Oscar Nominations 2021: Surprises, Snubs and History-Making Nods - Collider For Your Consideration

On this week’s For Your Consideration, Collider’s awards experts Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff and Jeff Sneider weigh in on all the Oscar nominations, from Mank, which led the field with 10 nominations, to the surprising snubs of both One Night in Miami and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom in the Best Picture category.
It seems that Judas and the Black Messiah was the late-breaking entry that threw a wrench into awards season, as not only did the film earn nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, but it also picked up a pair of Supporting Actor noms for its two stars, Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield. Apparently, the two title characters were supporting each other the whole time. Meanwhile, Glenn Close edged out Ellen Burstyn for a Supporting Actress nomination, and David Fincher did make the cut for Best Director, though the real story of that category is how Chloe Zhao and Emerald Fennell made history, as the Academy has never nominated two female filmmakers in the same year before.
The next FYC episode will arrive following the SAG Awards in early April, so be sure to give this one a watch or listen since it's the last one for a few weeks. I somewhat agree with Scott on this. Unlike The Wife, HE has another Oscar nomination besides Close's performance. I'd argue Rami Malek was able to pull the same outcome out (granted: he was in a BP nominee & had almost swept the televised events). I actually like the performance by Glenn Close in the film, despite hating everything else in the film besides the makeup work. I don't have Glenn Close as my #1 pick, but she's in my top three with Youn Yuh-jung & Maria Bakalova in the mix as well. Delroy Lindo is more deserving than Oldman, but Jeff is right. It has to do with his character - a MAGA type, in addition to the film not being liked by many people, even though it has its fans. He was the face of the movie and people didn’t want to recognize him for it. Perri, don’t be too surprised that every Academy voter would be sitting there watching intently every movie and not stopping half an hour in if they don’t care for it. As an animation buff, I don't really look to the Academy Awards for the animation category since the Academy doesn't always take it seriously. That being said, I've always wanted Tom Moore to win for Best Animated Feature, but his films always run against Disney blockbusters. Given the limited releases his films get in the U.S., they don't usually stand a chance against the Disney monoliths that they're up again. I can't be mad at Soul winning, since it's a great film in its own right, but I'm eternally bothered that only 5 of the 19 Best Animated winners so far were non-Disney/Pixar. Some were deserving, others were definitely not. I am happy to see Soul win because clearly a lot of hard work was put into it and it was a beautiful film, but I loved Wolfwalkers more, and I've been rooting for Tom Moore (and other less mainstream filmmakers like him) for so long that it would just be nice to see him win for once!

Sneider is totally right about why Delroy Lindo wasn’t nominated. Can you imagine the backlash the Academy would have received if just one person discovered his character is a Trump supporter in the film. There would be articles calling the Academy racist. A similar situation happened with Sam Rockwell when he won for Three Billboards. When Twitter found out his character is racist they were pissed and said the Academy promotes and endorses racism since he’s an actor doing his job. I wouldn’t be surprised if members of the academy refused to watch the film because of the maga hat. Eliza Hittman shared a picture that an academy member sent her an email that he wasn’t going to watch her film Never Rarely Sometimes Always because it’s in support of abortion.

I think he had a point worth talking about. I get the performance was great and absolutely worthy of a nomination, but of course there are other factors normally coming into play with Oscars, and I can see unfair bias Trumping Lindo's chance for a nomination.

I'm very surprised: 1. no Miami for best picture 2. Lakeith switching category to supporting and so taking up the 5th spot 3. no Fincher for screenplay 4. Vintenberg for best director!!! wouldn't swap out the 5 nominees for anybody! 5. no Tenet for score, cinematography

Love the more subtle Glenn Close work (e.g. "Garp" and "Dangerous Liaisons") but damn, I'm hoping Perri's "anyone else" take holds true- hate the "look at me!" overdone acting style that often proves fruitful at the Oscars.

Y’all the academy is more diverse in all branches, but the directors’ branch is its own thing. The diversity there is much more international, not necessarily a whole lot more females. Of course, Fincher would be in for example over Sorkin.

21:00 Scott is such a drama queen. This is not Glenn's 10th nomination. This is her 8th and if she loses, she ties with Peter O'Toole for an award. And yes, Academy let Peter O'Toole die with 8 noms and no wins.

Your forgetting the same Academy gave Geraldine Page her second Oscar upsetting a performance widely regarded as better by Whoopi Goldberg in the Color Purple. Don't write off Glenn so easily. Especially when there's no frontrunner at this point.

Remember, just last year Greta Gerwig did not get nominated for Director for Little Women but was nominated for Adapted Screenplay, and a lot of people thought she was a shoe-in for Screenplay because of that, but she lost to Taika for Jojo Rabbit. So, just because a writer/director got snubbed in one category does not automatically equal a win in the other. Also, I can't see any way in hell Glenn Close wins for the same performance that got nominated for a Razzie. Whether you think it deserved the Razzie nod or not, they're just not going to vote for it. It would be too embarrassing.

I think Close will win in supporting actress. If she had an Oscar already she would not have been nominated but there really is no one in this category that is a favorite. When Judy Dench won for Shakespeare in Love for a 7 min appearance obviously it was a consolation win for her not winning for a much better performance in Mrs Brown which she lost to a sitcom actress. The biggest rob was her losing to Cher and not winning for Fatal Attraction.

People should stop making it about glenn close winning because of her body work, if she's going to win this one it is because she is the best among other nominess..... But let us be honest she won't win this year and she never will. If Oscar has a plan to give her awards, then she should have got it for fatal attraction, dangerous liaison or the wife.

Honestly I don't even know if the academy loves Mank that much. Like they liked it enough to nominate it for picture, director, actor, supporting actress, sure, but the lack of a screenplay nom and an editing nom makes me think it's a movie they appreciate more than they love. And yeah, it was the most nominated movie, but it's also the big period piece of the year, so of course it's going to get in for costumes, production design, and makeup and hair, and it's a very stylized movie, so of course it's going to get in for cinematography and sound. It didn't even get editing! So yeah, I honestly think most of the nominations it got were kind of obligatory, and not indicative of a serious love for the movie. Despite being the most nominated movie, it feels like it underperformed.
@MrChaseBlue
@MrChaseBlue 3 года назад
It will be this year’s Irishman, but with one win for Cinematography probably. I liked the film, but it deserved to be snubbed for screenplay and editing. I feel bad for Fincher though because the writing nomination for his father would probably be the one he wanted the most. Unfortunately, the worst part of the film was the screenplay.

@@MrChaseBlue I haven't actually seen it yet (as a huge Citizen Kane fan, I really gotta get around to it) but that's the vibe I'm getting. I'm not even sure it can beat Nomadland for cinematography. Production design is the one award I'm pretty confident it'll win, and then maybe supporting actress and/or cinematography.
