I understand what you're saying, but is it fair to the non Storm bowlers to continue letting people use balls that may be giving them an unfair advantage? This is a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation.

Changing the rules mid tournament will probably just cast a shadow over it, like this will probably end up been talked about more then the actual winner of the tournament or even scores of people who are bowling amazingly well.

@@Reginahomeboy What rule was changed though? Did they alter a rule or are they making sure that equipment adheres to the rules that already exist? Previously approved or not, those balls still must comply with a set of rules. I agree that testing every ball individually is the better course of action, but I can also see banning them outright. The way Storm seems to be cooperating lends me to believe that they have the data to support the decision. It would be nice if they shared it with the public as well since we're the target audience of not just the balls, but the shows and tournaments.

@@JediNit2 let me correct myself cause I see what I said wrong. If USBC suspected something wrong with the 6 balls in question they should of done the investigation before the start of the master's not in the middle of it. Cause like I said this ban of 6 balls which they are just upholding the hardness rule is great but doing it mid tournament will just cast a shadow over it. This news is already been talked about more then what's going on at the master's itself.

This is where I will freely admit the USBC is dropping the ball by not releasing all of the information and leaving so many questions unanswered. I just cannot believe Storm would be this compliant if there wasn't something there.

Each ball should be tested and those that test good can be used for the duration of this tournament. Those that test bad should be deemed illegal for competition use. 1) I don't think USBC is targeting Storm. I think Storm did what any competitive entity would do, which is toe the line to get maximum effectiveness out of their equipment. It's been painfully obvious that the Purple Hammer has been really effective (and promoting everyone and their grandma to throw urethane even when the lanes don't require it and blasting the integrity of the oil patterns apart, but that's another topic for another day) and it's mainly due to it being soft and getting more traction. Taking that advantage and applying it to loads of different coverstock/core combinations makes total rational sense for a competitive company. I'm sure the equipment passed at launch, and due to whatever circumstances (humidity, oil, additives, heat, use, etc) may soften rather quickly. That, or maybe the testing scenarios for companies aren't exactly the same, and I hear testing hardness is insanely precise, so the smallest difference in a variety of variables could skew the outcome. 2) Storm is also cooperating, and offering replacements, so they obviously aren't screaming from the mountain tops for their innocence. Take that for what you will. Could be them playing nice until they counter with a big old lawsuit, or maybe they knew they were playing with fire and got caught and this is their way of not getting in bigger trouble. I don't know, and I won't waste time trying to figure out which is which. 3) USBC technically didn't change any rules. All USBC competitions adhere to using certified USBC lanes and approved USBC equipment during competition. As soon as a ball isn't approved, it isn't allowed in competition. I'm sure there are USBC events held either daily or weekly all over the country, so there will always be something being effected no matter when they took approval away from these balls. That being said, removing approval only at the national level, during a national event is insanely short minded, especially considering the amount of amateurs at the event who can't mass replace their lost equipment on the fly. They say they did this in the name of fairness, but in doing so probably did something monumentally more unfair to a large portion of the tournament participants. 4) I probably sound like I'm defending USBC here, but I'm not. I think anyone who has control over something and doesn't have transparency should be looked at sideways, and they need to be held accountable. What were the numbers? Exactly how soft are we talking? Were they all soft, or a percentage? If a percentage, what was the percentage? Did the testing environment where they did this (behind the infamous black curtain) match specs in which they have to test hardness to get approved in the first place? Based on their own document about the process in 2020 (usbcongress.http.internapcdn.net/usbcongress/bowl/equipandspecs/pdfs/ESCBallHardnessReport2020.pdf) the balls have to be between 70-77 F. In a building that large, which that many people, who knows what can happen, and that doesn't even take into consideration humidity. I just know it's a sensitive process, and any sensitive process done in the field outside of a controlled environment leads to bad results. tldr; -Storm may have tried to toe the line on hardness and got nailed, doesn't mean they're trying to cheat or are bad people. -USBC aren't bad people, they're just idiots who obviously didn't consider all variables before landing the ban hammer. -Don't ban equipment only for national tournaments, during a national tournament when there are loads of amateurs who can't replace the equipment. Just ban the specific pieces of equipment that tested below the threshold. -Maybe don't do temperature/humidity sensitive testing inside a bowling center with a variable about of people that can effect loads a variables outside of your control and skew the results :( Go Brad and Kyle. You should buy some of their stuff they sell 🤣

@@TraumaER so every company is responsible for sending samples of their bowling balls to usbc to get approved before they are ever announced to the public. Knowing that let’s look at specter for example, samples shipped to usbc were tested at 75d which is 2 above minimum. However once they went into production 98% of all balls were produced under the minimum required hardness, including mine that predrilled was at 68d. Once going under investigation the usbc magically find 6 more balls that aren’t being made to meet standards at the production level. So rules did not change, no new rule was made, and usbc did not change any current rules, storm failed their pros, ams and fans

