The most acclaimed motion picture of 1985 stars Robert Redford and Meryl Streep in one of the screen's great epic romances. Directed by Oscar® winner Sydney Pollack, Out of Africa is the fascinating true story of Karen Blixen, a strong-willed woman who, with her philandering husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer), runs a coffee plantation in Kenya, circa 1914. To her astonishment, she soon discovers herself falling in love with the land, its people and a mysterious white hunter (Redford). The masterfully crafted, breathtakingly produced story of love and loss earned Oscars® for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay (based on material from another medium), Cinematography, Original Score, Art Direction (Set Decoration) and Sound.

Out of Africa, Chariots of Fire, and Gandhi were three of the 80's finest films. They encapsulate a time that's long gone and now even the 80's has an aura of romantic distance.

About four years ago we visited Karen Blixen's house in Denmark. There you can see the room where she did her writing, the gifts given to her by her staff in Kenya, and her grave. She is buried in the garden of her house.

Surprisingly enough, a week or so ago my Chinese wife asked me to check out this movie from our local library as I go there a lot. Last night, we watched it together and this morning we discussed it in some detail. It seems she watched it in China many years ago. She told me that the movie is based on the life of an actual lady from Denmark, Karen Blixen. I Googled her this morning and read a little about her. I'd like to learn more. As for the movie, the scenery was so beautiful. I saw this morning that the movie won an Academy Award for best cinematography. That's not surprising. I noticed that the title says that Robert Redford and Meryl Streep owned a coffee plantation in Kenya. Did the character portrayed by Redford actually have an ownership interest in the plantation? The best to you.

I have alwayyys loooved this movie, watched it in 1985 when I was heartbroken because of a love I could not live. Meryl Streep has been my favourite actress ever since, also being proud of "Bror" Klaus-Maria Brandauer, as my countryman. The bitter-sweet love between Karen and Denys is hopeless as they are so different; yet, one hopes against all odds. Such a brave woman. Only one hour before the wedding and no wedding ring, and she is forced to think of the man who she has just met and who entrusted her with his ivory. This is fate. He makes her happy and desperate beyond all imagination. I will always charish this movie, its profound questions of love, passion and life.

Susanne ... I think Karen Blixen's [Isak Dinesen] "Out of Africa" is one of the great feminist stories of all time, and one of the greatest true stories of the 20th century ... Karen von Blixen is able to survive all types of adversity: life in Africa in the early 20th Century, a philandering husband who gives her syphilis, a desire to still want an enduring nonmarital relationship with Denys Finch only to have his life suddenly snatched away from her, yet somehow remaining stoically able to go on with her life is truly remarkable ... who in the right mind could think that Finch-Hatton was a normal name lol, he was far more aristocratic than Karen was, with aristocratic lineage stretching back to 15th century. The Honorable Denys George Finch-Hatton was the second son of Henry Stormont Finch-Hatton, 13th Earl of Winchilsea, he was actually the great'''' nephew of Jane Austen through her rich brother Edward Austen Knight. While the 13th Earl was the third son of 10th Earl of Winchilsea, famous for his duel with Duke of Wellington. Denys's brother was 14th Earl of Winchilsea, he had married the wealthiest American heiress of the season, her grandfather Drexel founded a little company called J.P Morgan with J.P Morgan, Denys's niece married the eldest son of one of the wealthiest American heiress that came from prominent American old money who invented gin production, while Denys's nephew married daughter of the richest Vanderbilt heiress worth almost 1 billion today (back then she would be one of the richest person in the world) The family had quite an interesting relations to black history: 1. Finch-Hatton, the Hatton name came from the cousin and heir of the famous Sir Christopher Hatton, Lord Chancellor to Queen Elizabeth I, long story short the hatton descendant was 1st Viscount Hatton, when the gunpowder in the castle exploded, his black slave/servant went in the rubble to save him and his children, later he was freed and given generous pension and some land, one of the children saved was the only one with offspring, Anne Hatton, she married Daniel Finch Earl of Winchilsea, her younger Finch son inherited the Hatton properties and assumed the name Finch-Hatton, then his line inherited the Earl of Winchilsea title. 2. Lady Elizabeth Murray, mother of George Finch-Hatton, 10th Earl of Winchilsea, was actually the great niece of 1st Earl of Mansfield and cousin to half black Dido Belle, Lord Mansfield made a landmark judgment regarding the slave trade, and seen as the first step towards abolitionist. There was a famous painting of her and her half black cousin. extra: Denys was related to a little bit of Danish history, Lady Elizabeth Murray's mother was a German Saxon Imperial Countess, granddaughter of the Lord Chancellor of Saxony, her first husband died young and left her his three Danish estates (they had no children), then she remarried to Murray and sold the three Danish estate after her marriage (because her future was set on England, but she died young in Vienna)

Barkley is British upper class. He studied at Oxford Univeristy. It was customary to invite the girl you admired to a ball/dance. The girl would dress up ("a new silk dress") and wear a special perfume. Karen's perfume reminds him of the perfume of a girl in Oxford whom he took to the dance. He is being melancholy about it. Obviously, he is homesick and nostalgic. There is a special bond between Barkley and Karen: a deep friendship develops.
