Here, how about this for an idea: a video that focuses on Progressive Rock Singles. I know for some people that may seem an incongruous coalition but often a band would release a 7" single and 1 or both tracks never appeared on an album and the tracks were really good. These discs come instantly to mind. Ambrose Slade: Genesis / Roach Daddy Cat Food / Groon Jethro Tull: A Song For Jeffrey / One For John Gee ELP: Fanfare For The Common Man / Brain Salad Surgery Atomic Rooster: Tomorrow Night / Playing The Game Egg: Seven Is A Jolly Good Time / You Are All Princes Curved Air: It Happened Today / When You Blow Yourself Up The Family: Scene Through The Eye Of A Lens / Gypsy Woman The Family: 2nd Generation Woman / Hometown The Family: Today / Song For Lots The Family: Strange Band / The Weaver’s Answer The Family: In My Own Time / Seasons Pink Floyd: Point Me At The Sky / Careful With That Axe, Eugene VDGG: People You Were Going To / Firebrand VDGG: Theme One / W MMEB: I Who Have Nothing / Mann In A Jam Genesis: I Know What I Like / Twilight Alehouse Gryphon: Glastonbury Carol / Crossing The Styles Both Van Der Graaf singles are excellent and, of all the progressive groups, The Family were the one who openly embraced the 7" single as a format to promote their group. I suspect there are umpteen I've forgotten or not inclouded through ignorance but you can see where I'm at with this list. W, Twilight Alehouse, When You Blow Yourself Up...tracks that merit our attention (in my biased opinion) which are lost because they never appeared on an album.

First: I am not aware of any other father-and-daughter teams who present music appreciation videos on You Tube. Yours is especially entertaining. I think 2 or more people are required to present such videos unless you're larger than life character who can hold a talk together on his or her own - Scot Lade comes to mind here! Second: since our own group commenced operations in 1997, I regarded drums as merely there to keep a beat, stay in the background and behave themselves while all the real instruments play the melodies and harmonies. Even today, I find it difficult to abandon this attitude (the internet now threatens to collapse as a gigantic chorus of drummers scream, yell and hurl abuse at me from Alaska to Australia). Ah but then (in 2002) I heard Colosseum and Ginger Baker's Airforce. My relationship to percussion changed, albeit only slightly. This is because I realised I found what Jon Hiseman and Ginger Baker did on their drum kits actually interested me. This had never happened previously - a provokative discovery. Third: thank you both for giving Colosseum and - better yet - Colosseum 2 the recognition they deserve. Yours is one of the only prog rock channels I've seen that award Colosseum the credit they merit. Being a keyboard and sax player, I'm biased, of course!

Excellent choices. I saw Portnoy with DT on the Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence tour in Vicar St in 2002!! And.....I saw Carl Palmer at a drum clinic (yes I'm a drummer /percussionist too) in a hotel in Dundalk of all places!! A guy from a local music shop used to get drummers over for clinics! Amazing to see and hear his stories, and watch his technique. Saw Bill Bruford at a clinic in Trinity College also. Got his autograph!! Nice man. Of course saw Neil Peart when Rush came that one time! And Alan White with Yes when they played Dublin too.

Another great video as usual Tara & Dermot thanks. I had a few of your picks in my 10, but I had a lot more of the jazz drummers in there. I always realise later that I've totally missed someone who shoulda been there-and I realised that last night in relation to drummers. I was at a 'Giant Sand' gig in Newcastle, and they were reduced from a three piece to a two piece as the bass player had missed flights/connections etc for this, the first gig of their current British tour. Anyway, as soon as I seen the drummer-I knew it wasn't going to matter- it was the great Tommy Larkins, who had played with Giant Sand way back, but for the last 30 or more years has been Jonathan Richman's drummer, who I've seen live on four great occasions. Tommy is brilliant. Jonathan Richman and Howe Gelb (GS frontman) are both improvisors and innovators. I doubt very much they'd have such a thing as a set list-so to play with them, and particularly with Gelb's complex structures and timings, you have to be good. But-in addition-to provide the only other musical accompaniment to the lead/rhythm guitar, in big venues with a large audience, is altogether on another level. He was superb last night. If you get chance-look this guy up. Tommy Larkins definitely shoulda been in my top 10

Off the top of my head and at the moment, my favorite drummers that come to mind, based on their, stylistic playing choices, technical skill, and how much they influenced my own playing. (I'm a drummer) I'm not going to worry about if they were "rock" drummers or not, and I'm not ranking them, it's just whom ever came to mind first. I'll add band names and one recommended album: Buddy Rich Carl Palmer (ELP - Brain Salad Surgery) Pierre van der Linden (Focus - Moving Waves) Bill Bruford (King Crimson - Starless And Bible Black) Lenny White (Return To Forever - No Mystery) Narada Michael Walden (Mahavishnu Orchestra - Visions Of The Emerald Beyond) Billy Cobham (Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds Of Fire) Keith Moon (The Who - Quadrophenia) John Bonham (Led Zeppelin - IV) Mark Zonder (Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry)

