If Tom Hanks hadn't been in Philadelphia, it would not have been made and no one would have seen it. It was brave of him at the time and it is idiotic to say that he should not have played that role.
Denzel washington was in it and Denzel is a better actor than tom hanks so stop saying it wouldnt have been made or seen! Tom hanks isnt that movie. He was a part of it. Not the whole movie.

This was one of the best shows of the season. John Waters is a really fun person, and the show was full of belly laughs. The New Rules Gender Apartheid segment really hit home for me.
But it was a ludicrous false equivalency to pretend that the gender apartheid is equal or worse than thousands of innocent people being bombed. And just as ludicrous to say people have to protest either everything or nothing.
@@terri6854 He was comparing the criticism of Israel's treatment of Palestinians in the west bank with gender apartheid, not with the war. He's saying that the outrage is selective--which it is--not that you have to protest just as much for the cause of gender apartheid, although you should.

I was 16 in 1968 and have vivid memories of Mayor Daley and his thugs. We were all protesting the draft, not the war. People misinterpret the student protests of the Sixties.

Agreed, gays have been playing straights for as long as Hollywood has been around, so there's no reason straights can't play gays. We've seen men play women and women play men. We've seen Jews play Nazis. As Waters said, it's called *acting.* (Well, okay, that's until you see Whites play Blacks, then it's called career suicide.)
Today gay people can openly play straight people. In the past, getting out of a gay closet, was thought of as a Hollywood deal- breaker. And not just there. Look at gay men like Elton John and Ricky Martin getting married to women. Today Elton John has a husband.
Oh hey, Tom if playing that role was so wrong for you give your Oscar back. And another thing about the movie Philadelphia, was that it was made right after Jonathan Demme made silence of the lambs which was lambasted by the LGBTQ community for being homophobic. Jonathan Demme listened to that crowd and came back with Philadelphia as a response that he understood their plight and underrepresentation. And he used his Oscar win for Silence of the Lambs to do it.
You are goading Tom Hanks to giving his Oscar back, but you don't understand these people and their mindset -- they would do it in an instant proudly, to signal as proof of their virtue. As for Demme, he was already working Philadephia even before Lambs came out, confirmed via Rolling Stone interview.
