► Introduction ◄
In today's video I explore some 'problems' or 'disadvantages' that no one really talks about. It revolves around issues with preferences, comfortability and the learning curve of tablet which are problems that aren't so apparent with mouse - at least from my experience. Tablet vs Mouse, one removes mouse drift but creates a million more problems... or one just has mouse drift and not so many problems? It's all up to you, osu is preferential after all.

I got so frustrated one day that I decided to swap my left/right hand (left for pen and right for keyboard) And I found out that it is pretty nostalgic. (recalling the past-self, struggling with 2 stars)

I would have loved to see this video when I started to play with a tablet. I'm personnally in a pretty special case (I think), because I began playing osu! with a mouse, but I am left handed, and I have always used the mouse with my right hand. I've never had a problem with it, because I've always been used to it. However, on osu!, aim is really important (it's the point of the game) and I actually realised that with my right hand, it was really complicated for me to aim precisely. I tried to switch with my left hand, but it was worse, as I had never used a mouse with my left hand. So I decided that if I wanted to improve on osu!, I needed to get a tablet. Once I got my tablet, I've got my level back pretty fast (in 3/4 days) and I felt satisfied playing like this. But as I was improving, I felt that my grip was bothering me, so I tried to change the area, the sensitivity, the way I held my pen. Sometimes it was quick, sometimes not, and I've never kept the same grip for long. It took me quite a while to understand that I would probably never find the perfect grip, and it was frustrating, because I had the impression that nobody had the same problem as me. I've been playing osu! since 2017, and with this whole new video that got recommended to me by chance, I finally realised that my problem was actually normal, so thank you, it definitely changed my point of view about it, and will surely help me to not be discouraged from playing osu! in the future, unlike what I did a few times before.

Almost the same situation as me. Been playing since 2018. Started with mouse in my right hand (I'm left handed) and eventually switched to tablet with my left hand. I couldn't find a grip and I struggled with tapping a lot. Got to rank 50k and got fed up of not being able to play stream maps at all. I decided to start using tablet with my right hand instead of left. My tapping was much better, but my aim was awful. Unsurprisingly though, my aim has improved a lot over time, and now I've surpassed my old rank by nearly 20k ranks. I can stream 240bpm on good days. Switching hands was the best decision I've made in regards to osu

@@acelys-x I got a tablet about a year back and tried playing right hand. I struggled to hold the pen and couldn’t aim 2 star maps for the week I had the tablet. I’m playing mouse now and my tapping is far ahead of my aim making my account acc nuts. I am rank 54 k with 99.46 acc, 85 k play count and top plays far below what I should have for my rank. It’s taken me 2 years to get my aim to 5-6 star jump range. I will try tablet again one day but for now I am chilling with shaky aim and good tapping 👍

that reminds me, for those of you who are left handed (writing hand) and want to switch to tablet (but have played right handed mouse on osu for any period of time), you may be asking 'well how do I deal with this problem? The problem being: 'if I play left handed tablet then I will have to re-learn how to tap on my right, but if I play right handed tablet and keep my muscle memory for tapping on my left hand, then I have to learn how to aim with my right hand'. my advice is as follows: - you're going to have to learn/re-learn something either way. do whatever you feel is more comfortable doing. - i've got a friend who had this exact problem and he had about 400 hours with right hand mouse as a left handed writing person. he decided to re-learn tapping on his right hand in favour of having good control of tablet aim on his left hand (since he is a left handed writing person). it took him a few weeks/months to get into it but i would personally do the same if i was in that position - apparently spare (top 50 player) is a left handed(?) writer but he learned to aim with his right hand (idk how fast he learned to do it but it doesn't matter, he has thousands of hours). - so again, you might have to spend a lot of time re-learning/learning either way depending on how long you've played. or just don't switch to tablet - it's as simple as that.

Ya this is my case and at first I am struggling with my right hand cuz Im lefty so I told to myself "f*ck it, I need to tap in right hand if I want to be comfortable in my aiming". So basically I go back to zero and then for like 5 weeks I can now caught up my tapping just like in my left hand (and I can alternate properly)

Im a left handed writer, but for some reason found it extremely uncomfortable to aim tablet with my left hand. I ended up using tablet with my right hand and caught up to my mouse aim in less than 2 weeks. It really doesn’t seem to make a difference what hand you use as long as it feels comfortable.

