It's almost time for the Outlaws of Thunder Junction Pre-Release! In this video I give you my thoughts on the new cards for Magic: the Gathering's newest set, focusing on how they play in Limited.
What my grades mean:
I use a letter grade system, and my grades usually fall into a bell curve (Very few A’s and F’s, lots of C’s.)
A - Bombs that are always your first pick, they completely warp the game in your favor, and they easily pull you into their color(s). You always first pick these. These are cards you are ecstatic to have in your deck. Most sets have 15-20 of these. Tend to mostly be Mythics or Rares, though sometimes an Uncommon gets there.
(Unstable Glyph Bridge, Zoetic Glyph, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal)
B - Premium removal spells and highly efficient creatures, often worth first picking. Still strong enough to pull you into their colors, but not quite as game or draft warping as A’s are. These are cards you feel good about having in your deck, and you would play several copies of most of them. Mostly Uncommons and higher, but there are usually 5-10 commons that get there too.
(Oltec Cloud Guard, Inverted Iceberg, Join the Dead)
C - Filler. These are cards you neither feel good or bad about having in your deck. You play them if you’re in their colors, but they don’t tempt you to go into their color at all. Usually includes reasonably efficient creatures, good combat tricks, and removal spells. These appear at all rarities, but are most frequently Common. (Ironpaw Aspirant, Brackish Blunder, River Herald Guide)
D - Playable in an emergency. These are cards that you don’t feel so good about playing, but in a pinch, sometimes you just have to play them. These are often inefficient vanilla creatures or overly narrow cards. These appear at all rarities. (Frilled Cave Wurm, Glowcap Lantern, Seeker of Sunlight)
F - Unplayable. These are cards that you should never play. There are very few of these in modern Limited formats, but they do appear at all rarities, with the most usually appearing at Rare and Common. These are cards whose effects are pretty much useless or overly narrow. (The Enigma Jewel, Canonized in Blood, Hit the Mother Lode)
There are two categories of cards that I give two grades to: Build Arounds and Sideboard Cards.
Build Around: These are cards that need special synergy to be at their best - synergy that won’t just come naturally. For these cards, I give one grade indicating how I think the card will perform in a typical deck of that color, and another grade if you manage to get there on synergy. (Gargantuan Leech, Terror Tide, Throne of the Grim Captain)
Sideboard Cards: These are generally cards that are Ds or Fs in your mainboard, but can perform much better out of the sideboard - at least as a C or higher
(Tectonic Hazard, Malicious Eclipse)

One Last Job can also get Mounts, so it can get two creatures for 6 mana

Something that might be fun would at the end of the video give the whole color a letter grade on how you think it will perform in the format based on how many high grades you gave especially at lower rarities?

Is there gonna be two separate videos for the vault and most wanted slots or will it be one video? Or are one of those not in play boosters maybe.

Worth noting for 6 mana “one last job” can get two creatures back assuming the second ability gets a mount

The 8 mana mode on Final Showdown is also relevant, turning off enemy death triggers (and indestructible) is nice.

Rustler Rampage seems especially worthwhile in selesnya decks where it has the potential to set up a massive attack by untapping the creatures that saddled your mounts.

It's surely not amazing, but blowing up a 6/6 or 7/7 is almost always going to feel like a win. An F is a purely unplayable card...which this isn't.
@seveneightlp
@seveneightlp 2 месяца назад
Stroke of Midnight from WOE is basically a better version of this (hits any nonland, gives a 1/1 instead, only costs 1 more) and it was one of white's worst-performing cards in the set.
@XiaosChannel
@XiaosChannel 2 месяца назад
@@seveneightlp i would say it's worse since hitting enchants/planeswalker is good to have but not always relavant in limited, while 1 additional mana is always relavant, esp 2 -> 3; still that's a good case you've made

Moreover, like Phyrexia, this set has a noticeably large number of 'deal with this right now or die' bombs. I think that makes this better than it would be in most sets.

Some nice flicker cards in white, which isn't much in limited but great for people who are into that kind of degeneracy in Commander. The spree one is one of the rare 2 mana blinks that doesn't specify "you control", which increases the potential effect it can have way more in practice than it looks on paper.

