A big thankyou to Unkas at Bio360 Podcast for having me on to discuss oxalates and letting me re-post this! You can find the original:
Here : bio360.de/podc...
And here: • 378 Oxalates : Elliot ...
In this long discussion, we go through the basics of oxalates, where we find them in the diet, and some of the problems they can cause in the human body when they accumulate in excess. Further, we also discuss what people may be able to do to improve their body's ability to rid itself of oxalates.

I've already listened to a few of Elliots interviews on oxalates and still found all 3.5hrs of this discussion extremely interesting. The best is when he gives an encyclopaedic in depth answer simplifying something as complex as nutrition and human physiology in a way that accelerates everyone's knowledge on a topic and finishes with 'did that answer the question?' Yes Elliot, you just made anyone who can listen an expert in the field 😁 Elliot is going places, we're going to be seeing a lot more of him. Won't be long before Unkas will be telling everyone about the chat he once had with Overton before mentioning Saladino. Elliot is much more balanced with no bias or agenda.

I will be 58 years old in April. I’ve been following a vegan diet and some how managed to be a fat vegan. I just had kidney stone surgery when my body did an “ oxalate dump” after pursuing a paleo diet trying to feel better. I was not flourishing on a plant based diet. I’ve had brain fog, anxiety, fatigue, unexplained joint pain while following a plant based diet. No doctor ever mentioned oxalates. Not once! Imagine my disappointment when the urologist said to avoid tofu, blueberries, spinach, raspberries! That was everything in my refrigerator. Why do the professionals not know this? Once the stone was analyzed it was the “healthy foods” that caused it! I am shocked and now on my road to recovery. What a painfully rude awakening. I am thankful to find these answers. Thank you!

@@_____J______ you assume ignorance. I’m very familiar with that theory. And TMAO. Heme iron. Where do we stop? The more deeply you look into these theories the less convincing they are. You’ve obviously heard a vegan or vegan doctor talk about this supposed ‘mechanism’ and thought ‘wow yeah that’s very convincing’. Research deeper they are all, so far, bunk. I’ll tell you about another theory... vegan doctors clutch at straws to come up with ‘reasons’ and ‘theories’ to convince people that meat is unhealthy, but it’s not out of genuine scientific enquiry and a desire to uncover truth but it’s driven by ideology. EVERY time I look into these theories it doesn’t take long to uncover massive flaws. I’m open minded about all nutritional theories and mechanisms because I genuinely want to get to the truth, but I’m getting tired of the shenanigans and dishonesty by all the vegan ‘gurus’. At this point I wouldn’t believe a thing they say, I only consider their ideas from time to time in an effort to avoid getting stuck in an echo chamber. I think you may be stuck in one yourself.

Oxalates have wrecked my body. I thought I was being healthy by eating lots of plants, wholegrains, beans, nuts, dark chocolate, cocoa powder and turmeric and black pepper in extreme quantities etc. Over the years, it built up and because I was young doctors couldn't explain why I had joint pain, nerve pain and tingling, fatigue and weakness, peeling skin, ulcers in my mouth, heart palpitations, blocked sweat glands and blocked eyelash pores, and numerous other problems. I put it down to "ageing" despite being in my late 20s. I suffered from so many inexplicable health problems for years. I then suffered from diarrhoea every day for nearly two years, and doctors also couldn't explain that. Since cutting out most plant foods and high oxalate foods, my leaky gut has healed, I don't have diarrhoea, and all of my pain and other symptoms have disappeared. If I eat a lot of dark chocolate, the symptoms come back with a 2-3 day delay, because I'm still in the process of getting rid of the oxalates. I can't believe how all the advice of governments and doctors led to me harming myself, and they are even pushing plant foods harder and discouraging meat! The opposite of what we should be doing! Ironically, if I had never cared about my health, I probably would have been better off. It was eating too much of so-called healthy plant foods that damaged my body.

I was unaware to slowly reduce oxalate foods when I went carnivore 21/2 years ago…and last week I started with a small patch of hives which moved to my face arms and legs. This is about the most discomfort I have ever felt! Bought sweet potatoes on sallys recommendation and eating some of that per day, along with green tea. Ordering the supplements you also used. So far no relief after a week but holding on it will back off soon. My face is so bad I’m to embarrassed to go outside in public. How long did you skin dump last? Thanks.