Just noting some common issues as a longtime mouse player: - Mouse Drift (demonstrated in the video, better than I can put into words) - Mouse Grip (while not nearly as varied as tablet, there are many different ways to hold and use a mouse. Its common for osu players to have a grip completely different from other games) - Grip slip (over time, mouse grip/grip tape will lose adhesion, and move on the mouse because the way you hold it constantly adds pressure against them. Sometimes they "slip" at the worst time) - Surface Slide (The reason we use grip tape; plastic can be slippery, especially if oily or sweaty, and you can't really have that in a game like osu) - Mousepad Preference changes (Like tablet, your preference changes constantly. I went from a soft mat, to a hard pad, to a hardpad on top of a softpad, and now, I don't even use a mousepad) - Un-clean pad or mouse (Sensors these days are really accurate, so keeping the mousepad/surface and the bottom of the mouse clean is a must!) - Space (It's actually pretty hard to get enough space to feel comfortable. I have an 80" desk, and still occasionally hit my hand on things) - Mouse Skate degradation (mouse skates [feet] don't last forever, especially if you play a game like Osu. Occasionally, you will have to change them, and its not fun) - Sensor Cleaning (sensors are sensitive, keep it clear) - Desk/Keyboard space (unlike needing physical space to move it, you also need a pretty clear desk for a mouse to move it, unlike a tablet, which stays in the same spot) - Standardization (Mouse sizes, shapes, weight and general specs suffer from terrible standardization. It can be extremely hard to find one you like) - Wrist movement (Square jumps on mouse are just not a fun time; not impossible, but certainly not as easy as on a tablet; your wrist just doesn't really work that way) - "Particles" (Easily the worst of them all. The sensors and bodies of modern gaming mice are extremely sensitive. It only takes a tiny crumb, or even just dust to throw ones aim off entirely. The amount of times I need to flip my mouse over and blow, or even wipe it down, is ridiculous; and I'm a neat freak who wipes down my desk and peripherals constantly; I literally have cleaner at the end of the desk. Yeah, you should clean your tablet, but normal wear and tear will not affect it nearly as much as it affects a mouse) These are just a few examples of how high maintenance a mouse can be, especially in comparison to the downsides of a tablet. This is written from a more "competitive" standpoint, so a decent amount of it won't apply to the average user, but its still something to think about.

Dude my main problem with mouse is that godamn grip slip, whenever im playing i legitimately have to think more about how to get my mouse back to its optimal position mid play rather than the play itself, its extremely frustrating because this makes me a lot less consistent and has fucked over countless plays of mine
@itsjustmajor6191
@itsjustmajor6191 2 года назад
@@UmCaraNormalnumPlanetanormal Yeah, Its easily the biggest downside. I've had a lot of luck with practicing against it, by either trying to ignore it (training micro adjustments and to not get overwhelmed or uncomfortable by the feeling mid play) or by just trying to keep my arm straighter and make less wrist movements in general. It works well, but its definitely something I need to think about and keep aware of, as it will never be comfortable. There was actually one player who played with his mouse sideways to combat it, should be on youtube if you're interested. Definitely get some sort of grip tape on your mouse though, it does help at least a little.
@morejaeru
@morejaeru 2 года назад
As a mouse player, I still often have to adjust my grip. I have for my entire life found basically every mouse and mouse grip uncomfortable asf (not only in games, but casual use). i tend to switch my grip every week - not in purpose, but my brain makes me switch just to stay little bit comfier. Also while there is no area issues, just finding that one comfortable place on your mousepad to keep your mouse at for optimal aiming is very hard to find. And it differs on how dirty/sweaty your mousepad is. And I know tablet players also have this problem, but especially during summer, osu! is just unplayable due to amount of sweat hand generates. I often had to pause midmap to adjust my grip, not because of mouse drift, but sweaty mouse (and keyboard). So yeah, it doesn't matter which device you use, it is likely to have grip issues eventually.