@@browdiewilliams328 your statement will/may make sense if the full data is ever released. However, there are many inconsistencies with what is going on. First, are they testing all balls or is something else going on? Second, your theory works if the 6+1 balls all came from the same facility so maybe the formula was messed up. Third, where is the data overall from approval to now banning? Fourth, what is the exact hardness instrumentation being used? It's not about rule changes. It's about a huge gap of mystery between what USBC 'approves' and what has taken place this month. Additionally, I don't recall a sport ever on the history of mankind where rules change in the middle of a competition. NFL notices concussions. Takes years to implement new hit rules. MLB notices something shady with the hitting. Same situation. If we are going by fairness, which is what the USBC pretends to be for, then either restart entire tournament, or continue with all balls and make changes at the beginning of the next tournament. Right now, the entire bowling community sees this as amateur hour.

I think you should be able to test the hardness and if your ball passes, even if it's on the banned list, it should be allowable. But also, they should wait for next tournament. Rules don't change at halftime of a basketball game or a football game.

You had me in the first half😂 rules didn’t change, any ball that does not meet usbc guidelines shouldn’t be played. That being said every ball mentioned should be tested on spot and if it meets all guidelines continue on as before and wait til after to bring the hammer down on storm, only people getting affected are ametuers

@@1SpartanD4L all testing up to this point has been voluntary, belmo said no, they said okay and he went and bowled. The only part that he might get in trouble for is the posting of said altercation, which is against his contract.

Someone at the USBC wanted to check what was coming to the event. Belmo would have seen them focusing on one of them, like the Phase 4 and he would have spread the word. Instead, they go this route... with Storm's blessing

I think what usbc did mid tournament is wrong! There are guys that aren’t able to get a ball like the tour players who are now there with one or two balls out of the 5-6 they brought.. that’s why usbc sucks because they think what they are doing is good for the sport when meanwhile it’s just making our sport less interesting and less fun!

Keep your equipment in specs or suffer. This is about storm letting it's bowlers down not about the USBC. They are enforcing a rule that is not a secret.

You guys are not only funny but helped me improve my game. I watched Brad at the Master this past weekend and chatted with him for a minute. It sucks that they banned the balls then and during the USBC Nationals on Monday they said that all the balls that were banned you can use but not at the USBC Nationals. I felt like that was a total kick in the butt. Brad was shooting well, but if he had his proper equipment, he be placed higher and beat AJ. Either way, glad to meet him, hope to learn more from you both and thank you.

Diggin ’ the channel boys as per usual! Trying to get back in to bowling but it’s tougher than I expected! First ball I ordered -discontinued. Second one- revoked! 3rd one I received quickly, now banned! Storm will have an exchange program so I’ll get with that. No big deal, it’ll get squared away & I have fun & informative videos to watch in the meantime. The approval process for equipment seems too sketchy, they need to fix it instead of backtracking!! Got to watch you guys bowl Tuesday during your first squad after we bowled Nationals. Definitely a grind out there - a couple of my friends paid the $500 to bowl. I couldn’t stomach it myself. As far as the rule change - two of the six balls I brought to bowl were the Altered and the Wolverine. Glad we bowled before they changed the rules.

That Hyper Cell Fused that Darren is drilling is pretty sick! Found one at my local alley, pretty much for the F (free), just needed to plug up the thumb hole and change insert sizes. Of the 6 balls I currently have, the Hyper Cell Fused is my favorite so far.

Know how you all feel. At least you can drill your own balls and have immediate access to replacement ones. Three of mine were (literally) banned just after purchase and drilling yesterday. Not cool. Now off to find my nova. 9 balls, only 4 can now be used. Smh.

Their terrible decision to enforce rules that have been on the books... OR... Storms terrible decision to allow inferior products to make it to the lanes? Yeah, it's a two way street. USBC's PR wasn't a good look, however, was Storm trying to skirt some rules?! Also, the final answer is the bowlers. They are responsible to make sure their equipment is up-to-snuff.

What the heck I never heard of an illegal bowling ball . A bowling ball is a bowling ball. Nothing else to it. This isn’t NASCAR with the next GEN car when teams try to modify single source parts. You guys have all sorts of bowling balls that are custom to you from oil patterns the brands, a symmetrical symmetrical urethane plastic and so forth as I’m learning on this channel can you guys please explain this? I am against rule changes in the middle of a game/race unless it’s a true safety issue like someone’s life is in danger. Sure that’s the only time for that, but otherwise don’t change it.

So just getting into bowling (so apologies if this is old to everyone else), and this is my first time seeing Cristian Azcona bowl. That has to be one of the most interesting swings I've ever seen. Somehow, he goes from the top of the ball on the backswing to inside and underneath with a great hook. And the camera placement means the magic happens behind the ball when it's at its apex on the backswing. What's going on there? How does he get back under the ball?

