Owen’s first day of school landed on a fun Halloween this year!! He’s officially back at school and we are all so excited for routines + structure! We had to wait to see our neuro for an updated seizure action plan so here we are! They also mentioned some things we would start to talk about in next years meeting about high school and my stomach went straight to my throat.

WE HAVE SOME BIG NEWS:
Owen now has a one on one aide now at this school! We had one when we were in public school and thrived to be able to be a part of class but still have that “person” for him specifically that would help him succeed in his days. Special Ed classes are smaller at a school like this with more paras but INDEED Owen still needs one and this has been one of my dreams being answered. Thank you team!

We have another great year ahead with Miss Anna as well who has been such a blessing in our journey. Her taking the time to text me through the days, good or bad, and sending me photos of him with friends or how he’s doing just fulfills my heart in the most unexplainable way.
When you find people who become a part of your tribe you never want to let them go. I’ve felt this with every teacher and person he’s had to help him. It’s sad when you have to “let them go” in a diagnosis like this because honestly ”letting go” is the hardest thing to do when you know you’re on a terminal path.

We got to see our favorite bus driver + bus aide this morning, he hugged his classmates he missed and held hands with a new girl that became his friend today. He colored Aunt Haley her first picture in the main office to hang up and Miss Anna got to hear her “I love you Danna” from Owen again! He came home with one little meltdown today and had the BEST DAY EVER.

It was Owen’s hardest year cognitively, the sweetest year of soaking in all three of them together, the most enjoyable but busy year meaning we went to 2 trunk or treats and 2 trick or treat nights! This life is so hard but boy the sweet moments in between are the ones we hang onto the hardest.

[ AWARENESS + DIAGNOSIS ]
Owen lives with Sanfilippo Syndrome. Also known as MPSIIIA, it is a rare, genetic, degenerative and terminal disease. This means that Owen’s brain will be permanently damaged by cells over time and he will eventually lose all skills, such as walking, talking, eating, etc. It is a childhood disease, also known as childhood Alzheimer’s and most, sadly, don’t make it into their teen years. Each individual is living a different journey in this horrible disease and this is ours. Thank you for being here with us to help support Owen and spread awareness.
