So, gradually the sibs have been ruining their homeland, their father's estate, etc... and the "evil" Overlord is the only one that gives a shit. Sounds legit.
That does seem to be a pattern in this, save for the overlord after this guy, all of the overlords end up countering something arguably worse than themselves. These two siblings selling out their own kingdom, the seven “heroes” who each end up becoming corrupt villains in their own right that reap havoc across their own lands, a tyrannical empire that basically tries to destroy all magic in the wake of a massive disaster (only for to actually be a plot to hoard all the magic by it’s emperor who’s actually the one that caused said disaster in the first place), and the stuck up “shining justice” organization of paladins who are so obsessed with their ever vague concept of good that they’re basically dictators (and secretly stage attacks of evil just to remain relevant) and spread a form of corruption that basically turns anything they don’t like “cute” and subservient.
The first Overlord was essentially an authoritarian monarch who ruled with an iron fist and in a kingdom ravaged by famine, bandits, thieving hobbits wolves and weak leadership, an Overlord taking over would probably be a breath of fresh air to the kingdom. In the game, you can over-hear some of the villagers lamenting about how things were back when the Overlads uncle "The Black Baron" ruled the kingdom before his brother. Sure he effectively enslaved them, but at least they were kept protected and fed.
On another note, minus how they treat their brother, I can almost respect the siblings. They genuinely care about their subordinates, both lamenting the deaths of their friends.
Does anyone else feel like the third act was cut from the game? Act 1 was establishing yourself. Act 2 was getting rid of the elves and the dwarves. And Act 3 was probably supposed to be you defending your castle from your siblings, who return to capture it. It just seems to me that "infiltrate the dwarves and kill their leader without anyone finding out it was you" isn't exactly a finale storyline.

didn't they make some weird hero based dungeon crawler thing years ago? Overlord is a childhood game of mine's, so I really wish they do some sort of reboot -- it could essentially be a multiplat Fable if it wanted.
Does anyone else find the cutscene animations of this game to actually be better than Overlord Raising Hell and 2? They look much more 'hand-crafted' and polished for each cutscene. I also liked the Overlord's body language.
Right? The first and second games are better gameplay wise. But the Overlords in them just kinda stand/sit there while they're being talked at. Lord Gromgard has a lot more personality despite being just as silent. Hopefully, if we ever get a new Overlord game they'll take some ques from Dark Legends storytelling and cutscenes.
Maybe in the future, they may release what I like to call 'Overlord: The Evilness Enhanced Collection' set. It contains Overlord(including Raising Hell), Overlord II, and Dark Legend bundled in one disc/cartridge/download. Graphics will be enhanced greatly, new bonus features such as collectables, more quests/extended story, and Behind The Scenes concept art and animations.
The Dark Legend armors were always my favorite of the franchise. they almost looked like metal flesh skinned from a alien creature. I really hate that the Overlord series is dead. I would have liked to have seen Overlord 3, but instead we got that dungeon crawler one in 2015
We’ve gotten remakes for both Destroy all Humans and Destroy all Humans 2 - so there might be an interest in similar games, including the Overlord series.
Only bad thing I can say about overlord 1 "including dlc" overlord 2 and dark legend is they are rather short "this one being shorter than the other 2". If they are a little bit longer it would make the series a little more well known ... "few games have the premise of playing the bad guy... This is one of the fewer series/ games that does this premise without making you feel bad afterwards"
You know.... this could make a decent anime. I mean the other Overlord games are pretty mindnumbing, just Evil Come As Evil Do, just for the hell of it. But here you had an actual goal, Claim your family's land as your own and destroy your Siblings while doing so, and also collecting all the hives to obtain More power and a bigger army, just for them to return home, only to find You at the throne, dressed up and Powered up, with your own army at your side, only for them to realize (too late) that it was their own little brother that was behind it all along.
