OUR KIDS ONLY HAVE ONE WEEK'S WORTH OF CLOTHES | Kids capsule wardrobe! I'm sharing how we as a large family of 5 and minimalists have only one week's worth of clothing for our kids. We have an infant baby, a preschool child and a school aged kid. I show you what's in their closets, all the items of clothing they have as well as talk through why we do kids capsule wardrobes, the benefits if you're on a budget as how it's good for the environment. I hope that despite the fact that our kids only have one week's worth of clothes, you see the benefits of having a kids capsule wardrobe and that you find this mommy vlog motivation and inspiring! Can‘t imagine doing this. Our 10 month old boy goes thrue up to 5 outfits aday at the moment. And I totally love the change and see him in different things. And even if I do it like you, I would have to wash much more often.

Ask people not to buy your children clothes anymore. Simple. Ask for books.

We have a similar issues. We suggest people give books, puzzles, or other needed items if they want to gift something, but we usually end up with outfits. I like how Elle addresses it. In other areas of my life I ask myself if it is the item the best, favorite, necessary. If not, we part ways. That method came from Emily Ley.

Naomi Michielse or you can ask for the next size up so when they outgrow the other clothes you have the next set of clothes and ask for the season when you expect them to outgrow the clothes. And just stow it away until they are ready to fit into it

This is such an interesting idea to me. I was always baffled when I was younger and seeing my family have loads of clothes for their kids but not even get to use most of them before they grow out of that size. This is something I will definitely be implementing with my children, and I have already started applying it to my own wardrobe!

When my son was little (20 some years ago - yikes) he wanted only black clothing. It made for such easy laundry days. He also was apparently a minimalist at heart then because he was happy with two pairs of jeans, one pair of shorts and would have worn the same t-shirt all week. I did get him to agree to change his shirt daily though so he had at least six or seven. I know we did have more than seven pairs of underwear but that was my decision, not his. Now at 26 he owns five black t-shirts, one pair of jeans, one pair of shorts, two sweat pants and maybe a week's worth of underwear and socks. He can fit everything all his clothes into one load of laundry and one dresser drawer.

We do time capsules also and absolutely love it! I started doing it about 2 years ago for myself and 1 year now for the kids. I do it a bit different as I also have lounge clothes which I keep separate from their going out or school clothes. The lounge clothes is basically what they play with at home or they use for the park and that sort of thing and it maintains their going out clothes nicer and stain free for longer.

Another video I watched it suggested putting extra clothes in a box in garage and if you find you really want more clothes they are still there. Then get rid of them in a month or two if you dont use them. No risk that way if you are nervous

This is awesome! We do similar(now) but we have 10 outfits. I had to do some real down sizing as we buy majority of our kids clothes second hand and lots of times they are a complete clothing lot. Sometimes when we purchase those they are huge or we don't end up using or liking some stuff. Especially our first born, we had SO much but now we've down sized to 10 of everything which makes life so much easier!

*BRAVA!* I think you and everyone else who does this evens out those with the Keeping Up With The Joneses type of mindset. *Personally? 2 weeks' worth of clothing. I don't have kids, but I'm at the stage in life where I'm wanting to learn a lot before I might have a child, and I am not okay with having a crap ton of stuff. As the oldest sibling by almost a decade to my brother and sisters, aaand having moved sooo many times, I legit don't see the point of having more than 2 weeks' worth of clothing for every person in the house. I'm tired of my stuff because I use shirts, shorts, and yoga pants as my loungewear, pajamas, workout wear, and the shirts usually can be used for an outfit if I'm out. 1 week's worth of undies, socks (black set, white set by accident), 1 bra which I'm sad about, 3 sports bras, and a bunch of dusty shoes lol, 1 pair worn all the time.* Update: 2 bras 😂😂

Love how you have it organised, I’ll need to look into my boys chest of drawers, they share one and definitely have less joggers, jeans and long sleeves T-shirt’s. But I love that in England kids have uniforms for school, which makes it very simple. Also, after having 3 boys I’m now expecting a girl and I’m overwhelmed by the clothes you can get for a girl. I’m only used to simple T-shirt’s and trousers style and now I’m already lost thinking about the leggings, trousers, skirts, dresses tops etc 🙈

Elle, I have been watching you for a long time :) over the past 5/6 years I have been learning a lot about the environment, our food, how clothing is made how companies work, minimalism etc etc. So over the weekend I really dived into ordering some of our supplies for the house from small and ethical companies. I learned some things from Shelbizleee on her youtube channel. I also watch Fairly Local Vegan and all sorts of others. I am looking into some other companies called Eden, Dr. Bronners and Zevia. I recently gave up my long time addiction of Soda (Coca Cola) as i finally caught up with me health wise. So one day I found this Zevia Organic Tea and well I dont care much for the odd replacement sweetners but it is helping me through my journey at the moment. For when I want a little caffeine and something "sweet" . So I looked up their company and seems to be ok. I am able to buy a case which should last a really long time for me. I mostly just drink water now. Have you heard of these companies and what ae your thoughts?

