Oscars 2021: A Surprising, Low-Key Ceremony Goes Completely Haywire - For Your Consideration

On this week’s For Your Consideration, Collider’s awards experts Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff and Jeff Sneider recap the 2021 Oscars, from inevitable winners like Nomadland and its director, Chloé Zhao, to upsets in both of the lead acting categories.
Before delving into the winners, the FYC hosts discuss the unprecedented ceremony itself, which saw producers Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins decide to end the show with Best Actor rather than Best Picture, leading to an awkward anticlimax. While the gang appreciates the fact that the producers took a big swing, the timing was certainly suspect, and the switcheroo did not pay off, as Anthony Hopkins wasn't even there to accept his award, and presenter Joaquin Phoenix was left looking like a deer in headlights.
Elsewhere, Scott and Jeff relive their big bet this year after Jeff's pick Frances McDormand held off stiff competition from SAG Award winner Viola Davis and presumed favorite Carey Mulligan as well as young ingenues Andra Day and Vanessa Kirby. Perri also got a chance to gloat, as she predicted that Mank would beat out Nomadland for Best Cinematography.

The lesson the producers MUST learn from the blunder is that nothing about the show should ever rest on an assumption of who is going to win in any category.

Hopkins performance in “The Father” is probably my favorite performance since Daniel Day Lewis in “There Will Be Blood.” I wanted him to win and I predicted him to win, but the producers destroyed the show and it resulted in disrespect towards Chadwick Boseman and Anthony Hopkins. I felt terrible that they set the Chadwick win up like that for it not to pan out. The “In Memoriam” and Best Picture presentation were shockingly disrespectful. Perri is spitting straight fire and she is 100% correct. What they did to “Nomadland” was disrespectful. Also, Hopkins is an elderly man with higher risk of getting COVID and the oldest Best Actor winner ever. Please everyone give him a break for not being present. His acceptance spech this morning was beautiful.

You really expect an 83 year old to be up at 3-4am for the possibility that he won an Oscar, especially when that 83 year old is Anthony Hopkins, a man who has historically not shown up to the Oscars?!

My biggest takeaway last night was that I was able to watch the Oscars with some film geek friends of mine. It was one of the few social gatherings I've done in the past year. I was just happy to fill out a ballot, eat some food, and watch the Oscars with fellow film geeks.

I agree with Perri's final sentiments: let's move on but learn from this and never let it happen again. The award order mishap was misguided even if Boseman had won. Next year I want a comedian host. I want some funny presenters. I want clips of the nominees. I want song performances during the show. Given the circumstances I realize why did not get a lot of that this year but yeah most of the press is negative today b/c of the bad production choices and it takes away from the deserving winners (Nomadland, Chloe, Frances. Yay!) Looking forward to that FYC theme song next season...

Riz Ahmed also beat Chadwick Boseman one to one at the Spirit Awards - Hopkins was not nominated. It confirmed that Chadwick was not as secure of a front runner as people including me thought he was.

Frances and Anthony won because they were the undisputed Best. They were leaps ahead of the competition if you base it on talent. I'm glad the Academy didn't puss out and did the right thing. Also like Jeff I put bets on them and won some money.

Perri hit the nail on the head, indeed. I felt the In Memoriam section was on fast forward, disrespectful to all those who passed. I thought putting the Best Picture winner in front of the acting awards was very wrong, to say the least. Definitely disrespectful to Chloé Zhao and the producers of Nomadland. And, distracting, because I was wondering what happened. Then, they end it on Best Actor and Chadwick Boseman, who I wanted to win, doesn't. Anthony Hopkins isn't even there. The Academy accepts on his behalf and the show ends unceremoniously and anticlimactically.

After a lot of thought I think what it might have come down to with Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis is that Ma Rainey was more of an ensemble and Viola and Chadwick perhaps belonged in supporting whereas Anthony Hopkins was The Father and Frances Mcdormand drove Nomadland with her entire performance. Those movies were those performances. Imagine if Lakeith Stanfield was in the Lead Actor race (he was the lead of Judas and the Black Messiah) and it was Boseman vs Kaluuya in the supporting race. I mean if Mahershala Ali was supporting in Green Book, Chadwick was supporting in Ma Rainey.