This one could probably use some series/anime, because it is quite linear, as opposed to other games. When something has multiple endings, it is quite hard to make a movie out of it

If Triumph Studio can't make a new Overlord game (they have been bought by Paradox), what about if Climax made Overlord 3? They made Overlord Dark Legend Even if Wii was more limited than PC games at this time, Overlord Dark Legend was really a cool game! A bit easy and short but still fun and all. The atmosphere was like Overlord 1, less dark but you have the halflings and fantasy stuff :3
Overlord is the perfect franchise to become a multiplat Fable equivalent game. It's very Fable inspired, but it' still has a unique spin to it -- it's unfortunate we'll probably never see the ip again. I'm not even asking for a AAA game either -- I'd settle for a AA or indie level budget so long as what we get is a polished fun game.
I wish their was an overlord game where you finally catch gnarl planing shit, or at least have a wider selection of choices. Plus what if a female 'overlord' was born? would she be able to control the minions or would she be ignored? Has anyone else caught on to the fact that most if not all overlords die just after they've fucked shit up for everyone else? Why/how do the hives get stolen in every game?! If their so important then why don't they have some way of protecting them (in overlord 2 they are in the underworld so HOW)? These things have been bugging me so plz help me out here, and yes i just went all gamingsins on this bitch.
+mizuzu21 One day I pray a good story writer will see the potential of this universe. The writing of the dialogue and story are entertaining but I just want someone to push it over the edge. Why not huge wars between minions and enemy races? Why can't we command mordor-sized armies to crush the good elves while dominating the newly mentioned Dark Elves and the mysterious ninja Ruborians as allies? We always hear about great wars in the Overlord realm, why can't we live and even begin a great of gargantuan scale? It hurts that no one ties up the plot holes and creates a great universe to rival that of Lord of the Rings or Narnia.
+mizuzu21 This takes place before the events of overlord 1. Overlords aren't born, they're made. This is evidenced by how gnarl took in a hero and made him the fourth overlord. After the death of an overlord, the minions with scatter like cockroaches. The time of peace and prosperity between the death of an old overlord and the rise of a new one is when the hives get moved around. After every overlord game, it fast forwards a bit until the fall of the overlord. If peace doesn't last forever, then neither does evil. Sooner or later, a hero is bound to come along and kill the overlord. Hope that answers some of your questions. So far, there have been no plot holes. @Cocolo copoco is just full of shit. That, or he doesn't understand the definition of a plot hole, in which case, he is still full of shit.
+an asian le It's not a plot hole that stands out in the main plot, it's lots of little things. I'll elaborate: if one chose Velvet as mistress in Overlord I the overlord in Overlord II will still have Rose as a mother. Another is that the map in Overlord II doesn't make sense as in the Wastelands you visit the Halfling village prior to the Great Cataclysm, the Halfling village being there would mean that they were right at the foot of the destroyed dark tower and so everything you can visit in Overlord I is destroyed... so where has all this Nordberg, Everlight or Empire land come from? Or was it always there, because if it was always there, the overlord in Overlord I hasn't exactly dominated much of the land. This also infers that everything in overlord I Ruboria, Golden Hills, Heaven's Peak etc. was in that map space that is now the Wasteland. I suppose you could argue against them being plot holes but they're just little niggles that I wish some one would tie up. Plot holes was used because of lack of a better word and to help with a broader understanding. All I was stating was my frustration that the universe bursts with potential, potential so far untapped, and will probably remain that way.
Cocolo copoco I can answer the first one for you. Rose is the cannon ending, meaning that it is what really happens in the story. Sometimes, games give you choice, but their story follows a specific path, if that makes sense. The only game that comes close to what you want is dragon age, and even then, your choices sometimes don't matter. There is an inconsistency, though. If you go to the ruins in overlord II, you can see a broken piece of furniture that belonged to velvet. It begs the question of who the mother really is. In terms of everlight and whatnot, the game world just expanded, kind of like how we got a bigger pandora on borderlands2. Think of it as zooming out on the map. You see more stuff now that the borders are bigger. Also, times change, and so do cities and the land. The glorious empire took over and created a few new cities in the absence of the overlord. That is how the world works. Nothing stays the same. Hope that helps you a bit. If you have any more questions, I'll answer them to the best of my abilities.
