Agreed. This is one of the few cases where I would recommend a live version of almost any song from Strangers in the Night over the studio versions. Every guitar solo is pure fire! Arguably the greatest live album of all time. Someone should react to the entire live album (hint, hint) 😁
Iron Maiden and Metallica both cover this song in homage to UFO. Michael Schenker is an amazing guitarist that put UFO on the map. Great pick Lexi, love this track brings back memories.
Thank you Vick. Those of us who grew up on UFO know how awesome this band is. The entire album Phenomemon is incredible. I always love watching your reactions but seeing you love one of our favorite bands is a special feeling. Thank you for this. As a extra bonus I'm loving those earrings too.
Thanks so much for the shout out and finally getting back to the legendary UFO, they were so important to everyone I hung out with back in the 70s and 80s, they have a treasure trove of awesome music, especially when Michael Schenker and later, Paul Chapman were on lead guitar, they were absolute fire. Next try Lights Out, This Kids or Rock Bottom, they are studio classics but the definitive versions are on Strangers in the Night Live. They are at their peak on that album and you will be amazed at the musical magic on display. Thanks again for taking a shot at such underrated but important music in the history of hard rock and heavy metal, the were there when things really got going and we are all better off for it. Enjoy! 🎸
Doctor Doctor did get some airplay on college and hard rock radio back in the day and is a nice intro but as you will see in time, they have much more hard hitting, advanced and epic songs for you to enjoy. I look forward to hearing them as time permits. I envy you guys, hearing all this great music for the first time...
UFO were never quite as successful as they deserved to be, but they had a very dedicated fanbase and produced some great hard rock. I loved the 'Obsession' album. Thanks guys, another really good pick!
Michael Schenker started with Scorpions in early 70s. After the album Fly to the Rainbow 1974, he left Scorpions for UFO. Michael Schenker joined Scorpions again on their album Lovedrive.
It seems that Michael Schenker was not part of the lineup, but he was co-writer of three songs. According to Wikipedia, M. Schenker co-wrote Far Away, Fly People Fly, and Fly To The Rainbow.
Rock Bottom should be next -- you will get a heavy dose of Michael Schenker goodness. -- Yes, Michael Schenker left Scorpions to form UFO. He was replaced in Scorpions by Uli Jon Roth, and the band remained heavy for several years (Sails of Charon, Virgin Killer). When Uli Jon Roth was replaced by Mattias Jabs, Scorpions became much more commercial, but remained very heavy until about 1985 or so. UFO never got huge - IMO, vocalist Phil Mogg is great, but he avoided hard rock clichés in his vocal delivery. Their Strangers in the Night live album from 1979 is lauded as one of the finest live rock albums ever.
Definitely a good UFO song. UFO was an influence on Iron Maiden. Doctor Doctor is what Iron Maiden uses as their entrance music before they go on stage. Bassist Steve Harris named "Love to Love, from UFO''s 1979 album "Strangers in the Night , as one of the eight songs that changed his life. He explained, "UFO have loads of great songs, and loads of great albums, but this version in particular, on "Strangers in the Night", really struck a nerve with me. It's the light and shade and the dynamic build-up which does it for me.
The ever popular boogie bass line gets everybody onboard and was very common in the early 70s along with a blues influence in some of the bands. In any era, there's always musicians borrowing aspects from the past.
As other people have probably said already, you guys HAVE to do Rock Bottom. Specifically the version off of their live album “Strangers in the Night.”
Glad you enjoyed it guys, but the live version on Strangers in the Night will just blow you away. One of the greatest intros ever. Saw UFO at Hammersmith Odeon a few times. Always came away unable to hear for 48 hours, my retinas blinded by light, total sensory deprivation and utter happiness. Brilliant.
UFO (from England) influenced many hard rock and heavy metal bands through the years. Their live album: Strangers in the Night is frequently considered one of the best if not the best hard rock albums of all time. Songs like Rock Bottom, Lights Out, Too Hot to Handle, and Only You Can Rock me are killer tracks!
UFO is an English band. "Phenomenon" was their 3rd album. Other popular songs by UFO include: "Rock Bottom", "Natural Thing", "Lights Out", "Too Hot to Handle" and "Only You Can Rock Me". Iron Maiden have named UFO as one of the influences on their sound. Fortunately for me, as a teenager during the 1970's, I was introduced to UFO by KSHE 94.7 FM in St. Louis, Missouri. Critics consider UFO as one of the artists that were the transition between hard rock and heavy metal. By the way, the term "heavy metal' DID exist during the early- and mid-1970's, and was being applied to groups like Black Sabbath, Atomic Rooster, Bloodrock, and even Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple.
UFO were primarily a hard rock band, but they did delve into mellower stuff too. Rock Bottom, Lights Out and Too Hot To Handle (studio versions) are other rockers by UFO you should check out. Crystal Light is an excellent mellower tune by them. The guitarist is Michael Schenker. UFO were from the UK.
When this was released as a single in the UK in 1974 we tried so hard to get this away into the charts - but although people loved to dance to it in discos, for some reason it never sold enough to show up! Such a shame. When it was re-issued in 1979 it did - just about - get into the UK top 40. It deserved much better.