I started out as an mouse player but switched to tablet shortly after getting my first 5* fc. At first tablet seemed SO COMFORTABLE, I found my grip within few hours and on my first day I nearly replicated my mouse scores. After that I improved rapidly, BUT... After some time playing my hand started to hurt. Didn't matter how long of a break I took, didn't matter how little I played, my wrist started hurting as soon as I started playing. So I tried out different grips and found one that didn't entice my hand hurting, although I was noticibly worse with that grip. I slowly regained my aim, but by the time I crawled back to my previous level my hand started hurting again. And this time there was no grip that made it go away, I tried literally everything. Eventually I realised that if I wanted to keep my hand, I had to stop playing osu with a tablet. But I didn't want to quit osu alltogether, so I tried mouse again. To my suprise, my skill with a mouse was leagues better than it was when I stopped using it, and while it was worse than my skill with tablet it wasn't THAT much worse. And most importantly, my hand stopped hurting. Right now (1 year after I went back to mouse) my aim is still worse than it was with tablet, but I never enjoyed playing osu more. What's more, my aim might be worse, but my flow aim, ability to play fast sliders, alt maps, tech streams and weird, wide-angle aim are much better than they were with tablet. Mouse drift is annoying, but compared to how many problems with holding a grip there were while I was playing with a tablet, it is a minor inconvenience. So what's the moral of this story? Idk, mouse good tablet bad, just wanted to share ma experience with tablet...

My mouse is specifically right handed, see. It has a little ridge to the left where you would rest your thumb. But the thing is, I don't palm my mouse. I use my finger tips. I thank you for this video, (before I say anything, when I was younger I was made fun of by the teacher in front of my class for my hand writing and since then I've always hated writing, and the longer I write the more of an almost hopeless panic that I feel, so the point is that it started off incredibly hard to even hold the pen). School started for me yesterday and soon I plan on going to public school giving me less time to play osu, since skill decay is a thing it makes it much harder to improve but I'm very stubborn so especially given the fact that it'll be harder for me to keep my rank, I'm more motivated to find ways to keep playing and to keep improving, seeing this video brings me even more motivation because now I understand that playing with tablet is just a struggle that you have to bare with, I should've known better than to think that I was the only one struggling to maintain a comfortable grip. Really this video helped me understand that this is just part of the process and that its not over for me yet. I have a keypad coming in as well as heavier switches to practice with (which shipped very late), but once I'm able to start using it, I'm very confident in that it will be one of the things that helps me improve lots and I'm very excited. I'm just rambling now but really thank you for the video and giving me more peace of mind.

One of the hot takes I've had for a while is that you have to accept that grip changing, tablet repositioning, desk changes, etc are a part of playing the game - thus, responding and adapting to those changes is a skill you have to practice and master.

My grip is, resting my pen on the middle finger and between the thumb and index, move it with middle, thumb, and index. Ring and pinkie stay behind the middle finger for streams as it feels hevier and more flowy, for jumps i raise my ring finger above the middle finger, or on top of the pinkie because it feels lighter and faster, and its a quick move i can do in the middle of anything

Actually when i was still newer to the game like 120 hours max, i actually drew an outline of my hand placement (i have a VERY small area at the time) so that way my hand would always be in the correct spot, i stopped doing this and did eventually change my tablet area to something bigger, as a plus i moved it to the corner instead of the middle so that way it would be easier to find hand placement even if it wouldnt matter much since i started aiming more with my wrist not fingers. I also had pen slipping problems (for a while) which i came to fix by putting a hair tie on it, i think ive finally escaped the horrors of tablet and can finally rest the struggle.

I managed to find a grip and area that really make me comfortable, but one problem I have with the tablet that prevents me from aiming is the wear and tear of the tablet that makes my pen slide a lot on the tablet...and I don't know what to do about it, I've tried several solutions like putting a piece of plastic or thick paper over the tablet and still nothing worked...

