 9 rounds, then Oscar gave away the last three rounds, making it a 6-6 draw. you have a great insight on boxing, love your channel.
I love you videos, dude. Maybe it's the accent, but your voice does a lot to create an environment of some old school NFL films presents-type boxing documentary.
it wasn't a knockdown when he went down with Pernell. when you look at the aerial view you can see Oscars left foot get stuck with Pernell's foot. That's why Oscar got the decision.
Anon Anon I thought it was obvious, Rummy still thought it was a knockdown even with the overhead angle,it was a clear trip,I know the judges or ref wouldn't have seen that but it was clear to us,from that angle!
Rick's Giggle I just watched it from all angles. Id call it a knock down because the punch knocked him of balance. He couldnt pull his foot back because the punch stunned him.
There’s an informal tradition in boxing: no matter how well a fighter does, judges can and will take two points for “excessive running.” It’s unspoken, but it exists. ODLH probably lost at least three rounds on that alone, and Trinidad straight-up beat ODLH in four others. Sugar Ray Leonard always made sure that, when he was on his bicycle, he was throwing unmitigated power shots and putting together nice combos to go with them. That’s why he always won, even when he should have lost (i.e. the second Hearns fight). Oscar usually had the jabs (and sometimes the combos), but the power was hit-and-miss.
The Sturm fight was robbery in front of your eyes. Of these fights besides Sturm that really pissed me off was the Whitaker fight I’m not saying this because Whitaker just passed away (RIP) in champ. It’s because Delahoya looked really bad in that fight. He was confused he looked amateurish. He couldn’t handle Whitaker plain and simple. His corner was confused and Delahoya NEVER dominated Whitaker at all in that fight. Whitaker deserved to keep his title. In the post fight interview in the ring Delahoya said he’d give Whitaker a rematch. I’m sure his management team told him in privacy to shut up and keep the title and RUN.
Gotta disagree with sweet pea being at or near his peak..in his previous fight sweet pea had to come from behind to ko diosbelys hurtado a heroic comeback for sure, but the de la Hoya fight was signed n sealed yet Whitaker still had to pull it out the bag, also sweet pea never had another win of note, a 93 Whitaker was the p4p master who 'beat' Chavez, so Oscar fought a Whitaker at 75% of his best. Props to both because I have Oscar as a great fighter but sweet pea all time great... Still a great piece as Im new to rummys corner I'll certainly be subscribing n checking out your previous Vids.. PS sweet pea had 2 tough fights v Wilfred Riviera b4 hurtado so he was imo on the slide 2yrs b4 Oscar.. Still all opinion eh.. We know wherever he is now he's schooling someone on how to hit n not get hit, him n Vernon Forrest having a great time with Henry Armstrong and all the other greats that have passed
To be fair, he never said that Whitaker was at or near his peak when he fought Oscar. What he said was, at the time, Whitaker was near or at the top of everybody's pound-for-pound rankings. But I agree, Whitaker's prime/peak was prolly '89, when he won F.O.Y. This fight was 8 years later, he was 33 years old, and in the twilight of his career.
I think that was more down to Diosbelys being a difficult style for Whittaker. He was very defensive in that fight and Whittaker is used to being chased, not chasing.
Russ Hawkins Poor Lil Sweet Pea's eye that was damn near completely shut would disagree with your he couldn't hit Whitaker even with his hands down statement. Matter of fact Oscar had Whitaker on Queer street at least twice if I remember correctly.
I love how you make up history. The eye doesn't mean shit. Your ribs don't show injuries. Ask Oscar about the body shot Hopkins dropped him with. Did you see an injury? I'm sure you're smarter than that comment.
Russ Hawkins Talk about being smarter than your comment how the hell do you thing a eye swells?? Shit doesn't happen on its own. It's from repeatedly getting hit. Maybe if he put his hands up that wouldn't have happened. And why bring up the Hopkins fight?? This is about Oscar and Whitaker why even deflect attention away from that. Also you obviously don't know shit about boxing or you've never been hit with a liver shit. That shot placed perfectly, no matter how great a chin or heart you have, that liver shot is so damn painful all you can do is wither around on the ground like a bitch because it stops you from getting up.
JohnnyBur I've gained more boxing knowledge in my earlier years than you have in your entire life. You obviously aren't that bright. The Hopkins comment wasn't a deflection. It was an example of a fighter being stopped by a body shot without a visible injury. Meaning it's a more devastating injury than a swollen eye. I'm sorry that went over your head. You obviously are the one that doesn't know shit about boxing. Oscar also knows he lost that fight. As usual, he was given the gift win like so many of his other fights. Now you can go work on your learning disability.
Rummy you giving too much credit to de LA Hoya in the Mayweather fight his aggressiveness wasn't affective at any point in the fight he was flurrying but missing everything it was a dominant win for Floyd I had it 9-3 I don't think 8-4 is bad but the rounds oscar won were close rounds that oscar only edged u can even make a case for 10 rounds to 2 or 9-2 1 even oscar stayed competitive but was being outboxed throughout the fight very clearly it kills me when ppl act like this fight was so close it could have gone either way or worse when they say oscar won it you scored it good but how was oscar ahead after 7 only clear round he won was 6 , rounds 2, 4 , 7 were maybe close but u can only really give oscar 2 of those at best IMO
oscar was the kind of boxer that fought all of the boxers that was about to hang up their gloves cuz they was over the hill. they just took the fight away from pernell sweet pea whitaker. he couldn't keep up with sweet pea and he surly couldn't hit him. RIP SWEET PEA!!!!!!!
I agree, but his glove touched the ground after a punch. Regardless if it was a shot that actually hurt him or not, it should be counted as a knockdown.