You 2 probably know this but Michael Schenker the guitar player, fantastic guitar player, he’s from Germany 🇩🇪 and UFO is a band from the UK. He’s a great songwriter of guitar parts, great solos. I’ve been listening to him since the 1970s. Here in North Carolina and I play guitar myself.
Good solid song and my first time listening to it. Not quite in the league of my favorite prog. Rock bands like YES, ELP, early Genesis, early Tull, Kansas, or Rush.
FYI, UFO had one guitarist, Michael Schenker, who did play on The Scorpions first album with his brother Rudy. The other members in UFO were British. Some future song suggestions: Lights out, Too hot to handle, Natural thing, This kids, and Rock bottom, the live version is a must listen, for the guitar playing alone. Michael Schenker was one of the best guitarists of that era.
To be fair to Lex, the one you did before (Love to Love) was kind of a ballad (with heavier parts), but the absolute best kind, and one of my all time favorite ballads. But UFO was primarily hard rock.
Too Hot To Handle was my go-to for UFO. Saw them open for Cheap Trick and Blue Oyster Cult in the late 70s. Great show. Met some BOC members at a coffee shop after the show.
Hi, Doctor Doctor was the first UFO track i heard & yes Nick we used to call it hard rock or heavy rock back then. Interesting fact about the term 'Heavy Metal', first time i heard it used was by a London glam rock/hard rock band formed in 1972 who called themselves The Heavy Metal Kids after a gang in William S Burroughs novel Nova Express!
UFO more or less taught Rush on how to tour in the early days. When you have Michael Schenker, Phil and Pete Way as mentors then Rush being in there late teens just wow. PS before Niel joined in that time period. Just amazing bit of rock and roll knowledge with the British invasion. Too Hot to Handle back in the day.
UFO was a huge influence on bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard and Guns N' Roses. The most underrated band in rock history IMHO. Their live album "Strangers In The Night" is one of the greatest live albums ever. Lights Out is a hard rock banger that you must do.
The chronological progression of their catalog beginning with this album and peaking with one of the most iconic live albums of all time (the Michael Schenker era) is why this is one of my top three all time favorite bands. There are simply too many notable tracks and performances to mention. It only gets better from here.
I really like your reactions, the picking of songs, good taste, bias often prog rock and a lot of favorites of me, Nick is German, me too, even much older. So good job guys !
My best friend Dan was with my brother almost 40 years ago when he was at a crossroads between continuing with drugs or moving past them. It was at a party, and he said my brother had a tab of LSD on his fingertip. As he put it in his mouth, the song that started playing was UFO’s “Lights Out.” His light has been out to this day. 😞
UFO was considered on the heavy side when they hit the scene. At this point I'd call it Lite to Medium Hard rock. I will say the The HRF's (Hard Rock Freaks) were generally the ones listening to them.
Take a close look at the cover artwork. It is a picture of a girl taking a picture of her husband throwing a hubcap in the air.If you look at her face she is mad at us for exposing the hoax. This album was created by Hipgnosis the guys that gave us all the Pink Floyd and later Led Zeppelin album covers.
UFO was my favorite band in High School, well before Senior year when I shifted to New Wave. I got to see them back then too. I saw them open for Cheap Trick, which wasn't the best combination because UFOs fans were older, high school and smoking weed beside Cheap Trick's younger fans and their Moms. They were both good.
Yes, sometimes there are strange combinations; I guess "made" by record companies ... I once saw a german poprock band named Wallenstein open for Scorpions. Some real bad Scorpions fans had brought raw eggs to throw them at Wallenstein, some ended at the bassdrum ... at first I thought it's funny, but then I felt bad for Wallenstein, I guess, they really didn't want to be there 😞
I found it! Your reaction to UFO!!! Thanks Nick Provost(?)!!! I got to see them FRONT ROW; I could have grabbed the lead guitar if I was dumb enough, I was that close and it was a small venue. I saw the Mechanix tour. It wasn't Michael Schenker anymore, by then. I tie this band as my all time favorite next to Rush. Only Rush outlasted them. Their last great album is Misdemeanor; my opinion.
But in the beginning it was only in the studio, because the Phenomenon line up only had Michael Schenker as guitarplayer, later on they had a second for live shows ...
This features the legendary guitarist Michael Schenker (his personality is not so legendary, but that's another story), who is also famous for his time in the Scorpions, and his own band MSG. If you go to a Maiden concert you'll hear this just before they take the stage, they've been doing that for decades. They also did a cover of this when Blaze was the singer. Turn up the distortion on the guitar and make the drum louder and you have metal. About the Scorpions, Michael left after the first album, but Uli Roth took his place, their music from that period is well worth checking out. Not standard metal with power ballads like they became in the 80's. More blues oriented (because of Uli Roth), and not what you woudl expect. The album with Michael in '72 is actually more psychadelic.
More UFO suggestions. As I am typing this you mentioned Space Child (a slower song) and Rock Bottom (a rocker) were going to be two of my suggestions. Also, Lights Out, Cherry, Only You Can Rock Me, Too Hot to Handle, Out in the Streets and I'm a Loser would be my suggestions..
