Out of Spec On The Alcan! Driving The Entire Alaska Highway In Our Winnebago Revel - Part 1

I just come across your channel, great ride along beautiful country :) I am planning a 6 week trip next year just to do every road in the Yukon, this year September I'm just going as far as Sign Corner so just two weeks this year, hope to have some great videos to share in September :) looking forward to seeing more of your trips.

I never tire of watching the dogs enjoy their vacation time.

I love my dogs so much that I have them in crash tested Gunner kennels that are tied down. A crash in that van, at that speed, won't be good for anyone. However, I'm glad to know that it will go over the speed limit for passing without me being the one to try it. Nice color.

BC Hydro has plans to install a network of 50-100kW DC Fast chargers on both routes to Alaska (Alaska Highway and Cassiar Hwy) by 2025. Hopefully they follow through. Will make it a lot easier in an EV. (Although wishing they were 350kW instead)

I have run into gas stations shutting down at night in Wyoming and Montana in the 90's where I had to sleep in my truck near a gas station because I wasn't going to make it to another town. I also ran into a problem in North Dakota once with my diesel Golf where I got down to 25 miles of range because four stations in a row only had the larger nozzles for trucks that were too big for a car. I was almost ready to buy a gas can to fill from the pump and then empty into the car when I got to a station with the correct pumps. It makes it interesting.

It looks a lot better than the last time I was up there in the 80's. My father was part of the construction crews that built the highway in '42/'43 so I had to drive it myself. Fort Nelson is the town, North Rockies is the region . . . don't confuse folks. You really need to actually do some research. Caribou. Muncho Lake is something to see, especially in late spring/early summer. It is funny watching a tenderfoot who didn't do his research out on the ALCAN . . .

Don’t worry about the length! That is the best thing. All of the detail and just seeing all of the vistas and the towns is great. I know it might seem long for you, but you lived it, you know? For us, it is our first time.

I look forward to the day when we can do this trip in an EV! You're a pioneer for future EV adventurers!

The Card Lock fuel stations are exactly like Tesla’s walled garden Superchargers. They are where you want them, but unless you have the secret handshake, you can’t use them. Card locks are a small percentage of fuel stations, but Tesla’s walled garden is a decent percentage at about 1/4 of the DC Fast Charger Stations in the US.

TFL Truck is doing a F-150 Lightning to Alaska series right now. It’ll be interesting to see. I’ve personally driven it twice in a Jeep. Awesome adventure. What we found was that we just had to stop at night and wait for the filling stations to open… same as what you found. But we were staying in hotels along the way.

Alaska is the last one for me too! Hoping to check it off in the summer 2023, finally!

Love the videos. One note, we don't need to see the van drive off... We know what a car driving off looks like and I imagine it's a lot of setup and circling back.

Love the video. Reminds me of when I drove the Richardson Highway from Fairbanks to Valdez and back years ago. The scenery and the silence was phenomenal.

FYI you can combine two TT-30s to make a 240v connection. They sell the adapters on Amazon.

You can't complane if you don't stop at every gas station as you go down the road, i gut to stay toped up, just in case you have to go farther , and its smart of you to have them little gas juges too, but you should have a couple more, its best to have to much then not enough of any thing ,if you can aford it. you should have just camped out , reat there at the gas stachion, and save some gas too.

Really like your videos ! Your interesting story about how the Alaska highway got started. Now what I understand historically, is that after Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the US built the highway in order to move military supplies and men to Alaska in order to prevent a Japanese invasion of Alaska. The story of how the dirt/gravel highway was built in at times subzero weather is a great story in itself. Jack Denton TX

Canada has installed 50kW fastish chargers from Flo which appear to be free. Once you get to Alaska you would have to use 14-50 plugs at RV parks aside from a few fast charging spots. I don't know when this video was shot, but TFL has already driven their Lightning to Dead Horse. On Plug Share I see reviews from Chevy Bolts on those fast chargers

I used to live in Alaska (Fairbanks) and I never drove there in the past. AFter watchign your first set of videos (the ones before this one) I took a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe (JLU) with a roof tent and as much stuff as we could pack there, and it was a blast. So, it kind of did a bit of electric only driving in parts? it was fun. I do plan to switch Jeep for a F-150 Lightning in the future when I can get a hold of one or the orders open up.... However, Sept. 8 Jeep is likely to announce an all electric Jeep EV!!!! :) Right now I like Hybrid b/c I'm not sure how capable I'd be to take a F-150 Lightning to Alaska other than using a Ferry, and the drive down the Alcan highway was worth doing!. Will i be able to take a Jeep EV or Truck EV in future? ABRP says no so far. and thats my give so far so if there is a plan, please post it? Thanks!

I always understood the Alcan was a WW2 product. It was built to better secure the state by the Federal govt. 🤷‍♂️

If I may ask, about how much did you spend on fuel? This video motivates me to drive up there so I’d like to plan accordingly. I would expect to spend maybe $1000 on the way up from California, and the same back down. This is based on fuel prices near me, and I’m not sure what they are further north

It's strange you kept saying no one on the road AFTER 10PM... Back in PA, in the rural area, no one is on the road after 9PM.... it doesn't have to be in CAN or Near Alaska... lol

"Bombing through at max speed"... Of course you need to refuel soon!! How far will you get "bombing along" with an EV??? Nobody else on the road at night.... Probably not advised to night drive slot due to wildlife crossing, and major potholes??? How many folks there need to go out and about at night??? You have exited metropolis!!!!! What did you expect??? Throngs of drivers at all hours heading to/from entertainment/employment/visiting friends??? HAHAHA!

Electric vehicles don’t do well in major cold weather

EV fill stations will be almost as expensive as petro within a few years… and you can thank our politicians! I own vacation rentals with 50amp EV charge ports and I started charging guests a fee who plug in. Nothing is cheap anymore!