Really cool video! When I started playing the game I were able to play like 6 hours a day without a break and I could've easily played longer. Now a days (about 4y later) I can't even play 1 hour before my hand starts to threating me cause I cramp like every muscle in there. I tried many things now like hovering, many different grips and so on. But I still try every day cause in the end I still love the game and someday I know my grip will get better. And I already know it's gonna come soooo random like everything else when it comes to improving in this game. xD

All my problems with tablet disappeared once I switched to SFA 216 mm from my old 50-90 mm (I was changing it every couple of days because I couldn't find the right one), I literally set a new top play within an hour on an alt flow aim map first try, the only non-farm one at the time. It was 240ish pp, so it wasn't just because of a low amount of skill to gain back. Now I can comfortably play 7* cross screen/8* high bpm jumps on top of expected insane boosts to flow aim, aim control and aim precision (I can literally often get better acc and misscount on a map after changing cs from 4 to 6 just because it makes reading easier). I also can play for longer periods of time now, before switching to SFA I couldn't play for more than 3, rarely 4 hours, now I can play almost indefinitely, like I do multiple 8+ hour sessions per month where I'd stop only after getting too sleepy while playing maps on the outer half of my improvement zone. So my main answer to all complains now is "try full area for a week or two". The only downsides are inability to play high 9*+ jumps (but only on xooty's/rupertion's area, zoomer's one is probably good to go), you'll need a lot of free space on your desk, especially if you can't put your tablet below your keyboard, and it's also more demanding to chair/desk height ratio. Biggest upside is healthier joints due to less precision strain on them, especially compared to sub-whitecat-sized areas (Kariyu really felt this one). Same also goes to full alt vs singletap, full alt is better for your health due to no wrist strain while being less rhythmically precise. Disadvantages of both are negligible outside of top-100 level dt jumps.

so I guess I'm super lucky to never have "forgotten" my grip or having felt like I had an uncomfortable one. I don't think I've had the same grip for all my 9 years, but besides trying out top players grips thinking that maybe my grip was holding me back early on(like in 2013), I didn't really change it much consciously. it probably evolved quite organically over the years, I even noticed I changed the way I move it significantly in the last 2 years or so. used to move my arm way more, but now I move my fingers a lot as well which takes less energy I think. full area first on a cth-470 and now on a ctl-4100 if whoever reading this wonders

I switched to tablet about 2 monthes ago , at first it was weird to play with. Few weeks later after having done some mods to the pen like tennis grip , i stuck with a problem of slippery tablet surface , i use tape and paper for better aim , but i have to change the paper every few days , and my question is do you recommend buying a tablet cover ? I have never used a tablet cover for obvious reasons , idk if the surface of a tablet cover could have the same texture or similiar to paper and im afraid to invest in a tablet cover without knowing how it feels like. Anyways good video as always , have a good day

2 years ago i used to have a pretty small area (63.3mm wide aspect ratio on) with a pen grip where my pen rests on the last joint of my middle finger whilst my index and thumb support the pen by holding it in a kinda pinch grip But the thing is i lost internet for a bit over a year and i decided firetruck it, i wanna make my aim more accurate and stuff because seeing my old plays my aim was always so off and shaky so after a bit of trial and error in finding my new area i got a 113mm wide aspect ratio on area. but the thing is, because my area is now almost 2x bigger, i had to put my fingers higher up on the pen (if you know the pen of the ctl-472 or the ctl-490 there is this thick part near the tip of the pen and i used to hold it there to prevent pen slip but because i had to hold my pen higher i started experiencing pen slip like my fingers sliding down the pen mid play). but then there was this simple yet so stupid remedy. On this normal ball point pen there is this removable tube like rubber pen grip and i decided to brute force that to my tablet pen. I did it until it reached the bottom of the buttons of the pen and now with my new grip (basically my normal pen writing and drawing grip) i can just rest my ring finger where the top of the rubber tube is and there i got my pen grip lol Its not the perfect way of doing it but atleast my pen grip is always consistent and its very comfortable for me. I doubt this will be my last adjustment on my pen tablet things but so far so good havent had to adjust anything yet ww Also i use ctl 490 drag, always been a drag player 🥵🥵😳😳😳😳

I am a mouse player, and I think I use it very strangly. I am basically gripping the mouse using only my fingers to not change the rotation of the mouse, to make the mouse pad of mine (which is small) like a limited area where I move my mouse. one struggle I found by doing that grip for years, is the struggle to find the right distance for a jump. occasionally, I would just miss absolutely easy jumps and get mad because I am bad, but besides that, it really is a grip that I like. when I think about it, I also use that grip for other things too.

