Background: I burned up a 12v tire pump (wally world special) trying to pump up a heavy trailer tire. Decided to look into onboard air, and after seeing alot of jeep guys mounting yorks in the engine bay, decided I'd have a go at it. Could not be happier - it puts out SERIOUS air. Impact gun as much as you want, pulling my 8 lug wheels is no problem for example. $150 -$170 in whole project. York was junkyard for $40, air tank was craigslist for $30, etc.

Well done great work and very well explained, i did the same on a Toyota landcrusier here in Australian about 25 years ago, but i never had the air bags or gauges, well done

because the alternator pulley is slightly larger than the Alternator main pully in diameter, this functionally give you a higher rpm without having to increase the engine rpm's

Greg Ward, yes it’s just a bit bigger. I put the math i worked out for rpm in the video’s description. It made my head hurt working out the relationship between the engine’s crank rpm and the york’s! 😂

holy fuck that thing fills fast! Ive got a gast 2H single cylinder 12v compressor from an ambulance... it takes a rebuild kit every year, really wanting a york... im tired of the loud compressor and shit flow rate.

The york is amazing. Google will yield a list of vehicles that shipped with them, then its watching junkyards. They’re available new as well, but of course costs more.

This Old Dodge itll have to be dependable, might go with the ones that are modified for air with oil control rings etc. My rear is bagged and i can't go without air. Thanks for the info!

I think it pumps up fast at idle because the drive pulley may be smaller than orignal that ran pump.

sandman sandman The drive pulley off the alternator is smaller, but its also smaller on the serpentine pulley. A small pulley over drives the alternator, but as a drive pulley, small pulleys UNDERdrive. Basically - ignore the alt pulley size, the yorks rpm is determined by the relationship of the cummins’ crank and the york’s pulley. The york pulley is 1” smaller then crank, so its only very slightly over driven against engine rpm.

might be able to rig up a leveling valve like a semi truck has, it auto levels the rear bags depending on load

jacob fraser That’s an awesome idea. It’s about as easy as it gets now to adjust - plus I also adjust by feel, softer or firmer depending on road or load. Daily driving bags are at their 5psi min.

you would have to set it up so the bags lift slightly when the truck is empty, to keep a little pressure in them. simple plumbing, a supply from the tank, output to the bags and a dump. although you would want some sort of protection valve so that if you blow a line the bags don't deflate.

@@daltonsequipment4419 true, but they're extremely simple to just install with some very quick fabrication. Last time I replaced one I think the valve is some $30. The rest of building the system is control rods and a couple simple mounts.

What do you do with the coolant tank off the radiator? Noticed yours was missing...

It’s there. Passenger side of radiator in front of battery. Little tight but it fit.

Lance Nielsen Thanks man! I got the alt pulley from Kilby, now found at www.cuoffroad.com. They don’t really sell the pulley separately now I’m told. Honestly a machine shop should be able to weld a 1/2” v belt pulley centered on your alternator pulley for you.

As far as the bracket I don’t think I’d like to make and sell them. Grab a harbor freight welder or find a buddy with one and practice a while. There’s some awesome welding tutorial videos on RU-vid!

How often do you have to fill the compressor oil? I have a 210 waiting to be installed just haven't decided when to do it yet.

Travis Hanson GREAT question. Oil consumption will be based on hours of use for the York. I cycle mine on average a few times a week, with occasional “real” use. I changed an alternator out about a year and a half after installing the York, which meant pulling the compressor and mount off. While I had it off I changed the oil, it was still more or less full. Not a big problem. Also I have plenty of clearance to take the breather off the crankcase of the York and slip a zip tie in to check the oil. Not an exact measurement but at least you know there’s some in it still...

Big favor how many rpm do you need at the engine to keep the gauge above 90psi with the purge open? I run a painting auto body business and this would make my mobile stuff much better. I'm looking between this and the sandon 709 pump but not sure if I need two or just a high idle? Seems both pumps make about 9scfm at 90psi

for your air dump are you just using another solenoid? i like the idea of a electronic dump.

arnoldsq yep just a cheap air solenoid from amazon. 1/4” npt. Its real convenient to have a switch to drain the tank!

Where did you get the clutch pulley I have not seen one like that anywhere other than yours?

I Gomez that’s the original pulley and clutch from the 74’ international I pulled the York from. It was a mistake to not replace it, the bearings went out after about a year and I had to replace it. Unfortunately the new pulley locates the belt slightly differently so the bracket had to be re worked a bit. No biggie but would have been easier to do it all once instead of almost twice. 😂

How does the a/c clutch work?

Jon Vanlandingham The clutch engages when 12v is applied to the clutch’s electrical lead. Ground is completed through mounting brackets. When engaged it allows the power from the v belt to turn the York’s crank. When disengaged the clutch free spins on bearings, and does not transfer power to the York’s crank. The 12v power for the clutch is fed from an ignition on circuit to a toggle switch in the cab (to defeat auto operation) then through a standard air compressor pressure switch. When the system reaches cut in (low) psi, the switch engages and passes current. When the system pumps up to its cut out (high) psi, the switch clicks off, letting the clutch free spin.

4x4lou with muscles. Haha... seriously, since there’s no idler/tensioning pulley the bracket it slotted on top, and you just pull it right by hand and tighten the bolts. It does not have to be real tight - that york isn’t asking that many hp from its belt.

casey glisson From the york to the oil separator is a 1/4" ss hose, because it gets a bit hot right near the compressor. After the oil separator all the rest of the plumbing is 3/8" id rubber hose.

Is there a particular reason that lead to this over just installing the TuFlo550 that is made to go on the engine if it were in medium duty application with air brakes? Theyre about 13 CFM and if you are already adding a reservoir the rest of the control system is just mounting a governor onto the compressor and running line back to tank. Is there not enough room to make that work in the pickup? I only ask because, my solution for mobile service was to simply remove power steering pump and injection pump, add compressor and install. I just put a 25 gallon reservoir in because I was running 1" impact guns all the time.

Hey thanks for the comment. I don’t believe there’s room in the pickup’s engine bay for the compressor on the driver’s side mount. Plus I like power steering 👍😂

Eighth Acre Maker the pump just bolts to the back of the compressor. It just requires enough room but you’d still have power steering. I was just curious.

Steve Zickefoose thanks! No it ran great. Changed oil a couple times and settled with ATF in it. I understand they’re pretty easy to put rings in, if needed.
