Our Ford F150 Lightning Is No More - But The Replacement Is Already Here!

Two weeks ago, Nikki hit a spot of sheet ice underneath freshly fallen snow, and her truck Adira Tal- a Ford F150 Lightning Lariat - lost all control. Ultimately, the truck slid down hill and into a power line, pulling the power pole ontop of the truck and making it a total loss.
Luckily for Nikki, she escaped the downed power line, and the accident itself with minimal damage, so two weeks later, she's back behind the wheel of a new vehicle.

Hello, Nikki and Ortega. You are looking good, Nikki and I hope that you are taking care of your mental health as well. Having been in bad accidents in the past as both a driver and passenger, it is important to acknowledge and deal with any trauma you are experiencing from the initial event. You did mention it in the video talking about the accident and I thought it was worth checking in with you on that to make sure you know that we all are here for you and that you are loved and honored by all of us. TEN is not only a resource for EV and clean energy fans but you are what makes TEN and we need you for as long as you can and care to do it.

Hello. I would just like to say I am so sorry you had this terrible experience with your first Lightning. I had watched your videos as you first bought the truck and your insights were helpful to me when I purchased my own 2022 Lightning, although I could only locate an XLT with a standard battery. About the time you had your mishap, I had my Lightning in to my dealer to take care of 3 recalls. While there my salesman came to me and made me an offer on my truck toward the purchase of a 2023 Lightning Lariat, equipped very similarly to Ortega, however in Star White tri coat. The deal was too good to pass up and I am loving my truck and will continue to enjoy following you and your adventures with your truck. Best of wishes to you and hope you heal up soon.

How does an adult have fluffy animals in a truck? Unless it is my mini-T Rex who rides between my gear shifter and and coffee cup in my Lightning. He’s a ferocious tuck guard, ready to attack miscreants at all times. And don’t even try to change stations before a song finishes, or you could lose an arm! And more to the point - I am glad you were able to get a replacement Lightning right away. Enjoy!

Wow, so pleased you got your new to you truck so quickly and got the previous loan paid off too! Such great news, fully comp for the win, it helped us get our used EV when our ice car was written off generously by our NFU insurance, I'm sure you'll approve of them Nikki. Hope your thumb feels better soon and the scan reveals no breaks. Here's a literal thumbs up to that. 👍😂 Oh and I do think the Antimatter blue is rather an appropriate name for the colour of Ortega. 💙

Good video! Just glad you are safe. (I know first hand how bad an accident can be.) I'm surprised you got another F150 Lightning. We all know the battery pack in an accident like that would have exploded and burned down an entire town as a result of the unstoppable fire. (Sorry, just channeling my inner oil company FUD.) I cannot wait for bluecruise 1.3 on my Mach-e.

FYI: in case there are ever downed power cables on your vehicle, DO NOT leave your vehicle! And do not touch any metal bits in case they are energized. Call emergency services if you can, and let them verify if the power line is dead If you absolutely have to leave your vehicle, jump out, try not to touch anything, and either shuffle or literally bunny hop away. This applies if there are downed power lines on the ground as well. Current can only flow if there is a difference in electrical potential, and the voltage in the ground from a downed power line radiates out in a circle from the power line. By bunny hopping, or shuffling away, you keep your feet at nearly the same potential, avoiding potential electrocution

Glad you’re ok after the crash. An observation on paint color: I previously owned a Ford Focus Electric in Blue Candy Metallic, similar to your old truck. I had a dark blue loaner Focus when my car was at the dealer for recall work. Anecdotally I had a lot more drivers pull in front of me or generally seem unaware that they were coming into the path of a car. DRLs reduce this somewhat, but do be aware that you could be less visible in the new rig

Oh, your opening scenes . I really miss open country like that! Very glad you're okay and things are coming together! Good insurance, while more pricy, can really pay off. I do wonder about EV write-off's across the market as a whole and what that will look like in a few more years. I went from a 2002 Camry XLE to the used 2017 Bolt Premium for only an extra $14/month difference. We'll see what that looks like in a few years when we come back to a BEV.

Glad you were OK! I've always hated driving my F-150 on icy roads because it has such a soft isolated feeling, with the cab isolated from the chassis, and I can never "feel" how icy the road really is.