@@suew4609 good luck on this path. I really suffered for almost three months. It felt like I went through two rounds of dumping at that time. Then I almost recovered completely, pain diminished, skin cleared almost 100%. Had about a month of being clear…then it hit again. But I will say every round was less and less discomfortable. This third round has gone on about three months or so but its not as bad or embarrassing. I still snag a small amount of sweet potato every day, and a cup of green tea in the morning. But recently been thinking of stopping those and see what affect it has on my skin. The little oxalate grains are gone. Maybe a couple times I can feel them on my skin, but overall so much better. @Prosper Fermentation reduces Oxalate content. Fermenting plants like Cucumbers, Cabbage, Kimchi, etc. reduces Oxalate content. But why would you want to eat large amounts of plants that you need to "disarm" in the first place? *Studies below* *Effect of Kimchi Fermentation on Oxalate Levels in Silver Beet (Beta vulgaris var. cicla)* www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5302357/ “The study showed that fermentation of kimchi significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the total oxalate concentration in the initial mix from 609.32 ± 15.69 to 374.71 ± 7.94 mg/100 g FW in the final mix which led to a 72.3% reduction in the amount of calcium bound to insoluble oxalate.” (Review, 2018) *Fermentation and germination improve nutritional value of cereals and legumes through activation of endogenous enzymes* www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6261201/ “Fermented foods such as “ogi,” produced by acid fermentation of sorghum, millet, or maize, are widely consumed in West Africa (Omemu, 2011), while “chicha” and “masa” are common fermented foods made from fermented maize widely consumed in South American countries (Chaves‐Lopez et al., 2014). In central and southern Africa, “nshima” is made from fermented maize flour. While these techniques are important in improving the shelf life, palatability, and transportability, they can also have adverse effects on the nutrient profiles of these foods. Overall, it appears that some techniques such as fermentation and malting can simultaneously reduce antinutritional factors and enhance nutrient availability (Hotz & Gibson, 2007).” “When both glucose and fructose were present during fermentation of pearl millet, microorganisms preferred glucose to fructose as a source of energy since the level of fructose remained constant. In addition, fermentation reduced starch content in millet varieties with subsequent increase in carbon dioxide and ethanol production throughout fermentation period. Moreover, pH was significantly reduced which activated phytase enzyme (El‐Hag et al., 2002).” “However, it is reported that fermenting microorganisms also uses amino acid which could lower the protein content and quality of some fermented food (Osman, 2011; Pranoto et al., 2013). Fermentation increases the digestibility of plant proteins (Ali, El‐Tinay, & Abdalla, 2003; Alka, Neelam, & Shruti, 2012; El‐Hag et al., 2002; Pranoto et al., 2013). Plant protein has poor digestibility relative to animal protein. Poor protein digestibility may cause gastrointestinal upset which may result in fecal excretion of protein. Hence, increased protein digestibility could reduce the levels of undigested proteins which can potentially cause food allergies due to poor absorption in the gut (Untersmayr & Jensen‐Jarolim, 2008). Combination of fermentation with other processing methods has more advantages. For example, fermentation followed by cooking was effective in increasing the digestibility of grain protein, bringing it nearly to the same level as meat(Khetarpaul & Chauhan, 1990; Osman, 2004; Yousif & El Tinayi, 2001, 2003) likely due to not only destruction of protease (trypsin) inhibitors (Khetarpaul & Chauhan, 1990; Osman, 2011) but also partial predigestion of grain proteins by bacteria during fermentation (Day & Morawicki, 2018). There is also reduction in tannins, oxalate, phytic acid, and carbohydrates which can complex with proteins and hence limiting accessibility by digestive enzymes (El‐Hag et al., 2002; Hassan, Yusuf, Adebolu, & Onifade, 2015; Osman, 2011; Sindhu & Khetarpaul, 2001).” Fermentation to Free up Minerals like Potassium “Minerals from plant sources have very low bioavailability because they are found complexed with nondigestible material such as cell wall polysaccharides (Torre, Rodriquez, & Saura‐Calixto, 1991) as well as phytate. Notably, potassium is integral part of phytate molecules where it is covalently bonded rendering it inaccessible by digestive enzymes. The complex matrices in which these minerals are entrapped and bonded (Figure 1) are largely responsible for their low bioavailability. Fermentation is one of the processing methods that are applied to free these complexed minerals and make them readily bioavailable (Lopez, Gordon, & Fields, 1983; Pranoto et al., 2013).”