This video was great! Very informative - thank you for sharing! Just an idea for a future video is to go over the quantities you would recommend for someone preparing for their first baby since now you have so much experience of what is needed and not. I struggled A LOT to know how many of each pieces to buy and in which size when I was first buying things for my baby. I didn't register for clothes as I managed to buy everything in the summer sale. Like you, I want to keep the quantities at a minimum, but it is hard to know what these numbers are when doing it for the first time, especially for newborns considering the blowouts and that you don't know what size your baby will be born. I looked it up online, but people give very different recommendations.

I wish but unfortunately that wouldn't work with my grandkids, lol. Great idea for small kids but Elle when they get bigger I don't think it will work. But one great thing about that is you can teach them to do their own laundry and what you're teaching them now also teaches them the value of clothes and when they become adults and clothing can be brought back to a minimal they will probably go back to minimalizing their wardrobes. Tyfs God bless you

This is so fascinating! Where I live in Melbourne, Australia, I can't see this ever being possible, so it's amazing to see how you make it work! We get quite extreme temperatures (can get up to the high 40s in summer and as low as 0 in winter on a bad day [I know that's probably not very cold for you!]) and we often get four seasons in one day (Melbourne is known for it's unpredictability). So we need a lot of in-between pieces and items that can work for the extremes but probably wouldn't be much use on the average day! That said, I'm sure there are some people who have found a way to make it work...I'm just not one of them!
@jjgoldenpro
@jjgoldenpro 4 года назад
She lives in canada. If that's celcius we get alot colder than that. 35 in the summer at least and down to -30 in the winter, sometimes more extreme than that.
@eb663
@eb663 4 года назад
I’m aware, that’s why I said it wouldn’t seem very cold for her. My point was more that our weather often fluctuates a lot even during the day, so we can’t necessarily wear shorts/jeans and a t-shirt and be ok - we need lots of in between pieces. I can see many of these clothes working for 35 degrees - not for 50. I wasn’t criticizing, just saying I found this interesting as a person who lives in a climate where this would never work. Maybe in my attempt to be succinct I sacrificed clarity. In Canada, the extremes are on the cold end of the spectrum, whereas in Australia, the extremes are on the hot end of the spectrum. When you’re dealing with cold weather, you can often wear what you already have, at least in part, and keep warm with layering. I assume that would make it easier to minimize the amount you own, because a long sleeve shirt can be worn whether it is 0 or -30; same with jumpers (sweaters) etc. In extremely hot weather, we can’t always wear what we would normally wear on an average summer day. I can tell you right now my standard outfit on a 30 degree day would be unbearable when it’s 48. We need to own additional items to account for this. Also, because our weather fluctuates throughout the day, we can’t just throw on a winter jumper in the morning and take it off when it warms up; we need light, in-between clothing that can work for constantly changes between hot, cold, warm and cool. The clothes she has for her kids wouldn’t work for a child year-round in Melbourne, or even most of Australia. That’s why I find it so fascinating.

My twins are such wet their diapers so heavy I need two weeks worth to get through a week this inspires me because my brain hates clutter. My ASD kids need a lot of toys and it drives me bonkers but it brings them peace so I deal with it. I am minimizing all of my stuff and it feels great.

I Love that!! Its so simple yet I haven't thought of that 😂 although I have to say my kids ruin their clothes more than once a day.. they sneak into the bathroom and make a big mess and get all wet, or get food ALL over them, or we have to be somewhere in the afternoon and my son stained his clothes in kindergarten already so he'll wear a new aloutfot in the afternoon. What I'm trying to say here, my weeks worth of clothing would probably be 10 -12 outfits 😅 (my kids are 3 and 1 by the way)

I guess we do this but I never thought of it as a "weeks worth" and not really a minimalist . However, my girls are 3 and 2, and we keep 4 pairs of jeans, 4 non jean pants(leggings, etc), 4 sweaters, 4 longsleeve, 3 pair jammies 3 casual dresses, 2 church dresses. My girls are more independent because they're no wrong answers any top with any bottom, or a dress. Our 6m son has more but not tons. I like it this way and we just do a load a day and it keeps it available and under control.

