It’s a 16 ft Whaler and I discovered that it was the battery cable patch panel under the starboard back seat.Cleaned up the connections and she was good to go. I did learn a lot in this video though.
This walkthrough has been tremendously helpful in getting my 72 Johnson 60hp (Hydro-Electric Shift) back up and going. After rewiring the ignition switch I still wasn’t hearing a click from the solenoid. I bypassed the solenoids to put 12v to the starter and it kicked right off. My question now here is this. From the solenoid(the side that connect to the battery, not the starter) I have the same purple/red wires. One runs directly to the terminal block and the other runs through the 20amp fuse back through the plug to the switch. The two terminals off the solenoid are marked S and I. The I is closer to the + battery lead and leads directly to the ignition switch while the other terminal looks to go up towards the stator. From my understand that second terminal should be my ground, correct? Maybe it’s possible it’s grounded up near the stator/flywheel? Thanks!
I wish I had seen this video a week ago. Hooking up an old 76 55hp Johnson last week resulted in a melted ground below the power pack, fried rectifier, destroyed power pack and a wiring harness full of regret. ENSURE GROUND ON STARTER, and that the solenoid wont stick like mine did and send full amps to a 8 gauge wire via the engine block. Horrible day and a 300 dollar bill... if it starts.
