It DOES have to do with the fact that in a very roundabout, psychoanalytical way, "Pique Dame" is in many respects an autobiographical opera, and that is one of the reasons why it is so great! "The Queen Of Spades " has a lot to do with psychoanalysis , it's much closer to Dostoevsky , than Pushkin in its spirit. Valery Gergiev called this opera a young sister of "Crime and Punishment". And what did you mean by original stage directions ?
