PA Deer Camp 2023 - Out of the Fog

It late in to the Countries deer season, yes it's finally here, time, time for PA Deer Camp 2023! Black Friday normally means shopping and sales, but to the PA deer hunter it means time to get to Camp and be ready for Opening Day of the Pennsylvania Deer season that is just one day away.
As always I lover loaded the Grand Cherokee Trail-hawk with all kinds of supplies, some I used, a lot I took home, but it;s always better to have more than not enough. Was there for 11 days this year, 7 days for our normal Deer Camp, and 3 1/2 for my solo time there after the guys left and then returned. Mike "The Chairman", Steve "CampCook", Eric "Medical Man" and of course myself, Tom "WhiteRook85" all made the journey up to our Camp near Wellsboro PA. Shawn ‪@sintax77‬ could not make the trip since he is out West living the RV life. Next year for sure, he promised.
This year just Mike and I were there for Opening weekend, but unfortunately the Chairman (Mike) had to head back on Sunday evening. My solo part starts then, but that's another video, check that out in the Solo Time video.
Good food abounded as always, Pizza and wings on Friday night, a massive rib-eye on Saturday, Eric's bison chili the following Friday, then some more of Tony's Pizza, Stromboli, and more wings. Cook wrapped up Sunday with a very tender Picanha.
Good Old Fashions flowed this year, as well as some good beer.
As always, something that seems like it will never get here, then before you know it it's unfortunately it's over.
Eric had a doe tag, and saw some, but they never presented and ethical shot.
Grab a beverage, and a snack, sit back and enjoy!
A true Deer Camp is about; having a great time with friends and family, building memories, and that keeps you coming back year after year. If a buck happens (and one of these years!!) that great also.
Laughing and ball busting seem to reign supreme as always, one of the best things about Camp life.

I have been watching your videos I think since 2015. Look forward to it every year. I miss all the Guys I used to hunt with in Pennsylvania. Some of the greatest times of my life were spent at deer camp.

You are right, just the hunting part wouldn't be very exiting unless we had non stop action. Another reason I call it Deer Camp, many, many people haven't, or never will get that Camp experience and not know how fun the whole package can be. Take care!

I couldn't agree more. I am no veteran, but have been challenged with a disability my whole life. Dad and the uncles are gone now, so I too can't get into the woods now. These videos are so valuable! Thank you!

Little late here,my wife and i wrapping Christmas gifts, the 24th. You guy's had Tony's, we always have homemade on Christmas eve. Granddaughter ,my daughter and son in law be by shortly. Happy holidays Vernon, sorry for the late reply back. We have pizza on Christmas eve, a tradition going back to the 80's when I worked shift work and wasn't home on Christmas eve, or Christmas Day. Was a small sacrifice to pull in some good money for the family. Hope you had a great Christmas, and Happy New Year to you and the family.

Deer camp appears to be a nice relaxation place. Looks like no shells necessary. Just booze, cards, and buddies I guess I'm spoiled that deer camp is all that and a major locker plant. We can see 20 deer a day and think it was slow

Horse Soldier just broke ground in Somerset Ky, (my home town) for a new Distillery. When open it will be the newest member of the legendary Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Very nice Bourbon indeed..... Love the WhiteRook85 and Syntax77 Videos.!

Another great deer camp video! I look forward to this video all year. Enjoyed the bourbon stuff with the Chairman. Those old fashions looked really good. Too bad no deer this year, I really thought you guys were going to get one. We only got a doe this year, but were lucky enough to also get a bear, so that was exciting. Another great (scattered) video. I am fortunate to have my own place and have great guys to hunt with, yes we have been successful but the company we keep there is what makes it worthwhile. This was my 51st year hunting Forest county and I have photo albums and wall prints that I look back and laugh/cry how young we were and who we have lost, so it was cool seeing you post ten year ago pics. Not to beat that dead horse but I truly miss the Monday start. Continue the good work, I enjoy watching the old and new videos during the long winter months.

I do have a book of our past hunts that included Sr. As far as Monday goes, I know exactly what you mean, I could even go with Sunday as the opener, if so I would have brought up my leaf blower and cleared out my lanes and the landing area of leaves. @@whiterook85 we were successful harvesting 4 bucks (all public land) and 2 doe. I really enjoyed it as I took a 9 point during archery, was able to kick back and help the successful guys. Yep Sunday would work for me too, our tree stands are set but most of the guys don’t get up till that day making it tough thankfully we use hunt stand sorta have to as we are back in at 2-4 miles. Continue the work live watching the cabin change. Happiest holidays to you and yours.

Keep up the deer camp message and what it,s all about. Our camp in Centre County was built in 1934 and our traditions continue the best we.can do. Lost allot with the Saturday opener.

Thanks John, we are all pretty old-school when it comes to camp. Love the traditions that are getting lost as the years pass. The Saturday opener is not my favorite, but we deal with it the best we can. It did help quicken the pass of the Deer Camp, that comradery part if fading.

