Yeah, Rendang is from Minangkabau (West Sumatra). Ayam Geprek is From Java Island. Ayam Penyet (Penyek) is from Java Island. Some food & drink from Indonesia is also popular in neighbour country like Singapore and Malaysia, such as Es Cendol, nasi padang (rendang, etc). It was brought by imigrants from Indonesian Islands.

Interesting that you chose Padang and West Sumatra as your first destination in Indonesia. The majority of the people in West Sumatra are of Minangkabau ethnicity, the world’s largest matrilineal society where property and clan names are passed down from mothers to daughters. They fancy themselves as pious Muslims and are very stubborn about keeping their culture to the point that they reject influences from outside. That’s why despite being the provincial capital of West Sumatra full of a group of people known for their trading traditions, Padang is not as advanced as other cities. Unlike in many Indonesian cities and provinces, you don’t see many national and international chains of hotels, cafes, restaurants, etc because the local decision makers make it hard for them to enter the market. West Sumatra is amazing, with intriguing culture, delicious food, gorgeous nature with picturesque rolling hills and far-flung islands that are only popular among world surfers. If there were no resistance towards investments, it could really become a great tourist destination. Hope you enjoyed your time there! @@EllisWR supporting local people is the way to go, good for you! 👍 Oh I forgot to mention that the “nut” that you had with your ayam geprek is dog fruit, called “jariang” in Minangkabau but the vendor said “jengkol” because ayam geprek is from Java and that’s what they call it over there. Where I’m from (South Kalimantan) we usually boil it with slaked lime and serve it with salted coconut cream.

Guys, I would like to see you visit Pariaman city, just 1 hour train ride from Padang. You'll find beautiful beach there, plenty of delicious food, and a nice 5 km walking trek across the beach.
The bottled coffee that you found at the shop is not really for serious coffee drinkers, if you want to try real Sumatra coffee you can buy the Sumatra coffee beans (there are several brands e.g excelso or tanamera), those brands also have coffee shops and you can find them in the big cities.

Wow, if you are a food lover to Indonesia the right choice because Indonesia has more than 5000 traditional foods and with an area of about 1.9 million km, 700 more languages and thousands more cultures, and with thousands of megalithic places before Christ, I hope you not only go to Sumatra but explore other islands also not only to Bali, there are so many incredible natural landscapes in Indonesia even snowy places. And I would like to give some references to RU-vid channels of foreigners living in Indonesia who might be able to help your trip (Kristian Hansen, Sam Indowild, the Lost Boys, Bule Bolang, Gypsy in Sneakers, Laurence Benson, Buaya barat, scoopy gang, Bags Packed Family) actually still quite a lot but this in my opinion is enough and one of them is from England too. @@EllisWR Everyone has their own taste in their place, I appreciate it, I don't know if in Sumatra there is a culinary bazaar or not because in Java usually every certain month there is an Indonesian culinary event filled with many Indonesian food tents in each city center, what I know is maybe only Medan and the food there is delicious and every island in Indonesia has a different taste of food and it is unique. A little curly, maybe if you are a food vloger, I hope to find out where the origin of the food comes from so that there are no sensitive issues from some countries

Many claims rendang from minangkabau.. but, is it true. You need to make a research or thesis to prove it. Hundred of years ago, indonesia, malaysia, singapore is not exist. Local peoples travelling around in Southeast Asia for business purpose, trading, education, marriage, expanding empire & so on.. melaka sultanate in south malaysia, once one of the richest kingdom in the world. During its peak in 1482 to 1499, there are hundred of cultures, 84 languages, immigrants gathered here. Many invention also happen during this period.
