Do you also give the trees a good hug too?? 😉 Hugs could make the trees happier 😄😃!! (sorry, when I heard that 'line,', I giggled and had to reply) 🤣 Keep up the good work and the cheerfulness is so enjoyable!!

So great to see you drive the old A and A railroad bed. This is on what we always called the "west hill". I stopped at my camp today to put new batteries in my trail cameras. I only completed 2 out of 5 as the crust kept breaking and I'm beginning to realize that I'm closer to 70 than I am to 60. 🙁🤠

Avoiding poison Ivy, poison oak, is always a smart thing. The oils can get you from contact with things after the fact also. Cool vid, Thanks. Love the syrup also.

Be careful of the poison ivy. Years ago I lived in an area with heavy poison ivy and after being exposed to it for 4 years with no problem I was convinced I was immune. On year 5 it hammered me. Thanks for taking us along with you when you go to the forest. Stay safe out there!
@MapleFarmer

I never know if I am immune or not but I am always worried about potentially breathing it in 😱
@xfiles4792
@xfiles4792 2 года назад
@@MapleFarmer My understanding from back in the day was that the poison ivy plant has an oil that people react to. Since it's an oil in the plant there is no worry about breathing it unless you are burning the vines. Milk goats will eat poison ivy and get the oil all over their hair. People milking the goats often brush up against the fur and get the oil on their arms and have a reaction. Anyway the idea was to wash the oil off of you as soon as possible. It's old rule of thumb stuff, but I hope it helps you out.

Guessing the poison ivy is less potent when it is not actively growing. Also, cold weather, your pores are more closed. I used to get it bad, but after sawmilling for many years, I think I've gained some immunity to it. (I hope anyway). When I encounter it now, I might get a small spot of rash, but it doesn't spread.

Should try 8mill latex gloves. Thick enough to reuse and your hands stay dry and the latex doesn’t breath so keeps your hands warm. We’ve got about 2500 taps in central New Brunswick, tapping in this weekend!

Curious - do you have anything like crop insurance for the sugar maples? I’d truly hate to think that any insect (here around Chicago, we lost hundreds of thousands of ash trees to an invasive insect from China, the emerald ash borer) might decimate the sugar maples here in North America.

@ryanbrowne4374
@ryanbrowne4374 2 года назад
False. The sugar content of raw sap is minimal and doesn't really effect the freezing point. Finished syrup does not freeze until about -20f or so.

This might be a dumb question, but if you are going right back and tapping the same lune,line, don't you tap as you put drops on, save a step?

Some people do it that way but since we have a small number of employees it is easier for us to put the drops on ahead of time and then go back to tap right before the sap runs!

How many years have been tapping the trees in your oldest woods? and do you have a problem with the smaller trees in your oldest woods being tapped out (meaning you have tapped around the tree and there is no more room for a new tap hole)?
@MapleFarmer
@MapleFarmer 2 года назад
Our oldest woods has been tapped for just about 100 years and we don't have a problem with them being tapped out. We take pride in keeping our trees healthy that is why we pull the spouts immediately after season!
@billherrick3569
@billherrick3569 2 года назад
@@MapleFarmer Thank you for your quick response. So after 100 years of tapping the same tree you must hit old healed over tap holes that are not visible from time to time. I guess the old healed over tap holes don't impede the sap flow much. Interesting.

Nikki, was it you who invented this style with a typical "farmer hat" and then a toque over top of that ? . I can't recall seeing anyone else do that and am sure you have reasons around wearing it ... or is it the fact that we farmers wear "many hats" around the farm LOL.