I agree with Tara's pick and the Mahaishnu record (over Birds of Fire which many pick instead). Although my favorite actually is The Lost Trident Sessions. But Billy's a master. I saw him live twice. Here we go again...proof I really do need to go out more. Instrumental Animals The Who: The Ox. The Who: Dogs, Part 2. Curtis Knight & The Squires: Hornets Nest. Zoot Money & The Big Roll Band: The Cat. Black Sabbath: Rat Salad. The Graham Bond Organisation: Camels & Elephants. The Graham Bond Organisation: Waltz For A Pig. Episode Six: Jackdaw. Cream: Cat Squirrel. Cream: Toad. Curved Air: Cheetah. Camel: Flight Of The Snow Goose. Genesis: What Gorilla? Manfred Mann’s Earth Band: Sloth. Jethro Tull: Cat Squirrel. Jethro Tull: Serenade To A Cuckoo. Jethro Tull: The Pine Marten. The Bluesbreakers: Rubber Duck. The Bluesbreakers: Blue Fox. Green Bullfrog: Green Bullfrog. Cats Squirrel by Cream barelky qualifies as an instrumental because Jack Bruce interrupts proceedings with his 'alright, alright, alright' nonsense and in Jackdaw by Episode Six, Ian Gillan does whisper 'jackdaw' now and then. Green Bullfrog, if anyone is interesed (or even cares) is a 'band' put together by Derek Lawrnece in 1971 to release an album. It features Jon Lord, Ritchie Blackmore, Albert Lee, Jim Sullivan and Ian Paice plus other famous people whose names I've forgotten. Ye gods, I really do need to return to my work. This definitely suggests I have to much free time on my hands. Anyway, if anyone else wants to add to this list, feel free to do so.

For me it's not about technicality or virtuosity. It's about who brought something interesting to the table. I'll second your votes for Brann Dailor and Steve Gadd (some of stuff he did with Paul Simon is beautiful ie. 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover and Late In The Evening). A few favourites that you didn't mention who I love listening to and add something to their band's sound (in no particular order) Neil Peart (easily my favourite. Just so many memorable drum parts) Bill Ward (Just compare what Bill brought to the band compared to the neanderthal who played drums on their farewell tour) Stuart Copeland (easily the most interesting thing about The Police). Barrie Barlow of Jethro Tull (just criminally underrated) Mark Brezicki of Big Country Tomas Haake of Meshuggah Martin Lopez of Opeth Brian Downey of Thin Lizzy Jeff Porcaro of Toto I'm guessing like myself that you've endured a few drum solos in your time Dermot. Were there any among them that you enjoyed? Cozy Powell's were particularly long and boring. God they were boring 😴
@SpinninProg
@SpinninProg 3 месяца назад
Great list Terry. All worthy to be there and a few good left field choices. It's nice to see Bill Ward getting some love. Yes.... Drum solos were a thing that as a teenager, I thought were brilliant. Today, I'd go to the bar. The best was a really short stinging one from Carl Palmer... The worst ... I seem to remember Bill Bruford arsing around with a Simmons kit and it was more about the electric sounds than any technical aspect to his playing. 😁

@@SpinninProg got to admit, much like yourself I've never been wowed by Bill Bruford. He's just there while Wakeman, Howe, and Squire are doing the interesting stuff. I've also got to admit that i would have loved to hear what you said about Phil Collins. I've never forgiven him for the shambolic performance at Live Aid with Led Zeppelin. Still I would like to suggest a few, not sure these are Prog (still trying to figure that out…). Neil Peart of Rush. The precision that he plays with is amazing (see Rush 2112, side 1) Lars Ulrich of Metallica. He plays the drums as another instrument in the band, not just the concert floor (see Metallica Nothing Else Matters). Jukka Nevalainen of Nightwish. His speed and energy is astounding. He goes from soft to bring the house down in a flash (see Nightwish Over the Hills and Far Away). Senior moments…right there with ya.

I like Phil with Brand X but OK, Tony Williams instead.

The importance of any list is that Narada Michael Walden is included, he is so often forgotten. He’s a true drum-genius! … and, Billy should of course also be in any list ✌🏻😎

Question: How many drummers does it take to change a light bulb? Answer: 21 - one to change the lightbulb while the other 20 talk about how Steve Gadd would do it! 🤔

Nice one you two!! I had the good fortune of meeting Cozy Powell on the Slide It In tour in California, he was a really nice guy too (which counts in my book!). Powerhouse: Mickey Dee, in Motorhead he was non-stop for 90 min a night. A few, non-superstars, that I saw live that left a real impression were: Joey Kramer of Aerosmith, Barrymore Barlow of Jethro Tull, Gary O'Toole from the Steve Hackett Band, Ted McKenna from Rory Gallagher & Band of Friends, and Clive Burr of Iron Maiden. Sadley, many of these greats are now gone. Cheers from Central California!

Great choices. I'm surprised Ted McKenna didn't get on Tara's list because of her fixation with The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Brilliant picks. 👍

What…no Neil Peart?? or how about Stewart Copeland. Overall, I have to go with Tara‘s list. I’ll take Bonzo and Ian Paice over Keith Moon. I could have more appreciation for Ginger Baker if his commentary hadn’t been so vicious in “Beware of Mr. Baker.” The things he said about Bonham??
