My twins are 9 weeks old now and we have SIX children ages six and under! I still think back to that 19 week ultrasound and can't believe what has happened, and that I'm now nursing and caring for two babies. It is an amazing journey, but it is a rollercoaster! Hey there! I'm a German midwife and first of all: Congratulations on your second baby!! Very happy for you! 😊 And I know what it feels like to have an unplanned pregnancy but he was the perfect gift from God 🥰 I wanted to say something for your upcoming birth, because I think it is important that I tell others what I know so they have the chance of a better birth experience. I would highly recommend to carefully choose a birth place and not go to the very first hospital. Especially in the U.S. I noticed many things are being done in hospitals that I think are cruel and wrong, like forbidding the labouring mother to eat or drink (nutrition is so important!), sending her back home while heaving contractions because they say she is not far enough in labour (horrible!) or force her to lay on her back, with her legs strapped down and tell her to push like crazy with no time to gain some strength. Did you know that laying on your back is the worst possible birth position there is? It LITERALLY has got not one single advantage. The only reason doctors or midwives would want you to be in supine position is so they can have a better look and don't have to work as hard themselves. But it actually prolongs the birthing process and increases the risk of tearing, the need of more pain medication and artificial labour hormones, the risk of higher stress level for the baby and even the risk of needing a vacuum-extraction or a C-Section! On the opposite: Being in an upright labour position (like standing, squatting, all-fours-position, kneeling, sitting on a birthing stool or water birth in a birth-tub) decreases the pain and helps bringing down the baby much faster due to the gravity that helps. Also your pelvis bones are able to move which helps to maneuver baby's head through. Just before being born the head needs to move around the coccyx and when you are in a supine position it can't properly move around it but needs to be born "up" against all gravity. That is a MUCH harder process for the mother. There is literally no advantage to being in bed versus upright and moving. Another thing is that I would highly recommend to look into the possibility of a birth in a birth centre/house or a home birth! Maybe that is something for you. 🙂I did both with my two children and it was the best decision that I could have made! I would never ever go to a hospital for the birth of my children, because I know about all the things that are done there routinely that I don't think are helpful or good. Outside of a hospital you have a much higher probability of a self-determined, upright and beautiful birth experience only with your husband and a midwife, with no stress or pressure or someone who would force you to push when you know you could - and would want to - do it on your own. I thought I might say these words and maybe they are helpful to you and your next birth or to anyone who reads this. Greetings from a midwife who absolutely loves her job and believes in beautiful, calm, self-determined, upright and even romantic birth experiences because I have experienced them myself! ♥

I'm planning for a homebirth, and unfortunately, there's a lot of evidence that goes against what most US hospitals do. Some are definitely progressing and better, but there isn't much choice in the land of the free, unfortunately. It's pretty terrible but I also understand why many women choose and want to be in the hospital. If you do unmedicated, a birth center is perfect. I toured a few but still want to be at home for myself. Thanks for sharing!!
@baileyholcomb6818
@baileyholcomb6818 Год назад
The only reason they don’t allow laboring women to eat/drink is if there is an emergency that requires general anesthesia, she can aspirate and die. its not to be malicious or rude to laboring moms at all, it's to save their lives should something happen. Totally on the same page with you on laboring in an upright position, though.
@jule3438
@jule3438 Год назад
@@baileyholcomb6818 unfortunately that is misinformation and outdated. ☝🏼 There is ABSOLUTELY no reason to deny the women foods or drinks, even if they were going to have an emergency C-Section. The disadvantages of not eating outweigh any slight possibility of difficulties during an operation. In Germany for example, every women that wants to can eat and drink during labour and I don't think anyone has ever died from choking🙂
@carlac33

Yes! I've had 3 hospital births and I am DONE with OBs pushing pitocin on me, leading to a whole cascade of events. At this point I've researched birth to death and it is concerning how hospitals set everything up based on worse case scenarios but then leading to this cascade of events. Hospitals are always 20+ years behind the latest research. Next birth will for sure be a home birth or birth center.

About Homebirth: Midwives are highly trained to notice “yellow/pink flags”(meaning they are slight warning signs, not yet a red flag) in other words, it’s VERY rare that emergencies happen at home. Midwives are very intuitive to your body signs and if there is a slightest warning sign, they will get a hospital involved (if you allow them too) Homebirths are incredibly safe.

I'm 27 with 4 kids, I was pregnant with my first baby at 17 and my last 3 babies are each 18 months apart. My second baby was an "I didnt know I was pregnant" baby and he was born in the bathtub an hour after my water broke. Mom/parent shaming is a given so never let that get to you. You guys should let us send in our birth stories and read them on the podcast, I'd love to share my crazy stories. So much trauma even with an easy labor, so I totally understand your emotions with this pregnancy. I love watching and relating to your content. You guys are amazing parents ❤️

Oh man! I love your passion for getting involved with foster care and adoption. Definitely something I wish was talked about more. I have been working in the system for 12 years in California and there are SO MANY ways that people can help that is beyond fostering and adopting from donations, to mentoring, to volunteering during the holidays. I think it's important to know when diving into this area, that every state does it differently in regards to services and support offered. California for example is one of a few states that offer "extended foster care" so when students turn 18 they aren't out on their own, but have support during those crucial young adult years of getting a job, going to college, and really learning how to adult. I don't know how AZ does things, but a good starting point, is seeing if there are any local non-profits that serve foster youth in your area. CASA (Court appointed special advocates) is another nation wide organization that helps mentor kids in care and advocate for them in court. There's plenty of more, but I will stop there for right now. Happy to help if you have any questions and keep up the great work and using your platform for good! God Bless

They’re best friends, I’m exhausted 😂, but I’ve found my fears are almost always bigger than the reality. My life verse is Gods Grace is sufficient. I have 3 under 3 (14 months apart and then 13 months apart) and it definitely is tough but so worth it. We have a boy in the middle and he absolutely loves his sisters and the girls are so cute together. Our youngest is almost 3 months old now, but our oldest loves her siblings so much and she never had a jealousy phase because she never understood what that concept was. Hang in there with the hardest part. It does get easier and you fall into a routine that works for you and your household. When they get older, it gets easier. Y’all got this.

Hi Abby! Idk if you’ll see this - but regarding nursing while pregnant I asked my dr and have a friend who is a midwife - I had my boys a year and a half apart - they both said it is completely safe to nurse the entire pregnancy. Some people don’t think it is because n*pple stimulation can help with contractions (sometimes) but that’s in cases where a woman is already full term and hasn’t been nursing so her body isn’t used to is - similar to how you shouldn’t start new workouts, but can continue your current workout routine. For me, my milk started to turn back into colostrum so my baby didn’t like it so he started to self wean - but if Griffin doesn’t mind any changes in the taste of milk go for it! If it became unsafe they’ll tell you ❤ good job mama

When I was pregnant with my oldest but didn't know it yet (we weren't trying), we had a Halloween party, and I had I think three good sized, kinda strong margaritas. It's probably the most I've ever drank at once, honestly. When I found out I was pregnant like 2 weeks later, I was SO freaked out. I was about 3-4 weeks pregnant with him at the party. Long story short, he's absolutely FINE. Try not to worry, and don't beat yourself up!
