In the end, I think hickok says it best: you like 9mm then the P38 is your baby. You like .45 ACP, the 1911a1 will serve you well. Neither is better. They are both amazing firearms that could hold their own against almost anything made today. Thanks for the frank discussion!
@mver191
@mver191 5 лет назад
1911a1 was by far the best handgun though until the p38 came out 30 years later. And still the p38 wasn't next gen or better, just a handgun on the same level.

@@mver191 I always wondered why Germans never adopted the .45acp since the p38 only holds 8+1, the 1911 7+1. I guess since the 9mm luger had a faster speed it was more advantageous since they used 9mm in their smg

I own both a 1911 and a P-38 (1942, by Mauser). The P-38 is so well designed, to fit in your hand, it's a true pleasure to shoot, and the de-cock safety, and the 'chambered round' indicator are great features. I'll take it over the .45.

I served my time as a Panzer Grenadier, my side arm was the P01, a modern version of the P38. The P01/P38 was by far, the much better pistol and would take any 9mm ammo from ball to P+ and did not miss a beat. By the way the Luger P08 wasn't that fragile, just expensive to make. Think difference in the late 1930's is about $10 more expensive in your money.

Just bought one. It's marked AC 42 which means it's made by Walther in 1942... it's a bit unique though because the finish on the gun resembles the earlier pre-war models as opposed to the more crude finish on wartime productions. Apart from being fully blued and polished, it also has these really redish/brown grips which I have not seen before. It's marked with all the right stamps and as far as I can tell it is all original finish.

Soldiers were first taught to shoot the 1911 with the middle finger and point with the index. However the issue of soldiers pushing the lock pin while firing caused the change to the index finger. Just a little history, love your channel.

P-38 all the way. I love me some 1911, but my favorite pistol from my collection is a Spreewerke P-38 made just before the invasion of Berlin. You can tell because you can easily see all the machine marks. It's such a piece of history, a weapon of a (very rightly) dying part of German history. It was taken off of very young German officer who surrendered during the invasion of Berlin. I've never fired that pistol, but the first pistol I fired that was not a .22 was a P1.

S&W borrowed a lot from the P38 Walther and the 1911 to create their model 39 & 59 series in the 1950s. In fact P38 magazines fit in a S&W 39 and only need a small square hole cut into to it to function in the S&W 39.

Both pistols were ahead of their time. The 1911 was one of the first pistols with a slide, it may have been the first to have been adopted by any major military(Not sure). Though the fact that it's a 100 year old design that is still used and loved by many people speaks for itself.

The P.38 has a great advantage. You can bear it with a round in the chamber, uncocked, safety off. Nothing can happen because the firing pin is retained by the trigger safety device. To fire you only pull the trigger. And it has a little pin above the hammer that indicates whether there is a round in the chamber.

Jeff Hardymon actually it isnt much different from the 1911 if you lived in that time period. soldiers wouldnt just drop the magazines on the ground anyway as they needed it later, so a mag change on the 1911 tskes about the same time. the heel release on the p.38 exists to encourage keeping the magzine and not giving the illusion of it being discardable.

I carry a 1980 P1 variant and while a heel release would lose in a range competition, it's feels pretty intuitive once you learn them. It's fully reliant on your support hand, however the nature of it's placement means you have positive feedback to feel when it's locked in. So from it's pointer grip stance, to it's mag release; it's really a testament to how guns then were designed around being a physical extension of the shooter. It's crazy how we went from that to Glock, modern (brick on a stick) designs.

According to Evan Marshall, there is a 1% difference in stopping power in the two cartridges when using ball ammo. So basically, no difference at all really. So Jeff Cooper was full of it when he used to say: "they all fall to hardball." Personally, I would rather have a Browning Hi-Power than either of these.
@GreatMercenary
@GreatMercenary 8 лет назад
+LK Campbell Yup, 9mm vs. .45 ACP, hollow point vs. FMJ, if the gun works and the shooter is trained with that firearm, then that's all that matters in my opinion. People worry too much about the little things that only differ a percent or two.
@arcflashed
@arcflashed 8 лет назад
+LK Campbell I carry .9mm because the guns are more concealable. .45 is more effective. But more capacity in .9mm, concealment ability, less recoil. Makes the 9 a good choice. And a 9mm 147 grn HST is very effective. But.. compared to the .45 HST 230 grn the .45 wins every time.
@roberth.goddardthefatherof6376
from a Kinetic energy standpoint yes, both have ~480 Joules of kinetic energy BUT the .45 has alot more momentum and copper,lead mass to rip bigger wound channels the momentum of the .45 is 3.8Kg-m/s compared to just 2.74Kg-m/s for the 9mm. I think that Damage to the target is an aggregate balance between Kinetic energy and Momentum and they both have the Same kinetic energy (1:1) but the .45 has 40% (1.4:1) more momentum so 1.4/1 = 1.4 so the .45 does 40% more damage overall.

I find the P38 to be easier to unjam in case of a bad round. The opening on top is much larger. There are also 2 slide recoil springs (one on each side) versus a single spring in the 1911. I don't know if that's a plus or minus.

This is about couple of classics indeed. I think it is a matter of personal taste. Both pistols are legends among handguns.

As usual, a great review of a couple of classics. Pardon my bias, P38/P1 was a great handgun but IMHO cannot compete with the 1911. I love my 1911s.

I prefer handguns with a little more history. I personally concealed carry a .54 caliber 1742 flintlock for self defense.

+Granny Torrelli - I had a golden rule about hand guns, any pistol I bought no matter how big or small I would conceal carry at a minimal once..... Then I got some black powder civil war replica revolvers from Pietta and broke my rule... Some things should just be left for fun range visits and homage to the past :P

The P38 had so many new design features. Like Hickok said the Beretta 92 still had a lot of them. It was very innovative.

+sgthl only in some aspects. There are many many test, inhuman though they may be, that revolutionized mechanical engineering, weaponry, and even Medicinal/Medical. The world came to many realizations very rapidly from their tinkerings. How they figured things out though is just a terrifying thought. One has to ask themselves if it was the work of genius, or in reality sheer dumb luck at another's expense.
@Slking507
@Slking507 8 лет назад
I guess you could always say that many of their findings were out of necessity so that they could complete their task. Invention is the offspring of one's own needs, or in Hitler's case, wants.

Both pistols the P38 as well as the 1911 are superb sidearms. My personal choice from the point of a European is that the 9mm Para rounds are big enough and powerful enough. Federal Pistol Target Shooting competition is mostly restricted to 7.65mm Para and 9mm Para and never met a fellow shooter who was moaning regarding the magazine release, despite the magazin release button is the slightly faster way for dropping the empty magazine by using only one hand.
@hiramnoone

P38 or P1 would be my choice, primarily because of their much better sights.