@@maxipazz8214 I read it back. I also rewatched Ma Rainey. I do think Chadwick and Viola are more part of an ensemble than being traditional leads. Almost like The Godfather or The Help. I still don't understand how Chadwick is lead and Mahershala Ali is supporting in Green Book. That was more of a lead role to me. But at the end of the day I think the Academy just went with what it considered the two best lead performances and that was AH & FM.

Chadwick was never as strong a frontrunner as everyone made out. His most high profile loss was obviously at the BAFTA but he had been losing smaller awards such as the Indie Spirit and Gotham award to Riz Ahmed all season. I'm not trying to devalue his performance but it is shocking that the producers felt so arrogant that they could Best Actor last and it to work out how they wanted. Shouldn't have happened that way if Chadwick had won. It was disrespectful to everyone involved, Anthony Hopkins, Chadwick Boseman and, of course, the entire crew of Nomadland. Let this never happen again.

Quo Vadis Aida could’ve been a real spoiler because it was a baldly emotional and utterly gripping film about the horrific tragedy of the Bosnian genocide in 1995. It won the spirit awards and also got nominated for Director at BAFTAs. But the fact that Vinterberg got the best Director nomination pushed that film over the edge, and I’m glad since I love Vinterberg for directing The Celebration and The Hunt, less so for this film.

I never thought of it as elegant harmonious moment...(did he expect these producers to hold grudge on national tv and act out?) what the hell people actually remember it that way? I dont think so. The speeches were long. It started strong. I agree that it was not a good idea for them to assume that Chadwick would win and that would be the big climax of the show. Although, I wanted him to win as the cherry on top of his legacy. I was let down.

The lack of clips especially for costumes, hair and makeup and visual effects was baffling, the in memoriam was so rushed, the choice of presenters was strange, barely having any jokes, no musical numbers, and having Best Picture not be last were all terrible choices, it seems all of the praise for Contagion went all the way to Steven Soderbergh's head. Netflix will never win Best Picture. Until they behave like Amazon Studios and put their movies in Cinemas first then transfer them for streaming at a later date. Roma should have clearly Won Best Picture. Yet they were petty and went with Green Book. Which isn't a bad movie and the backlash it receives even to this day is harsh & ridiculous. It was not a better movie than Roma.

I do have to correct what Scott said Youn is not the first asian actress to win an oscar for acting. Miyoshi Umeki at the 30th academy awards was the first asian actress to win an oscar in the supporting actress category for Sayonara. Just a reminder.

I wonder if Disney/ABC put pressure to do leading male last. It felt like a corporate decision and Disney has gotten a lot bigger and more successful in the last 10-15 years. Every company does shady things and this one has become a giant among it’s competitors and I could see them having a mandate.

The train station locale was interesting and I do like that they were thinking outside of the box but I hope the traditional and correct order of presenting the awards returns next year. Please get a host next year! Show clips of the films and bring back a montage or two. A no brainer would have been to show clips of films featuring movie theatres like Cinema Paradiso, the Player, the Last Picture Show, etc. --because movie theatres have been hurt most in the film industry from the pandemic. You all are great! However, I knew some of you were WAY overestimating Viola Davis. I love her and she was very good in Ma Rainey’s, but it’s the weakest of her four Oscar bids. She’s my 4th favorite at that lineup at best.

Thank you Scott, Perri, Jeff and Thadd for your honest, impassioned critique of the ceremony and for your inciteful analysis of the whole award season. I've made this comment before but while we wait for the new FYC season to begin please please PLEASE consider doing a weekly show about new (or old) films for which you want to raise awareness or about the big film industry stories of the week or frankly anything film-related. Can't wait to hear Jeff croon the new FYC theme song!

Scott..An Attitude of Gratitude is always appreciated, but your Passion appeared to spill over into feeling personally attacked when Perry expressed herself strongly. As Moderator, Kindness, and Appreciation for all viewpoints should take you out of the equation, and be met with a less heated response, which was squirm worthy.

One thing I got is there is no such thing as a sure thing or lock. If Bozeman did not die no question Hopkins would have been the favorite but again no sure thing. These so called Oscar experts over analyzing everything. Every year what I hear from the “experts” is the chatter from Oscar voters....huh?