It's a tough situation. Ideally the rules shouldn't be changing mid tournament, but you also have to protect the field of play. There are Brunswick and Motiv staffers that already didn't have access to these balls. Allowing them to be used when we know a high percentage of them are out of spec would not be fair to them either. Damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario.

I bowled in a Pro-Am at Taylor Lanes in Michigan thirty some years ago. I walk in the doors to see Wayne Webb shaking one of those claw games hard enough to dislodge a prize, and Johnny Petraglia walked by with a drink in his hand and his arm around the cocktail waitress. I knew my respect and appreciation for Pro Bowling was well founded. You guys are GREAT!!!

I just bowled state and when I bowled I used the Trend 2. Now I feel like I have an unfair advantage over guys currently bowling the next few weekends since I put up solid scores. They should say that it goes into effect for any tournament that hasn't started yet imo.

Rule changes should be reserved for outside of the tour season just like other professional sports. They have such discussions in the off-season.

Really making "professional" bowling and specifically the USBC look very amateur and weak. For a sport that struggled for many years but has really seen a resurgence over the last few years, this a bad look. Maybe USBC should've had much more stringent testing in place years ago so things like this wouldn't happen.

If those balls that are now considered illegal for National tournaments where scores matter than they should also be illegal in USBC sanctioned leagues where scores also matter. This is a double standard that should NOT be allowed. It's kind of like banning certain baseball bats in the major leagues but allowing the same bats to be used in the minors.

I think the question is how do these balls get to the market in the first place if they are not meeting requirements? Any ban should be flat out across the board. What will happen now if if any regular amateur house bowler has a great night of bowling, there's going to be someone saying or implying they "cheated." Seems crazy to do this mid-tournament to me too.

It's not just Masters. USBC Open is already running too. People using a ball in team event, then suddenly can't use it for doubles/singles. Some have already completed their bowling, and others are on the way there now, that will have to struggle to get new equipment. Just really odd time for all

@@CKBowling1 Well the Spectre was soft all around... These balls all have a very small percentage that are soft. Its why so many of them passed testing before this.

@@JonHop1 They can also be banned in USBC sanctioned leagues if the center decides to put in the USBC's ban. I have a feeling it will lead to a full ban but we will see how this plays out.

@@kingbranrs85 It would be incredibly dumb for any bowling House to impose these stupid USBC sanctions on balls that have like a 5% chance of being slightly soft, I mean come on now... Yeah just cost your average poor person more money.. Is the USBC gonna pay for all the pro shops to replace and redrill balls and all of their labor? If so fine, make sure they pay every single dime and fully compensate every single pro shop that is lucky to squeak by on monthly rent and make bare minimum profits to feed their families.

I've got about a 1985 Black Ebonite in my garage I use to use that's still in really good shape, I kept it & added a 1986 Red Hammer..lol I'll donate that Ebonite to you, I'm sure it conforms 😅. I just think it's wrong to change rules in mid stream in any type of competition.

@@jimnewton5904 From what I understand, those six balls' shell hardness is low. Now, is that advantageous? No idea and equally I don't think the USBC bowlers know either. Interestingly, the PBA has stated that the balls are not banned in their tournaments. Now, there's lots of speculation going on and maybe we'll find out more in the future. I just think that the ruling should have been made before or after the tournament, not once the tournament had started. (The caveat to that stance is if people knew there was a problem and it would give them an advantage. That truly would be cheating.)

The game now is for a selected few, and the overall has become are you lucky , and take a guess, those who win are the lucky guesswinners,and should be in a new catagory of bowling when it comes to records as the game has changed.Two seperate and tottally different games ,1,ten pin bowling , and 2, two handed bowling. there are enough people in the game to make them both successful.

I grew up in an 8 lane house. Lane 1 had the front desk to the left in your vision and a walkway leading to the back, lanes 4&5 had posts in the way and lane 8 was right against the wall with the foul line actually drawn up the wall as well. On top of that it had the old AMF Magic Circle ball return system which was really large and got in your way if you stood far back on the approaches. Because of that I'm pretty used to bowling around distractions since every pair in the house had them. That being said I do agree when people design the alleys they really should think about things like that.