I was very poor growing up and did not have many clothes....in fact, I was bullied because I had only one pair of pants that I could fit into and when I finally got a new pair people took note of it. That being said....PLEASE let your boys know that you choose to do this, that it is not a financial situation and that your family is ok financially. Also, because I had very little growing up, I tend to go overboard as an adult, and over purchase....just something to think about. You don't want your children to feel like they are missing out by not having clothing that they enjoy. I hope that makes sense.

I actually like this idea. I am currently looking at piles and piles of laundry and I am so over it. I do realize my kids do not wear all of their clothes. (I have 3 boys) 4,2, and 10 months so clothes in my house is a huge over load. The thing with mine, they get dirty quick or food on their shirts or poop blow outs with the younger two.

Have you ever thought/considered cloth diapers? It saves the environment and money. Just a thought. Thank you for sharing their capsule wardrobe. I enjoy your video's a ton! :)

Haha I actually thought that I have too much clothes for my baby daughter. And it's even less than you have for yours :P (we do cloth diapering, so we do laundry twice a week)

As they get older around 11/12, do you plan on letting them have more than 6/7 shirts at a time? Just curious, since at that age kids at school can be not nice about joking and teasing kids for wearing the same thing over and over? I completely understand the pants, because I don’t own more than 5 pairs of jeans myself and I’m 24. I just wonder because I have younger siblings in elementary school. Not that other kids opinions matter, and I hope that didn’t come off as a rude question. I don’t mean for it to be at all, I’m just curious on the topic.

I’ve never seen kids tease over clothes. My boys rewear their clothes constantly. Because honestly kids don’t notice that type of thing unless their literally wearing the same one outfit every single day.

When I was in high school I literally owned two pairs of pants and 3 shirts (super poor) and I was never bullied for my clothing.

@@kbthor8 my granddaughter had a really close friend she went to school with was tormented by kids in school over her clothes along with some other things and she took her own life. Some kids will find anything to make fun of others for. Believe me, not all kids are raised properly...

You would be surprised how little people notice. One you tuber wore the same shirt all week and no one noticed. One reporter wore the same dress ever day for one year and few people noticed.

I got teased SO BAD when I rewore things too much but I couldn’t help it because we couldn’t afford it. I wish it would have been an option for me. I understand the thought process but I personally would NEVER do that for my littles.

Hi I'm from Canada too I've been doing this for a while for my kids " not so much for myself but I find it difficult when people gift clothing because they tend to bring large amounts and they thinking my 7 day rule is ridiculous my kids grandma always sends them home with new cloths and it gets overwhelming because I don't want to be rude but I use cloth diapers as well so I try to keep laundry miniamal as Christmas comes closer I want to find a way to just say no clothing gifts without upsetting anyone but I think in just gunna have to accept that people will thing in a controll freak as I already have rules about toys and stuff

i could maybe do 10 days worth to give more options and to give more buffer between laundry days. It would be too much for me to do that much laundry on a weekly basis.

I grew up (and still live) very minimalist. I had 4 pants, 6 shirts, a sweater, a coat, and 2 pairs of shoes. School and pressure to fit in was very difficult for me. We didn't wear uniforms and everyone knew what I had and what I didn't. How do you plan to navigate your children through it as they get older? My child is almost 2, and I keep her closet small as well. Just looking for tips.

Not sure if it’s on purpose ... but I definitely love the “simplicity” to the shirts. Not a bunch of designs . I have a 6 year old boy and 7 year old girl, and it’s so hard to make the wardrobe smaller and keeping it simple.

I thought to have less laundry when they would grow older but it didn't work. Firstly, the clothes got bigger, secondly, around 10 years old, there came the teen sweat smell 😜. Still shirts and sweaters are getting no more than one day of wear out of them. Jeans they can do longer with!

I also live in Canada and baby will be 3minths approx July. I have sooo many clothes from friends but would like to just have 5 dresses/bloomers for summer... maybe tights too. I’m hoping to CD so need roomy options. Do you just stick w one brand. One thing I noticed was so much variation in sizes from brand to brand I feel like I’d be on ten rotations through a seasob

How do you like the Copper Pearl bibs for Brighton? I have a 4 month old baby girl and so many of the bibs I have for her seem to “ride up” and bunch around her mouth and face, which I don’t like. Do you recommend the Copper Pearl bibs? They seem to have less fabric (from what I can tell)...I’m thinking about giving them a try!