lectins can go into your nerves and lodge in your brain, they dont simply all get removed. They can cause Parkinson's.I developed some tinnitus years ago and I freaked out and learned about the ear kidney connection, I read green juicing was a good cleanse, I was going HEAVY on juicing tons of greens, my palms instantly peeled , this has happened through the years, iv never been big on plants, always loved steak but heard steak was bad, so I ate chicken and veggies for months, got ripped, but developed health issues, then started the juicing after the tinnitus, which was partly due to being exposed to loud sounds in the schools I worked in because special needs students were always screaming, but the low fat (basically no fat) diet I had I think compromised my myelin sheath and nerves and also the juicing was bad after. I recently have had to use alot of antibiotics and noticed food reactions and peeling the skin on the palms again, I even had sauerkraut thinking it was safe to rebuild my gut and had my hands peel simply on that, I know it was that because I had nothing else but that late at night. I always related it to my kidneys, yet every doctor claims there is no issue with them, thank God it may be true that I have no kidney issues, however, I think its obvious when I react that way, my kidneys are being taxed at times. At that time I was eating chicken and lots of veggies and oatmeal, I also stopped drinking milk. I did carnivore a few months ago, took a break, im doing it again, and getting raw colostrum and grass fed food from now on. This is insane , iv learned alot over the past few months about many of these toxins, its everywhere, its ridiculous, everyone is being poisoned. I was juicing tons of celery, kale, beets, tons of plants all at once.--- Do lemons have lectins and oxylates? I have a bag but havent touched them lol

Very good interview with loads of good points. The only thing to contemplate is that the sugary or white chocolate replacement for dark chocolate is filled with soya, reportedly 95% of the world's supply is GMO, and even if wasn't normal soya creates estrogen and even without that, those confectionery bars are full of oxidizing inflammatory seed oils. As for eating clay, that's usually to remove the heavy metals, not to make up for a deficient diet.

The reversal of cancer and the healthier feeling people report when switching to a vegan diet is wholly due to limitation of linoleic acid, not the consumption of vegetables. If there is no intake of linoleic acid, inflammation dies down and autophagy can begin it's process faster. The only reason cancer is so prevalent is because autophagy is severely limited when linoleic acid is found in excess.

carnivore for 1 month DAMN i have finally found what works for me,so many problems fixed.try it i tried it 9 years ago, i had trouble with red meat and thought i was the wrong blood type (type A ) i mistakenly thought type "O" was the only type good for the carnivore diet, big mistake, i was so messed up that i did have trouble with red meat, the truth is red meat is the very best, especially the highest quality, i raised my own beef, i raised a holstein for meat(usually they are for milk) but they have excellent meat. and great bones for broth. i finally went back to carnivore after 2 years of clean water. that is really a big thing. most people have no idea what is going on with water, they may have heard of flint michigan but they don't put the pieces together. first lesson, YOU CANT TRUST THE GOVERNMENT buy 6 dollar TDS testor and see the crap you are drinking. bottom line, we need quality meat, salt and animal fat. animal based food .with some fasting on occasion,that is humans diet for eons, and no more poison. we can eat crap but it will hurt us in the long run. we have been lied to by the sources we thought we could trust.

From my research people have eaten these foods for decades, the body can cope as long as there is mineral balance, calcium will only bind to oxalates if it's not kept in solution, it needs adequate magnesium for utilisation. Potassium is critical also for calcium metabolism in many enzymes, for eg magnesium phosphate prevents calcification and plaque build up. Also fluoridated water adds to the problem. I'm a celloid therapist also biochemic practitioner too, take note of the following " Magnesium Phosphate balances calcium preventing it precipitating out of solution which can lead to the formation of gall stones, kidney stones, bladder stones, osteoporosis along with Plaque and calcification in the circulatory system" So you can eat oxalate foods as long as your taking in enough of the required minerals. The Bible says all seed bearing foods are edible, it mentions a land flowing with milk and Honey, Jesus gave fish and loaves of bread, it's deficiencies and how food is produced these days which is the problem.