As a licensed PE (Professional Engineer) in 2 states and the lead engineer of a major company, when will someone ask the following: (1) Does the USBC know how to calibrate their hardness testing procedure? (2) Does the USBC even have SOPs for doing any type of testing OR approval of any bowling balls ever? (3) Is the instrumentation used by USBC something they found on Amazon or Made in China? Real authentic hardness testing instrumentation requires MONEY and a BRAIN by the tester. 💯

USBC does a lot of their testing at the ITRC I believe where they have many such devices. Instead of going after USBC's testing maybe you should look at the offender storm's quality control department? If their prototypes were up to snuff but nothing in production that means their quality control either failed or they were trying to game the system

@@Fejix87 Yes, but what he's trying to point out is a different style of hardness measuring instrument or a different procedure could result in different hardness values at different locations. Not controlling all variables leads to massive systemic issues with any measurement process. Having a different environment can also affect the results of the test. USBC should be transparent with this process because of its importance in measuring hardness specifically. Also, I think there should be a renewed stringency for testing balls or a longer approval process on both the manufacturer's and the governing body's side because having these "old" balls get approval revoked causes a lot of people to get understandingly pissed.

@@grillmaster95 this is the main point. Hardness testing at the precision and levels USBC claims to want to test at is not a simple process. It's not like your everyday ruler. The ruler you buy at the store is calibrated at some point to always read x inches or x cm. If you wanted to trace it all back, it is traced to a certified official calibrated measurement which then going backwards makes its way to your ruler you buy at your house. However, at precise levels, even your ruler isn't 12 inches or whatever it is. But, for everyday measurements, it is good enough. If you want to buy legit measurements, you need a calibrated digital caliper and those aren't cheap. We have those locked in a safe behind 2 security barriers LOL. So back to hardness, if ruler and length instrumentation tools are that complicated, imagine how hard it is to measure hardness of a bowling ball while maintaining same environmental conditions, same technique, and removing all variables. Because in the end, the human eye, hands, etc. can't tell the difference between 75D or 70D. That's just the way it is. And... if we are talking about tolerances, oh My! That's another problem altogether!

I would only take into consideration the handful of lanes that seem more 'dramatically' uneven in those topography booklets. you don't need another source of skull-f*cking to interfere with your concentration and mental strain throughout a tournament like this.

Got lucky with both the Phaze 4 and the Spectre. I almost bought both of them right before they got banned, but it must really suck to have the Phaze 4 and the other balls banned mid-competition when they’re some of the most popular picks. I think they should have just let you guys finish and not allow it in the future.

Here's the USBC Core Values (thanks for bring this up Sooner 300): Protect the integrity of the sport, Service Bowling's Stakeholders, Promote, Support and Develop Athletes Across All Skill Levels, Practice Financial Prudence, Thoughtful Planning Through Research, Promote Bowling as a Healthy Lifetime Sport, Deliver Unparalleled Service, and Invest in a Lifetime For the Sport. First, the horrible timing of this decision damages the integrity of the sport (deciding this mid tournament but letting these balls get used in league play??), This certainly ISN'T servicing the Stakeholders/Bowlers, For the bowlers who brought those balls, have used them with with no knowledge of their getting banned until 3/30 and have to replace them for Tournament Play).....nor is this a 'Financially Prudent Decision', or 'Unparalleled Service.....They messed this up big time, organization was founded in 2005, they need to listen to US, learn from this, and never let shenanigans like this happen again. Hoping that will be the case, as much as this blows my mind, want this to get worked out and for them to be successful.....Maybe the time will come for a new Bowling Organization to take care of the Bowlers. Feel bad for all of the STORM Bowlers, especially those who have used the 'banned balls', since they were noted as 'legal', without incident and some of them having to replace those either when they show up to bowl or have a week or so to replace and get comfortable with the replacements. USBC, this decision does make the have the Nationals Finals Results with an * next to them of NO FAULT of the pre 3/30 bowlers. Brad, Chris, Darren, Kyle and any of the bowlers that have been affected by this dumb decision, hoping y'all bowl real well and 'kick some butt'. 🎳

I don’t think storm did it intentionally, what likely happened was that the company that supplies storm with the cover stock materials changed one of the chemicals composition because of supply issues and didn’t inform storm, then the spectre was found to be soft, storm likely did some investigating and talked with their supplier, and found some additional balls that tested low, and let USBC know, and here we are now. Along with that I don’t get why people are saying usbc is targeting storm, as I said storm probably did their own testing as well, and it’s probably not something storm did intentionally Third why are people so upset about the black curtain to me it makes sense, assuming you have someone not preforming the test listing who’s are whose then that person takes them in (not the player) and another person preforms the testing. They want this to be as unbiased as possible for instance there are a lot of people who think rash got off easy or to strict, if the person preforming the test sees they are testing rash’s equipment they could cause the test to lean one way or the other. from a bias standpoint it just makes sense

I just read up that they said they will be allowed for this rest of the 2022 season and that they will be testing alot more in the future. basically it just opened up a whole new can of worms for us. This is going to be a spiraling effect on the industry. How many customers are going to lose their equipment this year at the national and have to get them replaced? Will the companies help out or are those bowlers up a creek? Its really going to get testy I feel this summer.
