I have a rather strong SimradRobertson electro hydraulic autopilot (ram). It is rated for 500 kg push/pull. Testing your ram at 1000 kg could be too much for the gaskets and the valve. The valve is like a hydraulic clutch, if that valve fails it will mimic the error you see. A standard electro mechanic 'ram' (like Raymarine) gives in the region 300 kg push/pull, and are used for sailing boats up to around 16 tons. My 'ram'' as installed now, is for sailing boats up to region of 25 tons with a ruther arm of 300 mm. And of course, things will wear out, the first to go is normally the electric motor (brushes, commutator, bearings). Whish you all the best.
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 4 месяца назад
Thanks for that useful info. I guess the rating will always err on the side of caution but honestly, I had no idea what kind of forces are being applied while underway. This is a good ball-park 👍👍

We feel your pain! We had a similar issue with our steering during our rounding of the UK last summer, where any swell on either quarter would laterally move the rudder post causing an awful grinding noise and an unbelievably heavy helm. Really disconcerting to hear when you’re on a night watch! I worried about it constantly not knowing what the issue was. We too suspected the rudder bearings and we were right. Previous owner had used some questionable grub screws and Sikaflex to hold our ‘god’ pin in place, meaning it had come out. The entire bearing assembly had sunk down and the only thing holding the rudder in place was a pinch on the bottom bearing given the slight angle this had caused. I hope you get sorted soon and if your relief is half of what we felt once we fixed ours, we will hear your screams of joy from Blighty! Thank you for your content.
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 4 месяца назад
Thanks for your story and posting your experience. The relief isn't just from getting it fixed, there was huge relief from when we simply identified the problem! We've had a heavy helm for a while so it's great to finally get to the bottom of the cause. Fair winds to you and Blighty!

Can't quite see if you have a rudder tube with the stock inside, with the top end of the tube above the waterline. If so, you can drop the rudder (with care, lines rigged to stop it falling etc, and preferably in shallow water (in case you actually do lose grip on it). Mind you, if it's the lower rudder bearing that's the problem (and I'd say it's a racing certainty) then you will almost certainly need to haul out.

Long time - no speaky. Have you got an emergency tiller that fits on the rudder post directly? If so disconnect the wheel steering system completely and operate with the tiller - that will speak to where the excess resistance is coming from. You could do that before you haul out. Although it is probably all fixed now.😉 Good luck.👍
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 4 месяца назад
Thank you for pointing this out, Norman, because we forgot to include that in this episode! That was indeed the nail in the coffin and confirmed our suspicions. I think because we didn't actually record that test I just forgot to include it. I'll make a point of including it in a voice over.

Not sure if you caught last week's podcast about sourcing gear for the boat in remote places. That's the biggest headache, that and visas. Otherwise, can't complain 😁
@SailingYachtSaltyLass
@SailingYachtSaltyLass 4 месяца назад
Definitely a sailor's nightmare, but pulling the whole system for an overhaul and update is the wisest option. On our type of boat, stiff steering is usually a swollen rudder bearing and many people replace them as soon as they can. It will be interesting to see if the cause is a bad commutator, leaky seal on the internal piston of the ram or a bearing issue.

@followtheboat
@followtheboat 4 месяца назад
Losing the steering is probably second to hitting a submerged object in terms of my fears while underway. Illness is up there, of course. Glad you managed to get a tow, I know a few sailors who were less fortunate. There's a cat here that sailed over 600 miles after hitting a tree, putting a hole in its transom and taking out a rudder. When you see the damage it's a miracle they actually made it that far.

We had an issue once with the rudder BEARINGS, which are/were under the waterline. The aluminium housing was oxidized which 'clamped' the rudderstock. It became harder and harder to move the rudder. replaced the rudderbearings with needlebearings. Kind of sounds like your bearings are also 'gone' 😞

Thanks for the video and hope it all works out for you. Indonesia can be tough. Not sure why you were so surprised by the wind, other than just being surprised at a bit of bad luck. These winds are fairly regular each season. That Southeasterly monsoon will blow everyday until about November. In November it starts to switch back and forth between SE and NW then in December it's steady as she goes from the NW. I am assuming you filmed that in November or around there. If that's the case then any plan to sail up the Java sea to the NW will be no good and you will have to wait a good number of months for that.
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 4 месяца назад
I think you may have misunderstood about the wind (we know all about the trades, two distinct seasons with transitionals in between). Jamie was talking about the local wind, which had promised an easy day sail to Medana Bay. At this point of filming we were bang in the middle of the SE Trades... Cheets! Liz 🌬️⛵

I am astounded. Your boat is not equipped with an emergency tiller? I'm not a sailor, but I thought all boats of any size had something like this in case the linkage failed. Of course, you would not sail anywhere without a backup for critical parts, if possible.

We do have an emergency tiller but I forgot to mention that test in this episode because I didn't record any footage of us using it 🤦 I'll talk about it more in the next installment but it didn't make any difference anyway. What it did do was highlight the eventual problem!
