@craiglowery4427 This pass was one of my unexpected favorites so far in Colorado, and the history just makes it that much better. So glad you enjoyed it!
I did this trail once around 2002 in a chevy trailblazer, still think of it from time to time, seemed so remote. climbing up thru the trees, off to the left was a small pond and a Momma and baby moose were standing in it. I now live in COS, have done many CO and UT trails, I have a JKUR lifted on 35's. Great vid.
Thanks so much for sharing such an awesome memory! This place feels remote indeed. Any suggestions on other lesser traveled trails? We are always seeking out new places to explore and CO and UT are places we will likely return to often. Enjoy adventuring!
I see you have the fold back roof top on your jeep, very cool to stand on the seat and see above the roof, I have hesitated to buy the fold back as i am concerned about how noisy it might be going down the interstate at 70mph, what are the disadvantages of being able to fold the roof back?
Our JK was already a little loud after we took the carpet out on the inside, and the top did make it a little louder on the interstate. We can still have a conversation while driving in regular conditions, but add some wind or a heavy rain, especially at high speeds, and that is more of a challenge. It is also colder in the winter and warmer in the summer. They aren't for everyone. But even with all of that, we are likely to buy one for any other jeep we may own simply because we love the ease of opening or closing it in seconds, the storage savings when we don't have to find a place to carry the freedom top panels when they are off, and greatly enjoy the awesome views of nature when the top is open. Hope that helps!
Kite Lake adds another 6 miles or so one-way (12 round trip) and the trail is reportedly more challenging than Stony Pass in places. We did not drive it, but estimates I found from people who did suggest it would take about 2 1/2 hours from Silverton or 3 from Creede (one way). Stopping to enjoy the scenery and explore (which I highly recommend) can add substantially to that time. Happy adventuring!
