I would argue that the question was a fair question, to the point that D'Souza even agreed that Marx didn't overtly state the point of state takeover. So the kid was correct in that. That said, I thought D'Souza did a great job of defeating the 'no true Scotsman" fallacy that Communists attempt to use, by pointing out that every single attempt to create a Marxist utopia starts with State takeover of the economy, to the point that you can't have Marx's Communism without State run Socialism. The two concepts are married.

I remember being a college student thinking I knew everything, too. Immediately following college, I realized how much of an idiot I was in college, but now - following college - I know everything. Then some time later, I realized how little I really knew but now - sometime later - I know later. At some point in time, I realized that there is so much more that I don't know than (I think) I know, but enjoy the journey to knowledge, which includes listening and critically evaluating facts and opinions different from my own to help determine truth. In few instances was demeaning someone - which tends to show immaturity of mind - a good decision. Love begets love and hate begets hate. Lets love (and learn) a little more. Please.

There is a lack of pragmatism with those theories and ideas for some reason. I think maybe to the uninformed or intellectually lazy these ideas are projected from a moral type platform so people keep relooking at these ideas because it gives them a sense of feeling good about themselves. However, to them, it's all about the thought that counts, not the actual result of the implementation of the idea. There are massive shortages of food, energy , and medicine in Cuba and life there is becoming unbearable. These are the facts.

Intervented capitalism + keynesianism IS having some trouble in some areas (and that's what has been applied in USA since 1920-1930), and it's slowing the economic growth that americans would be having in a completely free market economy (no cronny capitalism, no bail outs, no overregulations, no subsidies for non-productive business, no minimum wages,...) Thanks to the presence of some free markets there are some successes in USA (1st technologic country [for now], 1st in drug production [for now] etc) and is still the first economy in the world: I don't know how long will that endure though.
