I was working in a record store in the early 80's and Phil Mogg came in at 2 in the afternoon, falling down drunk with a lady on each arm. He bought a load of blues albums and left. At 9pm the same day he was perfectly fine and sang wonderfully through their entire set.

Starting with " Phenomenon" , to "Force it" , to "No heavy petting" , to "Lights out", to "Obsession" , to "Strangers in the night", every single one of these albums is utterly spectacular and shows the insane progression of Schenker's guitar mastery! My favourite is No heavy petting, one of the most overlooked! The first Schenker era (the 70's) and the second Schenker era (the 90's) are the peak of this legendary band. All the rest is worth a listen too of course, but with Schenket they peaked in everything!

Please make reaction to Diana Ankudinova! Diana’s a contralto gifted with naturally occurring polyphonic overtones. Diana's voice is like a rainbow of colors now and there's a pot of gold that's the gift at the end of the rainbow, and the rainbows being the various tones that and qualities that she has to offer through the song. Diana's polyphonic overtone sounding is indescribable happiness, delight and goosebumps. To perform all this with a contralto chest register, combining with a mixed and head register, ending each phrase with his own unforgettable yodeling technique, no one is able to perform songs, as Diana does.

I think that this is THEE band (and of the era of the band), that the studio recordings are no match for the LIVE versions that are on "Strangers in the Night". It gave new life to the songs and a young Michael Schenker just killing it on his Flying V. Its great to hear how the studio recordings sounded with all the nuances, but Live, it has a whole different dynamic, and that the band are so tight. Though I know that, especially back in the day, there is a lot of over-dubbing, and many people have mentioned that "Live" recordings back then were harder to pull-off. But still, a fantastic record - my favorite Live Album next to "Deep Purple - Made in Japan".

Michael Schenker is one of the most influential guitarists who still is pretty unknown to the public. People know the players he has influenced but you get blank stares when talking about him. BTW he is the Scorpions' Rudolf Schenker's "little" brother, and had multiple stints at his older brother's band. I like both of them but I enjoy Michael's playing more. He's still going BTW, he's had multiple bands, most of the time it was the Michael Schenker Group, but there also was McAuley Schenker Group, Michael Schenker's Temple of Rock and similar iterations. They're worth listening to as well.

I've been playing guitar for 40 years. When I was a little kid Chuck Berry got me interested in guitar. He made it look so fun and cool. I goofed around with it. When I heard Michael Schenker on the Strangers in the NIght album, I got serious about it. Without Michael, I would never have started. He is a legend player, but a fragile personality and his demons kept him, and UFO, from ever getting as big as they could have in the USA.

The definitive version of this song is on their live album from 78 Strangers In The Night. Michael Shenkers solo is longer and more intense. Next do ROCK BOTTOM from that epic live album.

Their bassist Pete Way just recently passed away... was a huge influence on Steve Harris and Nikki Sixx... was friends with Geddy Lee...UFO was a big influence on Metallica as well... They were from the UK except Michael Schenker... You should definitely check out the entire Lights Out and Obsession albums. Also Michael's solo work with his band MSG is also great. Michael has fantastic taste and bends like no one else.

Awesome song choice. This is the UFO that I'm a major and complete fan of. I have no idea how I first discovered them, but it was in the late '70s. I was a young preteen brat, and my brother is three years older than me. But one of my brother's friends (and neighbor) had a much older brother that indirectly introduced me to Rush, and probably UFO. He would play his music loud and I was hooked. I would thank him if it were possible! 👍 If I may add, Rush is the best, but everybody reacts to them. Don't stop!!! But more UFO, please!😆

Michael was in the Scorpions for only one full album and part l of another. From 1974-1979, he was with UFO and really took them from obscurity to superstardom. As far as that 80’s metal scene you talked about, Michael Schenker was a major influence on nearly every metal guitarist in the 80’s. Check his wiki page and you will see a list of about 35 guitarists, most of whom you’ve heard of, who list him as a major influence. And it isn’t just because of his play. He is the best metal guitarist ever, in my opinion, bit he also influenced ( And is still influencing) Metal stylistically. Michael popularized the Flying V guitar and most people who play one, even now were influenced either by him directly, or by someone else who was influenced by Michael. To this day, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth tells people he plays a Flying V because of Michael Schenker. By the way, Michael and several members of the Scorpions are from Hanover.

Hey Nick! Hey Lex! Thanks for doing that one. A little side note, I thought for years that song was called Misty Green and Blue 🙄. Welcome to UFO! I’m embarrassed to say though, I only know three of their songs; “Rock Bottom”, “Too Hot to Handle”, and “Love to Love”. Rock Bottom’s always been my favorite though. It just has this unforgettable guitar riff. Check it out, and you’ll see what I mean. Oh, and by the way, the guitar player is Michael Shenker who was in Scorpions early on with his brother Rudolph Shenker. And Rudolph is still with Scorpions since the beginning! It’s so cool watching people like yourselves discovering all these songs that I grew up listening to and to see you thoroughly enjoying them! Take care, see you soon! 🎸

UFO is terrific. I saw them live around 1978. Strangers in the Night is one of the greatest live albums and you should very much enjoy going down the UFO rabbit hole. BTW, their first two album are more space rock but they became a hard rock band with some excellent ballads. They are still around but the singer talked about leaving before Covid but now it looks like they may stay together, at least for the time being.

Scorpions were the foundation of UFO and MSG (Michael Schenker Group) Rudolf & Michael Scenker formed Scorpions . UFO, Technically a British rock group, started around 1969 - Michale Schenker joined them in 1973 for their most productive period. This album (1977) also had hits "Too Hot to Handle" and the title cut "Lights Out"!

Coincidence time. There's a screen picture of Pink Floyd's Animals in the background, depicting Battersea Power Station - and UFO's Lights Out album cover photos were taken INSIDE the same building. 🙂 I think Tubular Bells came out in '71. UFO started around that time, but played music closer to space rock then. Great to hear Phil Mogg's voice getting some praise. Like Deep Purple's Child in Time, Love to Love is a largely instrumental song, but, again, when the vocals happen, they happen! When producer Ron Nevison played this to record company people, they applauded.🙂