Throughout my 8 years of playing with mouse I've been changing not only my grip but also playstyle, I started with mouse only, not using keyboard at all then changed to mouse1 singletap and zx keyboard for streaming only. Nowadays i change my grip like almost everyday and it depends on playstyle that i use, I mixed my old playstyle with full alternate on keyboard for maps that are too exhausting to singletap with mouse only. Never had a problem with mouse drift but sometimes if i don't hold my mouse strong enough it rotates and fucks up my aim, but if i hold it long enough my hand gets tired

I would recommend giving full area a try, and I don't mean try it for one map then swap back if you do badly, try it for a session, you don't want to play full area for more than a session of osu if it's not comfortable as it will fuck up your muscle memory with your normal area, even a session might fuck up your muscle memory depending on how long your sessions are so you can limit it to like a 1-2 hours if you want. I used to play with a 27mm(2.7cm) x 19mm(1.9cm) which is considered as a really small area. I played it for like 7 months and it got to the point where I was finally fed up with the area as it was shaky, i was inconsistent and my grip was kinda getting in the way. So back in April, I tried full area. It was hard at first, going from dragging on a small area to hovering across my entire tablet was hard, but in the first session I got more and more comfortable, in just 3 days I was back to my usual star rating of 5.5-6 stars. My aim became much smoother and consistent as I felt like it was easier to build muscle memory. Also I was primarily aiming with my arm meaning that my grip wasn't an issue because I aimed with my arm instead of wrist. Now, In May, a month after I switched to full area, I've fced my first 6 star, fc'd a 5 minute long stream map and reached top 150k (I can easily reach 5 digit if I grind but right now not focused on pp). Me swapping to full area made me much more consistent at osu to the point where my top plays are more consistent maps instead of farm maps. It's probably the best decision I've made as I've been able to set scores that I wouldn't have been able to do in just a month of playing full area. There are obvious cons with full area like finding it harder to play dt or fast jumps, but with enough experience you can play dt on full area, take xooty as an example. The more you play full area, the better you become (wow no shit), I went from being unable to play crosscreen jumps to being able to hit crosscreen jumps (in ~210bpm context) although dt is hard for me, I can't play dt, never been able to. Thanks for reading this long comment, hopefully it helps you with your struggles. Once again I should state that this is from my experience, majority of people find full area uncomfortable and if thats you then that's fine, it's just a recommendation if you are struggling. You don't have to make the switch to full area if you don't want to.

There are so many fucking factors to pen grips it's insane, intricate ones like whitecat's in particular, took me about a year to be able to confidently say I'm comfortable with it, even today I'm still finding out elements that make it better. I'll just note down some of the ones I really wish I knew when I got into it: time of the day/your brain state: this is by far the biggest one in my case, probably mostly happens to older people or people with brain issues. I, for once, can't grip my pen nearly as comfortably without my brain working at full capacity, this sucks for me because my brain only works at full capacity after I've been awake for like 8-12 hours, some days it just straight up doesn't work. I think what you mentioned in the video of you "forgetting your grip" wasn't you forgetting it, but your brain being low on juice and you not realizing it instead, which fucks with you and makes your grip feel bad. This can go on for days because it can damage your self esteem, and low self esteem can lead to days of bad mentality. for people with slim pens like the 472: I should've realized a lot sooner that it was the pen being really slim what caused me not to be able to maintain my grip, the 480 comes with a fat pen, so that shouldn't be a problem for most people with it, but for the 472 or similar consider putting some rubber or something to make it more grippable. tablet positioning: also plays a massive role, and I only really thought about it a couple of weeks ago, before swapping to a smaller area that I'm using now, my area was like 30% bigger, in order to compensate and be able to reach corners I had to move it farther to the left, leaving my arm in a weird angle, it was really comfortable but my aim was never great nor consistent, after switching to a smaller area I moved my tablet to the right by like 6cm, leaving my arm more parallel to the tablet, and holy shit it made my aim so much snappier and consistent, of course not as comfortable at first but definitely worth trying. All in all I wouldn't say all the time I spent optimizing my grip was a waste, I was learning to full alt, finger control, speed, and just reading in general. So even if you feel like your time is being completely wasted while you're struggling with your grip, don't be, because osu is a language, so even if you're playing suboptimally because of your grip don't let it get to you, you're still learning. At least that's what I told myself which helped me keep enjoying game through the struggles.

