I am 40 and have early Arthritis or just a mild one, instead of taking NSAIDS, I apply a lot of mustard or Olive oil massage at night and change of diet helps. No more swellings and stiffness in the morning.
I haven’t been able to eat wheat in 20 years when my body decided that breaking out in hives head to toes was how it would show me what not to eat. I’ve been gluten free since.
I went on a keto diet for my osteoarthritis knee. My weight loss caused my knee to hurt and crunch more. When I gained back weight and ate some sugar and carbs it actually felt better with less pain. Eating some squares of dark chocolate at night helped immensely. It seems counterintuitive but for me it is easier to walk. Now if I gain a lot of weight, I'm sure it would hurt worse. When I lost 50 lbs on Keto, I felt lighter but my knee hurt and crunched lower and my bones hurt like a sinking giving out feeling. Why, I don't know?
I had a knee injury, and 2 surgeries. For years I had arthritis, along with my chronic pain in my right leg, which only opiates would take the edge off.. NSAIDs didn't touch it. I have much of the meniscus removed, and a few spots of grade 4 condromalacia. I changed my diet, doing lower carb, but more importantly, I reduced my vegetable/seed oil, and primarily Linoleic Acid intake. My chronic leg pain and inflammation 100% gone. This also eliminated my sinus issues and nearly eliminated my allergies. I also no longer need my asthma medicine, no drugs at all. All PUFA oxidize easily, and are harmful when oxidized, but linoleic acid is special, and damages our bodies on multiple fronts: 1. Oxidized Linoleic Acid and Oxidized Linoleic Acid Metabolites(OXLAM'S in the literature), are toxic, and highly inflammatory. 2. Linoleic acid, and other PUFA are transported via LDL. If oxidized, LDL becomes a vector to transferring highly inflammatory toxins to your cells. Thus atherosclerosis emerges. 3. Linoleic acid Metabolites are pro inflammatory. Being an omega-6, imbalance of omega-6 to omega-3 promotes the body to an inflammatory state. We have many drugs that act on these pathways, cox-1, Cox-2, Leukotriene etc. Ibuprofen(Advil), Naproxen, sodium(Aleve) monoleukast sodium (asthma medicine, Singulair). All work on this pathway. Reduce the omega-6, the need for these drugs goes away, absent acute injury. Also pro-inflammatory states have other side effects. 4. Linoleic acid(LA) is toxic to the mitochondria. LA becomes part of the mitochondrial membrane, as part of the cardiolipin molecule. If LA oxidzes, the cardiolipin molecule changes shape, causing a structural change in the membrane, making it leaky and less functional. Over time this will completely break the mitochondria. On top of this, it can auto-oxidize in a chain reaction due to proximity to the iron containing molecule cytochrome-c. This destroys your cells metabolic machinery, and is the primary cause of metabolic dysfunction. Diabetes is a metabolic disease, Alzheimer's is at least I part a metabolic diseaae. Many forms of heart failure are metabolic in part or whole. Couple this with the emergent theories that cancer is metabolic disease. There's much more, but it's pretty clear what the elephant in the room is for our chronic disease of modern society. Issues with keto, is does low carb, but isn't the whole picture.. but that's a longer discussion.
Organic Castor oil folks. My knuckle was that inflamed and swollen on my hand and painfull. Don't just rub it on the arthritis. I got a soft bandage and soaked it in castor oil - Wrapped it round my finger sealed in tape for 2 nights running.. Amazing! I haven't used it since. I can bend my knuckle again and no pain. Do this for knees etc.. Castor oil is great
I developed significant joint degeneration in my CMC joints in both hands by the age of 50. Major loss of hand grip strength. My employment seems to be an major factor. Many years of working front desk in a medical office answering telephones all day long....reach and grab motion.
Is the treatment for OA different if it caused by Wilson’s disease? I have known I have it since 26, I am 41 and over the past two years significant pain/arthritis in hands wrists and elbows. It’s getting worse rapidly. Any suggestions? Thx
You did not mention the big part that hormones TSH and DHEA , estrogen- progesterone- testosterone -melontonin and cortisol could be unbalanced an imbalance in any of these hormones above or below the optimal level is catabolic and could be the cause of the breaking down of the cartridge between the bones. Recent studies have found this connection. Getting my hormone levels checked is going to be one of my 1st steps to conquering this disease that is called arthritis
Hyaluronic acid injections into my knee has been tremendously helpful to me! My PCP says a number of his patients are finding great relief with this treatment.
Great info, thanks for this summary and pointing toward additional, related topics. The compare/contrast of different joint pain conditions was especially critical for education. 👍
