What a fun video! It certainly was rather busy, and it is interesting to see the different levels of attention by the boats. One minor note: 4:03 You mention right of way. Technically there is no right of way except for inland water ways, and then only if a vessel is heading down river. There are however stand on and give way vessels. In this case (Rule 18) the tugs are the stand on vessels since they are "limited in their ability to maneuver." The only higher priority would be a vessel not under command. Thanks for a fun video!

Cape Ann Towing was started by Capt. Ellis , he retired and sold the company to Capt. Cory. I had the privilege to crew with Capt Ellis on a rear tug .They really are amazing captains with ice water running through their veins . Total respect for their skills .

I was there at the start of cape ann towing, spent many hours working on those boats with ellis and Courtney. They started out with gas engines then went to diesel and got more power and running gear as the boats they were towing got larger. The only thing that didn't get larger is the newriver. They always did a great job

Kind of reminds me of my last underway bridge watch. Conning a Belknap class cruiser. 549 feet long, 54 feet wide, 29 feet deep, about 8300 tons. One shaft stopped and locked due to an engineering room casualty. Coming in to San Diego in the Pt Loma channel. Showing day shapes indicating "Restricted in ability to maneuver." Meaning, we had the right-of-way over everything that could maneuver, motorboat, sailboat, swimmers, etc. Carrying anywhere from 5 to 20 degrees rudder just to go straight in the channel depending on the winds and swells. Unfortunately it was a Thursday afternoon and we were coming in as the beer boat crowd was coming out. Coast Guard and Harbor Police trying to keep the little ones out of the channel and out of the way. Some very expensive lessons to skippers who thought that tacking meant they had the right of way.

They always have a tug/tow boat at the stern for larger vessels to prevent the stern from swinging too far wide. The lead boat pulls and starts the turn, the aft boat then pulls in the opposite direction. Hats off to the crews of those tugs/tows very making it look so simple.

I had worked on the New River and watch the tugboats do their stuff with the large Yachts going into yard and out to sea. At the turnaround of the part called Florida Peninsula and a new River is most amazing watching the tugs do their stuff. The captains on the Tugs do have some help with the computer systems however do have the ability to override and adjust. And also you get the crazy Critters out there that think they have the right away just because

My father and brother in law worked on the water doing similar work and the knowledge one has to have, like these tug boat captains, gives them a pride that allows them to do work such as this. Most people who own yachts like this wouldn’t know the bow from the stern or how to tie the line that holds it to the deck, so they need the captains who get these boats from point A to point B. I think it gives them a sense of pride that’s worth more than the biggest ship out there.

I am a local ft Lauderdale captain and traverse that river quite often. In many cases those tug boat captains will actually stand down temporarily to allow for a less crowded passage. They do have right of way however the traffic jam is due to bridge scuedules and many times those captains do not monitor channel 9 which is the required channel for that river.
