I do a full outdoor gear review of my new Osprey Aether 70 AG backpack. I talk about all the features and explain AG/ Anti Gravity back support, the customizable harness and hip belt. The top lid also converts to a daypack that is a great pack for peak bagging, day trips and even travel! Ultra light and ultra cool. I do a full demo on the Sierra Nevada mountains of Northern California.

I have had this pack for two years and love it! I could probably get by with a 50L but having the extra room to open up the pack and get to things and not craming everything in is great. Do you by chance know of a raincover that will fit this pack with the accordion style sleeping pad lashed to the pack like you have in the review?
@basecampchris
@basecampchris 4 года назад
That's great, it's a good pack. I like the extra room too, my go pack is a Atmos 65...plenty of room. For a rain cover Osprey has a large ultra light rain cover but it get's mixed reviews...apparently it rips easily. You may want to get a standard cover that fits the pack and then go with a heavy duty medium sized lawn bag for the sleep pad..wrap it then attach with the compression straps. ( take a scissors and cut the top 1/3 of the lawn bag to fit better...) Thanks for watching.

Great review! At least on the version that I got, the day pack is also hydration compatible and has a little bladder pocket and ports for running a tube. I was a bit confused by some of the straps and such on the ruck, though. Some of the extra buckles and such weren't symmetrical and didn't really seem to make sense until I read the user manual. Seems they're for the "straightjacket" system. Wish that was more intuitive.

Hey Chris, got a recommendation for rain protection on this pack when carrying a pad accordion style like that?
@basecampchris
@basecampchris 4 года назад
You bring up a good point ...being that this is Closed Cell Foam for the most part it can be wiped down once at camp ( won't absorb water ) ...but I'd rather it didn't get wet in the first place...best thing is a light weight but durable clear plastic bag that fits ...( I bet the UPS store would have a bag that would fit pretty close )

Hi Jayson, just took a look at the Gregory it’s comparable in price and looks like a really decent pack. I would compare features to find what you want. If possible get to a local retailer ( like REI ) and look and try on both packs and see what works for you. To me the harness / shoulder strap system can make the big difference! Hope that helps...🦅

I have the same Backpack. Got mine at REI. Used it for a 30 mile trek on AT. Only thing I wish was the hip belt could be changed. IT was a little tough to get to secure it around waste because it stays close to pack when putting it on with 30 lbs. . You have to reach around and pull the hipbelt out from behind. I heard their Xenith pack hip belt is alittle more flexible. belt definatley hugs you well once you get pack on.. Just wish the Xenith belt was intechangable to theis pack, bcause of the flex.

Hello there, great review. I'm from the UK so I am aware of the spec differences ie. the daypack/rain cover for US/ euro markets, but wasn't aware of the different capacities (you talk about medium/large etc having different litre capacities). In the UK the sizing,small, medium, large apply to the frame of the rucksack (Taken from a measurement of your spine) and not the actual capacity of the bag. Cheers Gaz.
@basecampchris
@basecampchris 4 года назад
Thanks Gaz! Yes...the sizes actually refer to capacity of the pack.
@kylebrown3643

But also the size of the frame varies and it should be based on the fit / spine length

I’m in the market for a new pack. Currently on Amazon the 70 is like 6 bucks cheaper then the atmos 65 which I planned on getting. Although I normally go on one day overnight hikes do you think the 70 is a little excessive for that purpose?
@basecampchris
@basecampchris 3 года назад
The Aether 70 is designed for extended backpacking trips...it could still be used for an over-nighter. It just may be a little more room than you need. I do 1 nights plus in my Atmos 65...works for me. But between the 65 or the 70 they are so close that either would work.

Summary, Atmos AG 65 with snowshoe straps. Wish REI sold me this pack instead of the Atmos. Those snowshoe straps would be convenient for spring hiking the White Mountains in New England. Posting up to my waist for an entire day was exhausting. Having snowshoes easily stored and available very convenient for rapidly changing conditions. If you do not like the weather then wait a moment as it will change.

I mean, it's a different design choice, for sure. Some packs do a "U", some packs do a straight line down the middle. The "J" is a bit of a compromise between the two. I don't hate it. It gets the job done well enough.

I have the 85 liter version and it's effing huge. I love it. Call me crazy, but I like knowing that if I need to bring extra gear or supplies, I can. I wanted a single, future-proof, ruck that could do almost anything I needed it to do. From day hiking, to week long trips, to expedition/thru-hiking, and it definitely checks all of the boxes I just keep all of the compression straps tight and kinda forget about the extra space, for the most part. But it's nice to know that if I need it, it's there.

Osprey brand will, I think, suffer for their cheap skate attitude to the lack of day pack on European models. They claim that market research indicates it's not considered important to buyers! Oh yeah, so why does almost every reviewer rave about the day pack? Smells fishy to me.

Weird that they don't include the day pack for the European model. Then again, I have the American version and I'm a bit miffed that it doesn't have a rain cover. So I guess the grass is always greener, eh? For $250-300,it'd be nice if they included both.