Can't Aven Interrupter interrupt your OWN spells so you can plot them? Or too edge-case?
@bfrobin446
@bfrobin446 2 месяца назад
It's legal to interrupt your own spells, but it's too niche to affect the grade. The payoffs for casting a plotted card aren't good enough to justify casting a spell with the intention to interrupt it, so the best case for interrupting your own spell is if your opponent uses a trick in response.

You read Bounding Felidar incorrectly. Listening to your description I believe you understand the card to gain life OR 1/1 counters based off of HOW MANY attackers you have. It does not. Only the Felidar needs to attack to get the life gain and the counters. With that, I don't think the rating changes, still expensive and still average stats.

He said the +1/+1 counters will make your attacks better, but he never implied that only attacking creatures receive the stats boost.

One more job should be higher because it any target in your graveyard so it need to be a A or B at most.

Prairie dog is a bomb to me. If you cast it t2 and then hold an instant/plot the game is just done. I can promise a 65% OH wr on 17lands and above 60 wr GIH

i’ve played with it a little in test drafts with friends and it’s very good for sure, but it also felt bad to play suboptimally (to get counters on the dog) just for your opponent to hit it with removal (which the set has SO MUCH of). You can always just play it as a 2/2 lifelinker and it does win topdeck wars, but I would recommend mostly ignoring the counters for no cards cast ability tbh

Suggestion to change your format. It would help me if you revealed the rating earlier in the discussion for each card. As i would have more time to process it. I realize this would change how the video worked. But i think it would be an improvement for an educational standpoint.

Final Showdown - More like a B to B- In order to destroy all but one creature you need 4WW. the 1W is okay but It's 1 mana too slow for how fast this format will be. Frontier seeker is a B. It gurantee land drops if you keep blinking it for extra value. High Noon - Straight up F. You can't cast anything for the turn after you cast high noon and there's no stax synergy in this set. Holy Cow - Probably closer to a B+ with the scry trigger and whte's theme in this set is blinking. Mythical Tether - 4W for an instant removal is closer to a B+, Nurturing Pixie - Actually gets better late game for it's psedo blink effect. It's a B- Requsition Raid - Probabaly the only C+ sideboard printed in any draft set. Steer Clear - More likely C+ it's a combat trick that lets you trade smaller creature for their big. Sterling Keykeeper - a bear is already a C and this card got more text so it's a C+
@Shawnybravo42
@Shawnybravo42 2 месяца назад
Regarding your assessment of mystical tether: 5 mana for instant speed enchantment removal is not b+. Especially if you think it's going to be a fast format. Rarely does 1 for 1 removal earn a grade that high in recent limited sets. Creatures create too much value by themselves nowadays. The card would need to do something else like gain life or create a clue token, etc. The card is still good though. The flash text that turns it into a "final death" is a nice upside for the late game but not enough extra to warrant anything above a b.

Frontier seeker will only hit plains about 1/2 the time, unless you're running an above average number of basic plains. Set also has a bunch of common lands so often enough you'll only have like 7 plains in the deck, and there aren't that many mounts to bolster probabilities. I do not want to spend a flicker card for a chance at drawing a land though getting a second roll at it without spending a card will be solid. Card is probably a C+ or B-, to balance out the 50% of the time the card is nothing more than a vanilla 2/1. My favorite debate is whether a card is a D or an F, since it really doesn't matter. High noon is a D in boros as an overcosted removal spell that should be replaced by almost any other card, unless you don't have them. The timing restriction basically doesn't matter except for hilariously hating on U/R archetype, and White will be better than average at playing around the timing restriction thanks to the W/U flash theme. You can also cast this as your last spell on that turn, so you can double spell the turn you play this. In sum, bad removal spell with another ability that doesn't matter. D, not an F. Sterling Keykeeper is not a c+, Frostbridge guard in WOE was a C- and it had positive synergy in that set. A vanilla 2/2 is C-, maybe even D+. There's so many 2MV 2/3 or 3/2 in this set with powerful effects, the bar is high. You need two drops, but the keykeeper is the worst white has to offer, so you only play it as curve filler when necessary, hence C-. I think generally blinking will play a smaller role than you're thinking, there's no commons and only 2 uncommon with the effect tacked on the fairy bounces to hand so you don't even want to bounce the higher MV cards with ok ETB effects, and the ETB are nothing exceptional. If anything I'd say white's theme is go-wide/tokens.