Neither. He was preceded by at least one Overlord - the Black Baron - and the reasons we know he's not the protagonist of _Overlord_ and _Raising Hell_ are spoilers for that original game. It is *possible*, but by no means confirmed, that he's the Overlord whose defeat by the band of heroes sets up the first game - but as I say, the games don't actually give us any evidence of that. Indeed, if the Black Baron *was* the first Overlord - though again, we don't know that to be the case - then one of Gnarl's lines strongly suggests that there were at least two after Lord Gromgard and before anyone we see in O1.

Not exactly. Duke was simply not as competent than his predecessor, Black Baron. Instead of actually sorting stuff out, he would embark on "epic quests" to regain his family's honor. And yes, also because of his daughter and elder son not taking interest in their own people, helping elves and dwarves instead
With how much all these comments talk about wanting a new game I feel like some small fan group should just ask the devs for the rights and make the game themselves or just do it anyways cause it’s clear the devs have sadly abandoned this great franchise. the only thing i don't get is where this game fits in the time line clearly its supposed to be about the overlord you play in the first one but its said he was a hero who had no connections with the minions prior to this who was trying to kill the minions last master
Angus Wallace this isn't the overlord from overlord 1 actually I thinks its hinted that this is the second overlord the one beaten by the 8 heros the one you fight at the end of overlord 1.
(Ik this comment is a bit old, but fuck it, I'm bored) It's a prequel. The guy in this game is the first one with the official title of Overlord, though it was speculated that there were overlords or something like them before this and even before the Butcher, this character's uncle, due to Gnarl listing off ways overlords have died, with the fates of the known overlords from the games not quite matching up to those he lists. The son is the fourth overlord from Overlord 2, who was dropped off in Nordhaven in the hopes that he wouldn't go down the path of his father.
Imma give ya an official timeline (sorta): Before the First Overlord (or Lord Gromgard, as some call him) came the Black Baron, who ruled Greenvale (land of humans) with an iron fist; the peasants didn‘t mind though, as long as he kept away bandits and wild beasts. It’s speculated by some that he was the "very first" Overlord, but Gnarl mentions several Overlords before him. Then he died (probably killed by Duke Gromgard, who was the Baron’s brother). He locked away all of his brother’s things and his throne room, as he considered him a stain on their family’s name. However, beforehand, the Black Baron entrusted his Minion-controlling gauntlet to Rollick, Castle Gromgard’s chef, to give it to his brother’s youngest child, as a piece of glorious revenge. When Duke Gromgard screws up Greenvale and his older children leave, Rollick gives the gauntlet to young Gromgard and so starts the rise of another dark lord, one that ends in death and screaming of many knive-ears and rockhuggers. Then he disappears, Castle Gromgard is abandoned and the Dark Tower is built. Then comes the Second Overlord (who is not stated to be the First’s son). He was probably the smartest of all Overlords and ruled a large domain. Then the Eight Heroes defeated him, but he possessed the Wizard, their leader, when he came to examine his body. The Second orders Gnarl to inter the Eighth Hero into a healing coffin and prepare him into his mock-successor, so that he can avenge the Second, rebuild the Dark Tower and get all of the domains under the thumb of Evil again. He then goes to corrupt the Seven Heroes. This bites him in the rear though, as the Third Overlord is not weak and after conquering the lands, he kills him. Then the Abysses open, the Third gets trapped in the Infernal Abyss, the Overlad is born and is carried away by Rose. Then Florian comes to get his magic, makes the Tower Heart explode, screws up the world with a magical plague and uses the catastrophe to found his Empire. Overlad grows up into the Fourth Overlord, destroys the Glorious Empire and becomes the ruler of the whole world. And the Fellowship of Evil is non-canon, as declared by Rhianna Prattchet, the main writer.
Can’t run an empire on rubble and ashes. Someone has to build the alters and statues, someone has to till the fields and mine the ore, and someone has to serve the overlord as slaves.
I think that’s part of this series charm, your the “evil overlord” but the people you’re fight are usually worse then you are. The first game for example, has the seven “heroes” who became corrupted and caused the land to suffer.