Hi Nick, Hi Lexi. Welcome back Lexi. Hope you are ok. Thank you so much for reacting to Doctor Doctor from UFO. A brilliant rock band who I saw on this tour in 1974 ...I was 17 at the time. I 'm glad you mentioned Rock Bottom...a brilliant track from the same album 👍. A fun fact...Kirk Hammett from Metallica loves UFO and joined them onstage to play Doctor Doctor. ..I think in 2019. Also Iron Maiden play this track before every gig. Looking forward to your next reaction. Take care, stay safe. Peace and love from Liverpool UK 👍✌️🤘☮️
Okay did a little checking to jog my memory. Lex may have thought light rock because Love to Love is a ballad and has strings but also does get heavy. I loved Lights Out as a kid but the strings kind of made it over produced. Too Hot to Handle and Lights Out (the song) are great because they both have 2 solos, at the middle and at the end of each song. I also really like Electric Phase from that album and how it drifts into Love to Love. Now, the album Force It also has many great songs, 5 of which are on the Live album. I also found out that 2 songs on Force It were co-written by Michael and Rudolf Schenker + Phil Mogg. That being said, from Force It, I choose track #1, Let It Roll for a #nicknlexrequest. The guitar sound has such an awesome reverb. Michael's wide vibrato on notes was something quite unique.
Hi Guys ! I don't have any albums by UFO but I do know this song. I probably know a few more but wont know until I hear them. There were so many rock groups about during the 70's it was impossible to get to know all of them. I have to agree with Lex this was not that heavy. It was more pop rock. It was a chart success so more commercially radio friendly. Not heard this in years. I enjoyed it. Thankyou ! Byeee ! Jim X
Young Michael Schenker left The Scorpions and became Guitarist of UFO. The first Album with Michael is Phenomenon, their first Hard Rock Album. Before this UFO did more Space Rock/Progressive Rock. Hear: Prince Kajuku or Boogie for George
Classic as much a song can be classic. There are 3 UFOs for me: Phase 1 was space rock with Mick Bolton on guitar. My number 1 song of this phase is Boogie. Then Michael Schenker joined the band (as described by other subscribers) and this phase was the best: Schenker / Mogg were a great composing duo, but they had their personal problems with each other, there are stories about batteries. But the music was great, 5 studio albums, topped by a fantastic live album. Phase 3 was post Michael era and I lost interest. In 2019 I saw UFO live for the very first time with Phil Mogg on vocals the only remaining founding member, doing a great job at the age of 70 ! And I felt like a teenager singing along to Only you can rock me and Rock bottom .... sweet memories Watching the final discussion I have to say, this was what was called hardrock in the early 70s .... and Scorpions always had their ballads, but came from 70s hardrock to even harder rock in the 80s, headlining stadium concerts in the USA. Iron Maiden still plays this song from tape starting each concert, but I don't know since when, I saw them in 2005 and 2008 but don't remember, when I first heard Doctor Doctor at a Maiden concert.
Love UFO but did not get exposed to the early work until Too Hot to Handle broke the FM airwaves. Lights Out, Obsession, Strangers in the Night... that's the UFO super arc. Even after Michael left and Paul Champman came in, UFO continued to write really decent songs into the early-mid 80s. You think you're listening to hard rock, then WHAM here come this melody. Hard songs, soft tunes. Always felt they were reaching for something, but didn't quite garner the success they deserved. A working band for sure. Saw them live 3 times too. I have to be honest. There were a couple of bands' shows I attended, and I remember thinking, "I don't need to be here". Not with UFO, baby! An excellent live band.
@@rudolfbecker4313 The last time I saw them was a free show in San Antonio. Not sure who sponsored it. Vinnie Moore on guitar. I managed to get Phil's autograph on Obsession. The band walked out to sign autographs and you would have thought it was the Beatles had walked. I arrived early and a sweet spot in front. Good show from what I can recall. But I don't recommend free shows. Just plain nuts. I'm more than happy to pay for the seat.
Ok now that you discovered UFO i think youll really enjoy stranger's in the night also i think youll enjoy rock bottom on the same album as stranger's in the night
Hi guys, new subscriber here. Its a good track but its UFO Lite (a bit 12 bar). Try 'Lights Out' - far stronger or maybe 'Too Hot to Handle' or 'Rock Bottom'. Saw UFO live a couple of times, Schenker is a genius player.
Love to Love is a lighter song with an excellent solo. I consider UFO hard rock but they are not afraid of ballads. Back in the 70s, it was not unusual, actually pretty common for bands to have hard rock songs mixed with mid tempo and ballads. Michael Schenker was in UFO.
There are certain bands and certain albums that where there is a studio verion and a live version, go with the live version. This band is one of those bands. Their live album Strangers In The Night is one of rock’s greatest albums. That live album is worth a listen start to finish. While Michael Schenker tends to dominate the conversation don’t discount the other members. Andy Parker is a great drummer. I’m sure other have already mentioned that Michael Schenker was only 18-19 when this studio version was recorded.