Welcome Ortegas! To hear more of what was going on with you late truck was sobering and frightening to hear. I am more thankful than you might imagine that you can grace us with your presence. I am sorry for the loss of Adira Tal but glad she protected you. In terms of replacement, I might have argued for something more superior, with range no one can imagine in the 2020's and freaking carrying capacity, like my well loved Mitsubishi i-miev. ...but to each their own 😂😂! More seriously, sounds like you got a very good replacement. May both it and you be safe!!

Having to pay extra to keep using blue cruise? You already paid for it when you purchased the vehicle. Auto makers following the path of not allowing the customer to own the product they bought, everything’s a subscription. Inevitably will lead to a world where people will have to be far more selective about which products they use because not many will be to afford subscriptions for every product they would previously simply have purchased.

Hey Nikki, glad to see you are doing better and you got your replacement Ford F-150 Lightning. One of the things that has always driven me a bit batty is how Ford and the other major car manufacturers will make major and minor changes to vehicles year to year deleting some features that were really nice and handy to have.

A guy has built himself an offgrid home. He has the solar in place on the roof and was shopping for batteries to build his battery pack when he recalled all those commercials where Ford goes bragging how the Lightning can power a house. So, the guy looks into it and made these discoveries- 1 The Lightning battery pack is larger than the one he was going to build. 2 The Lighrning cost LESS than the battey pack he was going to build. SO, he simply bought a Lightning to power his offgrid home. !

Nikki first off I’m glad you’re OK I haven’t checked in with your website lately I’ve commented before I have to EV is now the first one I purchased in 2014 I still have that Nissan Leaf and I purchased a second Nissan Leaf in September 2023 which is a 2020 Nissan leaf. I had an event somewhat similar to what Niki described as the lead up to her accident in a 96 dodge neon. I was going downhill toward a curve, and the road was paved, but was also covered in ice. When the car lost traction, I couldn't steer, and I couldn't brake. The thing that I managed to do different than her though, to regain traction, was to shift into neutral. That allowed my tires to stop over-speeding on the ice and regain JUST enough traction that I was able to gently correct the slide. I shifted back into drive a bit too early and started to slide again, requiring me to drop back to neutral and regain control a second time, but I was able to prevent the car from leaving the road. That trick was possible thanks to experience in driving that car in poor conditions, as well as having an easy to shift transmission. Many modern vehicles, especially electric, are moving away from actual shit levers, and that will make that technique far more difficult, if not impossible in cars like Tesla. Yes, that car was a front wheel drive, yes the car was lighter, and yes, the underlying road surface was different, but I have used that same technique in all manor of car and truck to correct from spins in icy conditions on all manor of roads throughout the years. Could that technique have saved her truck? I don't know. What I do know is this move to buttons, knobs, or touchscreen shifters is making something like that, for experienced drivers who know how to do it, far more difficult, if not impossible. BRING BACK PROPER SHIFTERS!

So glad you're OK and even have a replacement. I feel your pain... we got sideswiped in our Lightning after only a week. In the shop for a month for some relatively minor scuffing. I thought maybe you could have titled a video about the accident "the grid strikes back!" I'm trying to get up the courage to modify the headlights for adaptive operation. Thanks for the intro video about ForScan! Would love to see some info on the steps needed to modify the headlight operation, but I know you're busy!

thanks for the info! after your first video about ForScan, I got set up and modified the number of turn signal clicks setting. I noticed that when you have a trailer attached, the number of clicks increases, too. Recently, I tried to go back in and tackle the headlights, but I was puzzled as to why the ability to view or modify settings wasn't there. Turns out when your 2 month extended license for ForScan expires, the software returns to "standard license," which doesn't permit modifications. Got that sorted out. I'm making detailed notes of the current settings before making the changes, and going to try to figure out how to backup the current configurations using ForScan. I'll be interested to see how oncoming drivers react to our high beams. thanks again. love your channel!

Any aftermarket parts that are not covered due to reaching the $1k insurance cap still belong to you, so you can remove them and put them in your new vehicle. When my vehicle was hit and totaled a couple years ago, I removed most of the undamaged aftermarket additions for this reason, with the damaged items being enough to reach that insurance cap.

Have to say, I like this color more ;) I've always had my cars all-risk insured even though it doesn't cover any aftermarket changes. Technically, I could, but then I would have to declare the value with the insurance and the cost would go up. And compared to surrounding countries, Insurance here isn't cheap. But I do now wonder, what is considered a small deductible around the world? The highest deductible my insurer even allows is 750 euro which I still consider small. I find it amazing seeing how much cars change between model years, because from a distance, you would think nothing really changed.
