Oster Classic 76 hair clipper - take apart to clean or fix

This Oster hair clipper is very popular for stylists and barbers. This Classic 76 clipper is known as a very reliable and professional clipper for many years.
Note: This is not a professional classic 76 repair person. It is an amateur video demonstrating how to take apart a Classic 76 clipper.
A friend had several non-working classic 76 clippers. My plan was to see if I could get at least one of them working by swapping the parts from the bad clippers. In this case, most of the clippers needed only a new carbon brush/springs, and a good cleaning/regreasing. I had a long relationship with an beauty store ( www.texasbeautysupplies.com ), so bought the parts that I needed from them. They have been always so helpful.
In this case, I needed:
For parts: Oster PART Classic 76 CARBON BRUSH and BRUSH SPRING #62106, AND, Oster Gear Lube - 1.25oz #76300-105
For tools: Phillips screwdriver, Flat screwdriver, and retainer ring pliers. (flashlight, qtips, and paper towels are usefull too)
This an amateur video demonstrating the steps to disassemble an Oster 76, in order to help others that may also be needing to do the same thing. It is recommended to take it to a professional oster service center, but, I understand that there are cases that option is not available.
My opinion...
Between each customer: use Oster Spray Disinfectant Citrus Fragrance #40878 to clean the blade.
At least once a week: spray your clipper with Oster Kool Lube 3 Clipper Blade Coolant Lubricant Cleaner. Oster also has other aerosal sprays to disinfectant and clean the blades.
About every 6 months, clean out the old hair and lube under the cover, and apply new Oster Gear Lube - 1.25oz #76300-105.
With proper maintenance, your clipper will not overheat and continue to for many years.

After days of searching for instructions on disassembling my clippers I finally found it here. I have Oster 2 speed Turbos that I need to replace the housing due to the fact that the lever post is loose & the only way to fix it is to change out the housing. I was a little afraid to take it apart but after seeing this video I can see that it's quite simple.Thanks for the video.

wanted to thank you for posting this video..was able to disassenble my Oster Classic 76 clippers and make the repair myself using your video..the small nut that holds the switch in place broke,this caused the switch to move around freely in the end cap..after disassembling ,also found a wire that was broken off the switch...thanks again for posting vid.,was a huge help..

Awesome video, thank you for getting in depth with the c76. If there is something wrong with the motor, would you then send it out for service, or would oster ship a new one? Thanks again!

My old 76 is running crazy slow. Getting a weird electrical burning smell. I’ve taken it apart, cleaned everything replaced brushes. Still the same. Is the armature or the field assembly more likely the issue? Or replace both?

Help! I removed my end caps and one of the pieces of charcoal (I think it's charcoal) broke off and is now lodged inside. How can I get this out? I have not removed the electric end and removed anything as I did not have the right kind of screw driver. Would this help me get to it? I'm not sure if I can chip at the charcoal. Will this cause damage to what's underneath? Thanks so much for your help.

Hi there. I recently pickt up a vintage oster hair clipper like the 10 model. But the actual older version the model that I have it seems it's from the 50s or 60s and it over heats not sure if it came with a built in fan and the tongue lever is gone. Any help on where to purchase a tongue lever that is that old. Or how to fix the over heat issue that would be grate. Any help Most appreciated

hey i have a question, my oster 76 blade size 1 got apart is there a way i could put it back together to ensure it trims the same way as before?
@Danchlife
@Danchlife 11 лет назад
Question: I have an Oster 76 and the assembly that holds the blade pulls completely out it has two screws that hold it in place at the top of the clipper. The scews pull out with the brass things that hold them in place. Do I need a new housing? b/c I think the brass things came as part of the housing I can't find a part number and they're not on the diagram just the screws.

What's that little button just below the '76' for and how do you know exactly when it needs to be greased. I opened mine today to clean out the hairs and noticed there's a fair amount if grease still in there.

Dear Sir. Good to find your good effort movie. How are you? Please may I take a moment of your time to say thank you. Because I gave my hearing under the plate a clean and re grease I noticed a small washer came out with the gears. If I look close I can see the small washer was left inside your gearing port flush the the body of the clipper. Am I right? I'm greatful. I look forward to your reply if you could. Thanks. From Craig Lee.

First PUT a hose clamp on outside of housing and very seldom will you break one when snap ring snaps back. Snap ring is strong enough to hold a rear axle in a 1 ton truck. Heat the Housing slightly with a hair dryer and field and brush carrier will fall right out with easy. skip

Huge chunk of burgundy case Broke Off when using the retainer pliers because the ring is STEEL and slipped from being squeezed to back open!!! Motor did not slide out but all wires shredded and motor was in pieces when I used pliers to pull it out. I totally ruined clippers out $175 :(( Attempt this at your own risk...so sad I did...

Yes, you are not a pro. You can't be taking stuff apart and then not showing how to get it back together. There's nothing wrong with the armature, just take the black off with a buffer or electronics cleaner. A dremel with a buff also works. The 76 and A5 and the 97 (50 cycle 220V in UK) are the first clippers anyone learns on. Please don't do any more "repair" videos where you leave parts strewn all over the desktop.
