Excellent video, if you have something like channel strip with a pre-amp already included with the unit, then you dont need to buy one.

I have outboard gear (pre amp/ compressor) running into Apollo twin x .. all of a sudden my gain on my pre doesn’t give good levels any more and the only way to get volume is if I boost my line levels on my Apollo to like 38dB . I never had this issue before . And I even switched out pre / cables and still having the same issue

Great video mate! Can you please help me on something? I have an interface with only 2 outputs that I use for the monitors. In my case, how can I use my outboard gear to mixing and listen to the result in real time on the monitors? Should I upgrade for an interface with more outputs? Don’t know if I have been clear 😅 thanks mate!

If it is only monitor outs then yeah you will need more IO for mixing with outboard gear. If you are recording only then you can just daisy chain everything to go in but I am assuming you want to mix with the gear.

I followed each step and even changed i/o settings in Pro tools. Still I was not able to print the pre recorded vocals. Do the cables matter? I used TRS cable FOR CHANNEL 3 and XLR CABLE For CHANNEL 1.

Is there a reason why the 3/4 out is set to virtual channels rather than the analog 3/4 under the console mixer? Does this affect the line inputs or create a feedback loop if they were assigned to the analog channels?

Wondering the same thing. Why is it labeled virtual 1? this made it confusing when you said you were going into line level 1 but out virtual 1

You want to send all vocals grouped together into outboard gear? If so you would need a stereo unit if you have anything stereo like panning, reverb... but if all are mono you can send it out mono. Use the mixing setup and instead of using the individual track use a aux that has the vocals sent to it

If you just want a controller then you can pick from all types big and small. A small option is faderport and it gets bigger from there

So you can bypass the Apollo mic preamp and use an external mic pre instead? For some reason people say you can't bypass the preamps unless it's the Apollo rack model. I'm so confused lol.

Not on the twin. You still run through the pres even when line level but they are transparent so it’s not going to be noticeable

@@RawTechniqueStudios Okay so from my understanding I can use an external mic pre right? It would have to go through line level and the twin x pre's still wouldn't be fully bypassed, but at the same time not noticeable. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. If I'm correct when using an external pre on the twin x, should I keep the 48v off on the interface and just use the external pre 48v like I normally would? Also I have the latest Alienware gaming laptop, and it has thunderbolt 4 built in so which twin x should I buy? I've heard some horror stories with the thunderbolt version on Windows.. Also I would like to apologize for all of these questions, I'm truly just trying to get a clear understanding of the apollo line.. Initially I was going to buy the x6, but if there's a way for me to still use my external pre on the twin x then I'm saving my money.. Right now I use a UAD 710 twin-finity pre, and I'm running it through a compressor going into a puigtec style EQ, then my audient id44.

@@ALiGzz you are correct on everything. I use Mac and the thunderbolt is solid but never tried on windows. I personally use the twin and would have no problem going through line level even if the pres can’t be bypassed. Some people want perfection but odds are they wouldn’t hear a difference.

Instead of using an external preamp, couldn't you just do it in this order? Your mic Xlr into your Apollo mic in1 then, Apollo line out 3 to your outboard gear, then from outboard gear into your Apollo line in2

Depends. If you are mixing with the outboard gear and you don't mind the internal mic pre then yes you can record it first then send that out to the outboard gear to mix and print. But if you are trying to go in and out all live you will most likely have a delay which will make it hard to record.