Wow, this is definitely a lot, but so fascinating. Thank you both for sharing your insights! Unkas, I am so with you on the dark chocolate, and I love your daughter’s logic. 😂 I’ve recently switched over to carob powder to help reduce my cocoa intake, but it’s tough because cocoa is also an energy source for me and my treat to myself. I’m starting supplementation with nutrients I don’t get enough of to help my energy levels, so maybe that will help me. I have enjoyed switching it up with white and milk chocolate recently; it’s just tricky to find low-sugar options. Hence my recent experimentation with carob dessert recipes.😊 A couple of questions that came up for me: 1. What’s the difference between oxalate binding with minerals and conjugation? 2. Does the calcium in some almondmilk an and tofu help mitigate the level of oxalate absorbed in the body? I came across this video after viewing videos related to B1 on Elliot’s channel. I had read about oxalate toxicity on a very surface level prior, but what really caught my attention was mention of hypokalemia in connection with oxalate dumping and the level of amount of high oxalate foods in the vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free diets. I was recently diagnosed with Periodic Paralysis (Andersen-Tawil Syndrome is suspect as I have a KCNJ2 mutation) and hEDS which runs in our family. Periodic Paralysis is a group of genetic mutations cause ion channelopathies that can cause hypokalemia. I was also vegetarian for about 5 years, vegan for 3.5 of those years, and gluten free for about 10 years which overlapped with my vegetarian/vegan years. I wonder if the combination of high-oxalate foods were particularly troublesome for me due to the periodic paralysis. I used to eat SO many potatoes, cinnamon to help regulate blood sugar, occasional spinach, focused on nearly all of my grains being whole grains, tofu, almondmilk, cocoa (dark chocolate especially), SO many beans, nuts, etc., exactly for the reasons you describe. I wanted to not only be healthy, but I was also having long-standing health issues and no health insurance, so I figured I could adjust my diet to see if it helped. And it did seem to help initially. I had more energy, clearer skin. But then I started to feel worse and my health took a nose dive. I had panic-attack like episodes, felt on-edge all the time, heart palpitations. I took nutritional yeast to make sure I was getting enough B vitamins and apple cider vinegar to help with my digestion. I started having really severe episodes of muscle weakness, arrhythmias, tachycardia, developed POTS, intense migraines. I know now that B12 and apple cider vinegar likely caused drastic shift in my potassium levels leading to the drastic increase in muscle weakness, on top of the stress I was dealing with in not knowing what was going on with my health. I gradually came out of being vegetarian and gluten free. I had eaten dairy all the time when I was young, but it seemed I could really digest dairy or red meat after being vegan. Nonfat Greek yogurt I could tolerate, so that was my starting point. Non-gluten free oatmeal also became a go-to. Then it was baby steps from there. Under physician guidance, I added magnesium, Vitamin D, and later potassium chloride to my regimen. The potassium chloride helps significantly. I suspect the magnesium and Vitamin D too, but that it’s in a more subtle way. It’s been about 7 years since I started reincorporating dairy and meat back into my diet, and I’m in a MUCH better place than I was though I still have digestive (GI wants to test for SIBO and do an endoscopy and has suggested low FODMAP) and neurological issues I’m hoping I can address. I switched nutrition apps recently and the new one allows me to see where I’m not meeting the RDA for specific vitamins and minerals including B1, B5, folate, copper, zinc, etc.. My current approach is to start supplementing to see if it improves my symptoms. I have noticed that certain high oxalate foods like spinach and quinoa, my body doesn’t seem to do well with. Other foods, like potatoes, tofu, and almondmilk, I seem to do well with but I DO have to combine high-carb foods with protein and/or fats to prevent blood sugar crashes and severe potassium shifts. This seems to be a thing in Periodic Paralysis. I really appreciate the clarification that Elliot provides at the very end that this is not for everyone and how it’s all very hypothetical. If anything I’ve learned there’s a lot of wisdom in “Everything in moderation,” and “Be not extreme in any of your ways,” unless off course there’s an allergy or something similar. There’s so much we don’t know, but it sounds like this is a start into an area that we’ll get much better clarity in the years to come.

I know this is an OLD YT video but I am deep diving AGAIN my Ketovore lifestyle since 2019 that cured my "arthritis" but now having sporadic knuckle pain and stiffness in hands. From this and Sally Norton, it seems that Oxalate dumping can be a multi years and cyclical process even after eliminating almost all oxalate. You cannot remove all because our body makes a little. I had cycled off of 2-3d of high intensity cycling in 2022 to spend more time with my 15yo son whom is a competitive golfer before he starts driving and High School. Those months of no aerobic exercise and sweating really caught up to me. After just 4 days of 50+ minute zone 2-3 exercising and associated very hot South, I believe I have sweated out oxalate via skin (my eyes have had strange mucous for months without resolve too). Now my knuckles no longer hurt and swelling has reduced, I am having normal tears in eyes, hands are slightly stiff but 75% back to normal. DO NOT skip over the need to sweat oxalate out as the skin, kidney and eyes seem to be common pathways.....and it can occur for YEARS. Just ask Sally.