The biggest problems were ofc how they ended it and the rushed in memoriam, but like Scott mentioned why couldn’t they’ve just cut down the 5 minute speeches to give room for the original song performances

The 'Moonlight' mess up was mainly because they had two actors presenting who weren't up on the current stars/movies, etc...ANYONE following the movies and the Oscar race would have known Emma Stone wasn't the producer of La La Land- she was the Best Actress- read that and said- 'Oh- this says Emma Stone- I think it's the wrong envelope' But Warren hemmed and hawed for several seconds and Faye stepped in in, saw the words LaLa Land on the card and just blurted it out.

Honestly I checked out of the Oscars when they stopped showing clips for performances and then continued to strip away bits of the show. Sometimes what gets me to check out these films that I missed is seeing the actor or actress who's nominated. Now it's just reading a piece of paper and that's it.

The Oscar 2021 ceremony was meh and messy.. Best Picture not in last?!.. in Best Actor should be a tie between Anthony Hopkins and Chadwick Boseman.. Oscars 2021 producers are not great originazing an award ceremony And In Memoriam was disrespected for the love ones left.. I totally agreeing to Perri.. Go Perri! preach gurl

Right, the in memoriam was horrible the Sag Awards one was much more beautiful and emotional... also, they didnt include the wonderfull Jessica Walters, who not only was a tv legend, she had a great career in films, so that made me hated even more

I agree that the in memorium was super fast, and I did not like that. But, I wonder if the producers wanted to fit as many as possible, so that they wouldn’t hear, why did they leave off so and so the next day.

I have been watching the Oscars for over 40yrs, and this year's show was, without a doubt, THE WORST EVER !!! Even without any songs or dancing, the show still lasted over 3hours !!! C'mon academy...... I LOVE THE MOVIES - you can do BETTER !!!

Defund the Oscars! Just kidding but they do need a complete overhaul. Not mad at the voters as this marks another year where they got more stuff right than wrong. I thought the location and decorations were nice but everything else was underwhelming. In a Oscar year with 3 period piece Chicago movies that didn't do the city justice, I should've been prepped for disappointed. And Del Roy Lindo was robbed! Great show FYC, you guys should be on TV! That wasn't a bad bet Mantz!

Yeah they bet the farm on Boseman, even Anthony was thinking he wouldn't win. They even had Best actress bumped up ( Actress always goes before Best Bic). Yeah the Memoriam was a train wreck, including a long pause on first and last 2, everyone else was going too fast. Those producers should never be call back.

The BAFTA board must be so pissed since one of their key goals this year is NOT to act as just another precursor to the Oscars and they did their best to mix up the nominees with this random jury process. Flip side is of course - when you are a merited winner, you will win anywhere!

Can’t believe this season is over for another year 😭 I’m going to miss you 3 so much!! Can’t wait until season 4! I also was left feeling pretty icky after the ceremony. Regardless of who won/ lost I think best picture always needs to go last. Ending with actor was just so anticlimactic. I haven’t seen The Father yet but I thought Chadwick Boseman was amazing and deserving of the Oscar win. This is coming from someone who hasn’t loved him in any other performance, so I’d like to think I’m not biased. The academy had the opportunity to vote for a black man who is so beloved by so many people, and has done so much for the industry, and it was his last chance for an Oscar. Instead they went with an old white man who already has an Oscar. Regardless of who’s performance was better (which is subjective) I do feel these are extreme circumstances and the academy had the chance to do something special but chose not to 😫 I feel similarly to Carrey Mulligan not winning. I preferred her performance and it would’ve been nice to see such a bold performance be awarded.

Don’t care anymore. I’m certainly not bothered about whether they are observing social distancing or not at the awards ceremony considering that stuff is what has killed film and entertainment this last two years. Where was the Hollywood concern for the cinemas themselves which are dying?

Mcdormand did encourage everyone to flock to see all of these movies in theaters once we can. I was surprised no one else mentioned the value and joy of the theatrical experience. I was disappointed that that didn’t happen

Jeff - The Irishman and Roma were great movies. Perri - Da 5 Bloods and Ma Rainey just did not have the support. They were divisive movies. The fact that delroy Lindo got snubbed but Chadwick got in at sag shows that it lacked support