i just switched a week ago from mouse to tablet (Huion 420) and to be honest, my aim is insane now, streams feel just like autopilot and it did hurt the first 2 days (grip) but i got 'used' and actually is pretty confortable to play (i use my pen like im writing), you just need to test it and then judge wich one is better for you. I'm for sure keeping my tablet play style, i just crushed my top pp plays in less than a week (350pp+) so never give up. PS: i haven't played osu!standard in 2 or more years, just came back cuz i got a new tablet for drawing and i just realize that i got insanely good in just a couple days. Maybe i'm blessed, maybe it's normal, i'll just keep playing and pushing my limits trying to get inside the top 100 at least. wish me luck lol

Yeah I’m so glad I never fully swapped to tablet, the main issues I have with mouse are inconsistent surface feel and mouse feet wearing out (until I swapped to ceramic feet). Other than that with time I’ve pretty much completely gotten used to dealing with mouse drift and don’t even notice it anymore.

I immediately switched to tablet once I knew I was going to give this game a serious try, and in my experience I did not have a hard time adapting to it. It might be because I'm a new player and never really got to play with the mouse (aside from 3 years ago for a few hours) so I didn't have to adapt to a new style of play. I even switched from dragging to hover and it took me about two days to get comfortable with. Maybe its still too early for me to realise the problems that might come along the way, but so far I don't have many complaints aside from sometimes my grip hurts my hand after awhile or it starts slipping. I think all in all tablet is still better than mouse, you just have to start using it as early as possible like I did.

I'm probably the only one playing osu with mouse like this but i developed a habit where i would play "well" when my hand is sweating profusely from moving the mouse and making the mousepad moist to reduce drag since my mousepad is rough when dry. Problem is, when you have a sweaty grip the mouse is going to inevitably slip so i had to wipe both my mouse and hand while playing (thanks pause feature). Worse, after a toilet break the mousepad would've gone dry and i wouldn't be able to play as well as before. Mouse drift does really suck on long maps especially with long and "fast" jump sections since being comfortable just don't work when your mouse is slowly drifting to the edge of the mousepad. My last issues with mouse is probably accidentally using the buttons and either getting a miss for tapping early or a 50 but of course i have to have it enabled to at least be able to play slow parts (slow sliders) with mouse only in emergencies where i need to scratch my face or check my phone for important notifs.

Now, at ~4.000 rank I'm frustrated that I changed back then, because holding a pen (no matter the grip) has always been uncomfortable for me. I don't know what it is, but I think something is wrong with my hands since I can't even straighten my fingers properly. Mouse is so much more comfortable for me to hold. I would like to switch, but I'm not sure if it's worth it because I know it will take a long time.

The thing that I find the most annoying about tablet is how inconsistent the friction between the nib and tablet can be. You can be playing well with strong friction then mid way through a song it can become buttery smooth for no reason out of nowhere. Annoying how the same nib can feel wildly different 30 seconds apart.

It was really weird, not just learning how to use the tablet, but also learning how to tap with my right hand. I just stuck with it, and my tapping speed and stamina are leaps and bounds better than they ever were when I played mouse. I was way worse with tablet for a few days, but after that, I shot off. Tablet isn't going to magically make you better, but tablet definitely fits for me.

This hits home because I just came back from a vacation and I have and cramps even when playing easy maps because of the grip. Touching the subject, how do you derust optimally? I personally play maps half star from my peak but meaby there's a better way. My derusting problem is that, because I hover, when I come back playing I start over aiming a lot and so I play with a bigger area every time lol. From 3 derusting sessions i upped it from 75 to 90 lmaoo.