His diet is mainly rice,beans,meats,pampkim, potatoes and cassava...bread,cake, and orange and one banana every day,that's it, and he doesn't drink not even one liter of water per day,,the most couple glasses a day. Now I ask, is it the 2 little water a day really necessary for everyone?? Maybe not. He goes to bed around 8 PM and up by 6 AM ,have a few short naps during the day. His muscles are hard as rocks, doesn't have many gray hair,not too many wrinkles, ( maybe because he used to eat a lot of pig skin, tons of collagen into it) he smoked until close to his 70s, used to drink hard alcohol until close to 65s and yet very healthy. Has more health then many of us who excercises, eat "healthy " avoid sugar,avoid too much fat,avoid too much carbs,avoid too much salt,eat organic, avoid too much pollution, practice meditate,yoga, positive affirmation, detox this, detox that,cleansing parasites, etc.....yet we are not so healthy.

this is just part of it, the plants have many things that cause trouble, we know a few, lectins, polyphenols,tannins,arsenic and more. the bottom line is what works for you. how hard is it to try carnivore for 2 months,you will be able to fast easily too, because meat makes you full .it really works, i am making my meat cookies, i buy the cheapest hamburger ,add a strip of bacon and cheese on that. i eat them whenever i get hungry which is not very often, the only time i really get hungry is when i cheat and eat some carb or sugar. if i stay away from carbs i can go a long time without getting hungry ,AMAZING i never thought i was addicted to sugar, I WAS ! every problem is fixed now. meat and salt (clean water ) saved my life !! 60 yr old guy ! huge libido WOW

I think Sally Norton has mentioned that some plants can shoot/spit oxalates at people and touching some plants can poison you with oxalates. Any info on houseplants which may cause oxalate problems for us?

Dieffenbachia, aka dumb cane. My poor silly cat chewed on it, and was drooling and foaming, and kept her mouth open for at least a day, and then was rather miserable for a while. Look it up!

are there oxylates or lectins in maraijuana oil? Iv noticed I tent to twitch when I consume it. I also get phlegm . I also feel like I get bloated ,But I havent found information on this.Wiz kalifa, the rapper, mentioned on the Joe Rogan podcast, he is allergic to certain weed, and makes and only smokes his own. EDIT- yes there are oxylates in marijuana, I wonder if smoking instead of oils removes the issue.

Once you have been damaged it lowers your tolerance for any of this stuff. What I could handle at one time I can no longer tolerate it because of the deep damage that my body has endured for far too many years. I can't even use herbs anymore (as an herbalist, that is tough for me); but thank goodness for homeopathy.

I'm very curious about all these oxalate plants and herbs etc....in India people are mainly vegetarian consume high amounts of cinamon, turmeric etc and they must be doing something we are not,and they dont seam to have oxalates problems. Why is that? What are we missing??

Biological and bacterial diversity. We are not all the same. Our environment shapes the flora in the gut. A person living in Mumbai is going to have significantly different gut flora than someone living in Oslo.

kiwi has an proteolytic enzyme called actinidine, and that's what causing the abrasive sensation, same with pineapple, espacially when it's not ripe enough
@EONutrition
@EONutrition 4 года назад
Hi! Thanks for telling me about that. There is conflicting information about what causes it. Here is a reference from a paper: Watanabe and Takahashi (1998) found that kiwifruit contain total oxalates in the range of 10.1- 29.9 mg/100 g FW. These oxalates are largely found as calcium oxalate raphides (Rassam and Laing, 2005), which can have a harsh effect in the mouth but are not absorbed in the intestinal tract.

Been CARNIVORE for eight months. Plantar fasciitis for almost 2 years. I think they're linked.. I developed the PF when I was in México staying at a place that had a star fruit tree in the back yard. Ate one a day for weeks and then mysteriously develiped WICKED PF... It stayed for 1.5 years and then left but shifted to the other foot! So now I am pretty sure that years of green smoothies have probably caused all this pain. Since no one knows the reason for PF, like many ailments, I'm going to hasten to guess it's oxalates. My issue is that I dunt know how to get rid of them slowly
