Betty Crocker's Cooky Book Spritz Cookies
1c butter or margarine
1/2c sugar
1 egg
1/2tsp salt
1tsp flavoring (I used vanilla and almond)
2 1/4c all purpose flour
heat oven to 400. Mix butter, sugar, egg, salt, and flavoring thoroughly. Work in flour. Using 1/4 of the dough at a time, force dough through cookie press onto ungreased baking sheet in desired shapes. Bake 6 to 9 minutes, or until set but now brown. Makes approximately 5 dozen cookies.

Just ordered this after making a bunch of Christmas cookies using a vintage aluminum cookie press with a screw-type knob. It was hard on my hands and finicky to get consistently-sized cookies. I'm so looking forward to simply clicking a lever. p.s. Spritz crackers with sharp cheddar are the best!

I have been married for 55 years and my Mother gave me that cookbook, the original Betty Crocker Cooky Book along with cookie sheets, etc. That is also the book my Mom used along with other cookie books.. My recipe for spritz out of that book copyright 1963 calls for 3 egg yolks not a whole egg. So I wonder if over the years they changed the recipe? I wanted a review of that cookie press, so thank you because I needed a new one. A little tip to get the spritz to stick to the pan if you think it is too warm. Take it to the sink, run some cold water over the bottom, dry and continue, that usually works without having to refrigerate the whole pan. Much faster too😉

Hard to pick a favorite Christmas cookie, but I guess decorated cut out sugar cookies are my favorite just because of all the memories I have of making them as a kid. I also think of how hard it was to decide which one you wanted, even though they all tasted the same. 😅

First off, I have to apologize - I recommended Spritz cookies and the Mirro Cookie Press on another video that I watched before making my way to this one. I'm glad you've tried both the Spritz and a cookie press. I grew up eating and making Spritz cookies, only at Christmas, and used the tree, wreath, and a poinsettia disc (I don't think you have that one). Your hints and recommendations are excellent. Happiest of holidays upcoming (a year later). P. S. Vanilla is blasphemy! ;-)

I love this cookie press and have used it every holiday since I purchased it in the States 7 years ago. The Gingerbread Spritz Cookies make beautiful, professional looking gifts for teachers, friends and family and are always appreciated. My tip would be NOT to refrigerate the dough, unless you live in a very hot/humid climate as harder dough puts too much stress on the plastic casing - I've broken two this way. OXO have replaced one and covered postage to Australia which was great as it's become part of my annual holiday ritual.

Oh my . . . choosing one favorite? I love the taste and the nostalgia of cut out, frosted sugar cookies. As Susn commented, deciding which cookie to eat is part of the memory. The cookie we make most consistently is a peanut butter blossom. It's our "go-to" contribution when church or other organizations request home baked goods. BTW, they MUST be made with chocolate stars in the center. No pointy kisses allowed! Ha! Ha! Thanks for the review on the press. Thanks as well for sharing your tips - very helpful.. I wonder how many of us are now considering an OXO brand press! I've tried my mom's and my mother-in-law's press. There were some challenges!

I have a Williams-Sonoma spritz cookie kit which has sat in my cupboard for years and been used exactly once! It worked well, I think, it's just a bit of hassle. I have that book (I'm on my second copy as my first disappeared somewhere between my mom and my aunt, lol). My favorite cookie would be a tie between the oatmeal molasses cookie from that book (it's in the historical cookies section) and the drop cookie recipe from that book just because it is so versatile (there are so many variations to that one recipe. It's brilliant!) As for the cookie press, I do want one, but it's on the "when I have time to bake for pleasure" list of kitchen gadgets. I haven't enough time to keep up with the normal cooking and baking (oh the joys of a multi allergy household, lol. Convenience foods mean "I made this on my last day off and froze it"). Cookies are a special occasion thing right now.

I usually use the Betty Crocker spritz recipe when I make my spritz cookies. I use both a sawa 2000 and a mercado cookie press. I have a Pampered Chef gun type as well, which makes larger and a nice variety of discs, however, I couldn't get that press to work well at all. Oddly, I find the heart difficult for many presses. Yours looks better than any of my heart recipes. I general, I would recommend using the recipe in each press, but in fact, I use the Betty Crocker one. Sometimes, I spice it up for eggnog flavored or gingerbread spices is an easy fix.
