Back in the 70s and early 80's, there was sort of an unwritten rule, don't try to play Hendrix, you won't do it justice. Then came along Stevie Ray Vaughn. He could absolutely do Hendrix justice. On a side note, SRV was sort of a lesson in missed opportunities, and counting your blessings. As a child, I was too young to ever get the chance to see Hendrix live, and it was regretful that I would never get that chance, but then I went to college in Austin in the 80s, and I had the opportunity to see SRV several times, so it all sort of evens out. We may never get the chance to go back to see the greats of the past, but there are and will be greats in our present and future. Just make the time to get out, and see what's going on around you. Take chances, and you will be rewarded with a lifetime of amazing memories.

You know Stevie and Jimi played everyday. It’s been said that Jimi would sleep with his guitar because he would dream about music and would wake up grab the guitar and learn the music he dreamed. All the great soloists were like this, be it Jazz or Rock, guitar or saxophone. Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong, it’s not about technic or musical knowledge it’s about how the brain rewires itself to transmit thoughts and feeling through an instrument that is so familiar that the instrument itself kinda disappears and the human qualities are brought to the listener. Hendrix was a para-trooper and I think jumping out of airplanes had a lot to do with his sound and style in a way that surfing had a lot to do with Dick Dale’s sound, Dick Dale was a player Jimi was inspired by. Stevie basically revived that Hendrix and Albert Collins style in an era that was dominated by synth pop, he was just so incredible and in many was perfected that musical form. Great reaction. Thanks.

@@Hartlor_Tayley Easy to do. Albert Collins is the one who introduces SRV at Bush's inauguaral ball, where he plays Texas Fl00d like a beast, breaking a string & switching from #1 to 'Charley', the white guitar to finish. There's some nice bootlegs of performances out there, if you poke around.

I was a Freshman in high school in 1969. That was the year Hendrix appeared at Woodstock. It was a time of innovation in music like no other. We would hear bands play all over and whenever they would say anything about playing a Hendrix tune, we'd all kind of roll our eyes and say, "Yeah....sure you are." No one came close to what Hendrix could do. Fast forward to 1985, and now I'm 30, married and raising a family. A friend told me about this guy from Texas that could cover Hendrix like no one else. To this, I gave the usual response. "Yeah...right." I did finally listen to SRV play "Little Wing" and I was amazed. But when I heard him do "Voodoo Chile", it was even more astounding. I've been a fan of his ever since. In my mind, there's no one better at playing guitar. He's been gone now for more than 30 years. His style is as fresh today as it was then. Timeless. It never gets old. So glad younger folks are picking up on these masters and innovators in music. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

At one point back in the '80s when I was just a kid my aunt took me to an AA meeting in Austin and Stevie AND John Lee Hooker was there. I was too young to appreciate it and didn't even know who they were until years later when my aunt told me. and because it's Anonymous you're not supposed to out people. But at that point they were of course passed away.

Stevie Ray used Jimi's pedal whenever he covered his songs. Stevie Ray went to see Jimi's father to personally request his permission to cover his songs. He had no album, no record contract, no name, but he reduced the stage to a pile of smoking cinders and, afterward, everyone wanted to know who he was." His guitar often reduces my brain to cinders.

Stevie had great respect for Jimi and actually approached his dad about covering Voodoo Child to which his dad agreed. Stevie used Jimi's Vox V846 pedal on his Hendrix covers and a few other songs. Not sure if it's true, but I saw where Stevie's brother Jimmy got the pedal for him.

Another Jimi/Stevie side by side you might be blown away by would be 3rd Stone From The Sun from Hendrix's ARE YOU EXPERIENCED album (you might have to purchase Hendrix's version - i can't find a free play on the internet, just covers). SRV performed a great cover of it at the El Mocambo (that entire show is priceless, and if you haven't gotten to Texas Flood, shame on you! LOL). When Hendrix came to light, we had never heard an electric guitar played like that. Feedback was considered a nuisance; get rid of it, turn it down! Hendrix said; think so? He walked right up to the amp, cranked the volume, and manipulated, modulated, and mastered that recycling sound to create something completely original and beautiful. Watching Stevie Ray Vaughan play in tribute is an Experience.

This video is a good place to watch carefully his right hand as he in a millisecond changes tones with the volume/tone knobs and pickup switch. What you can't see is how he coordinates the wah pedal at the same time to create exactly the sound he wants at times with the individual notes. I was embarrassed to to pick up my guitar. And at the time I owned a sweet 56 strat and a 61 firebird. They weren't expensive in those days.

I love SRV. However, for the full Voodoo experience, you have to go back to the author. Hendrix wrote two songs - Voodoo Chile (yes it is spelled this way with an e, not a d) the original long composition, then Voodoo Child (with a d not an e) Slight Return. SRV covered the slight return improv, nearly note for note. Reviews of his cover are always good but many of the professional reviewers could not figure out the point of such a close copy. You should listen to both Hendrix songs, in order, to get a feel for not just the Return, but the atmosphere of the entirety of the 2 songs and mind of the creator. So many (too many) do not know the Hendrix masterpieces in their original form, on the Electric Ladyland album. Not just songs, they are statements of the era with a distinctive mood. Even if you don’t post these on Dicon, you owe it to yourself to check it out. Don’t look for live videos. Only the album version will provide both the sound quality and eyes closed experience.

Strongest recommendation to review 'Little Wing' by SRV from that same El Mocambo show. Minus the behind the back, that song is every bit the guitar masterpiece that 'Texas Flood' is.

Hey Daniel, you should really do a comparison of another Hendrix song, Little Wing. The original and SRV’s cover are very different.👍

It goes without saying that SRV is amazing, but that band is tight, tight, tight!!

Love both JH and SRV. For your next cover comparison, go for "She's Not There" first by the Zombies and then Santana from their Moonflower album.

Jimi Hendrix invented it… Stevie Ray Vaughan perfected it.

Everyone worships this man, rightfully so. Nobody ever seems to say - wow that is one hell of a band back there. Double Trouble was one bad ass group of men. Never get credit!!!!!

One small thing that imo Jimi explored more and had more mastery of was feedback control. Perhaps there is some good to great feedback tidbits with Stevie but it seems he struggles, understandably with it sometimes. Of course, Stevie added other things to the mix. They are very much equals in my book. Hendrix was a conduit frequently with the feedback used as a paintbrush. I love both, I have so much Stevie and a lot of Jimi so, this is just my investigatory opinion. Great video, love this period in his life, clean, sure and strong… so ironic to lose him at his best.
