Yesterday royals, politicians and military leaders began two days of events to mark the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings, also known as D-day. Christine admits she was moved to tears listening to the veterans talking about their experiences and thinks it’s important we continue to remember. Plus, as it’s revealed that many young people don’t know what the D-Day landings were, we’re asking if today’s youth would answer the call to fight for King and Country similarly. Denise is sceptical whilst Kelly thinks that many young people could benefit from the discipline and ambition the military instils.

We as a British nation should keep our British history ALIVE! God love those servicemen and service women. Each generation should be educated as to what they went through and what they are continuing to do so. It is honourable to light the lanterns, each year, to commemorate and remember our elderly. They sacrificed so much, so that we could live in peace. So let's remember this, going forward.

My dad turned 18 in August 1939. He served in the RAMC. He never spoke about what he experienced. Unfortunately he passed away when I was 16 in 1986. I wish I could have asked him questions when I was a kid.

We were taught about Anzac day, our war vets dead and alive are commemorated here in Australia, anzac day is a big deal , remembrance day and d day are all a big part of our lives. I don't know if our schools still teach it I hope they do .

I'm 69 and left school in 1971 and we weren't taught any modern history at all. The nearest we got was the Industrial Revolution and the things I now know about both our wars is what I've either read or seen on TV. It should definitely be taught in schools, it's a vital, if not the most important, part of our history.
@Viconius
@Viconius 3 месяца назад
It must have been a regional issue. I left HS in 1980 with very Left/Hippy leaning teachers and we hit this aspect very hard, just not the Soviet's efforts. Either way, I agree, this should be taught in schools before things like CRT or DEI. Without this kind of knowledge, you have no context of the US and will believe anything that's thrown at you as a kid.

Sure, in a utopian world this would be a possibility. But humans just aren't able to agree to this, at least not yet. Until then, we need to learn the history.

@@lizbignell7813 yet VJ which marks the official end of ww2 never gets anywhere enough coverage or recognition , people forget about the thousands of fepows under the Japanese imperial army forced into slavery building the death railway, hellfire pass and surviving allied bombings in hellships. I think for once next year is more important then VE Day which does not include those in the Pacific war
@lizbignell7813
@lizbignell7813 3 месяца назад
I agree that VJ Day needs to be commemorated as well. My mother was in the WAAF, and when the men who survived that awful conflict were brought home she took a troop of girls to carry the men’s bags from the railway station because they were too weak to do it themselves.