Was surprised the dutch oven was on tap again this trip. Those steaks came out pretty good. They say you can eat the fat, which I did some of, but a little too much to have all of it. Nice to see Eric also, hopefully he will be up more often.

Tom, took me a few days to get a night to finally watch this long awaited tradition of Deer Camp! Always need a full iced cup of bourbon with no distractions to enjoy it right. I think I’ve told you I start watching the “Deer Camp” series from 2013 to current starting in about September. They are all great. Another great video you’ve put together….it was great to see the Chairman that first weekend and cool he’s enjoying bourbon now. Hope he liked the Rabbit hole! Also nice to see Eric back at the cabin…hopefully his back continues to improve! He’s too young to have lingering issues already. Great food, good friends, fun poker game going on too. Looks like the new deer blind is pretty comfortable and the buddy heater going must make a nice difference….oh and that coffee in the blind…my favorite cups of coffee are drank from a tree stand. Thanks for the shout out to Dads flying crew and for the Blue Pot Cafe in remembering those who have all served our country. Already looking forward to the Spring Trip. Have a great Christmas and I’m sure we’ll touch base back and forth along the way. Congrats to you and your brother on a matching pair of 5 pointers! Sounds like it was a special year for you both to have the North Carolina trip together. My fondest memories of growing up was deer camp - better than Christmas. My father snd uncles and other older camp members are gone now snd the years have created changes and the start of new snd different deer season traditions. But your videos remind me of those earlier times. Deer camp is always a special time and place regardless of whether anything is hanging from the nest pole or not. Merry Christmas!

Very enjoyable video. Shawn was absent but he had made the N.C hunt so we shall cut him a little slack. Great to see Eric back in action. Campcook now has brawny arms like Charles Bronson and managed to pass the Chairman taste test with his dish which is no easy feat. The Chairman " are we rolling " then launched right into a full blown uncensored RITP's for the camera. Nice ! lol Sheriff Jim got a dandy buck , congrats to him and that mountain buck was a good one too. Thanks for the video. I will be watching it a few times for sure. nice, as obviously you all had a good time. Beer is always unloaded first at camp and is priority number one especially tuxedo. brings me back to my western PA days growing up. Anyway I have been going through my challenge coins I was giving over my years of service looking for double (which I have) to send your way. No stories as I been there got the tee shirt way to many times.

Good times and excellent memories Rook! Look forward to seeing what you guys are up to every year! We hunted a mountain over from you Thursday -Sat. Same result and we saw very few deer this season. No mast crop hurt. Interestingly, there were a lot of locals out hunting, more than in any recent memory. Seemed to have the deer moving to different places. Anyway, our camp had a great time as well and enjoyed our time together and in the woods!

Great video as always Tom !! You are right about the size of the deer when hunting !! Every deer that you have the privilege to harvest is a trophy no matter what size it is !! That animal gave it's life for you to feed your family , and that is why we hunt ! Also just being with friends and family at deer camp is the best . We will never be there in that moment again !! I've been waiting for you to post, as always very enjoyable and thank you for sharing. Great to see all of you even if sporadic or not everyone at same time. Whatever kind/type of meat the cook skewed and grilled look amazing. As for me DE season didn't harvest anything. Opening day in NY I was alone for the morning hunt, pretty cold strong constant wind. Afternoon hunt I prepared for a long "polar" sit. I had on everything I own lol. Was in my stand five minutes and a nice eight pointer showed/presented himself. Its very steep terrain where I hunt, so after dragging that deer for sometime, sweating to death lol, I'd swear he was an elephant. Out of nowhere my brother emerged, I was so glad to see him. We got him back to the camp etc, a little later our cousin arrived. It was nice to harvest a decent buck, but the real thing I cherish is sharing it with my brother and our close cousin. Endless laughs & digs etc, there's nothing like deer camp.

Been watching your videos for years…..Since the deer are eating all that clover up before season I’d suggest planting some turnips….you will get a cover crop and the deer will dig the turnips up through the winter time…..Might help keep the deer on top of that mountain…..I also hunt in Delaware near the Taber state forest outside of Harrington…..good luck the rest of the way….and enjoyed the video.

Just saw your video. Looks like you have a good crew. We have a deer camp upstate NY and we are still in season (Muzzle Loader). I personally look forward to time at deer camp all year long! As I explained to one of my brothers. There’s much more to deer camp than harvesting a deer. Now don’t get me wrong we all want to fill our tag but the camaraderie, good food, great times around the fire and even chasing mice out of the camper is all part of it. Memories of deer camp over the years are priceless especially as the next generation starts to come up and hunt. Thanks for sharing your experience through this video and best of luck to you guys in the future!

Hello Dan, thanks for stopping by. Tony's is a very good spot for really an out of the way town in the middle of up state PA. The Chairmans foray into bourbon has paid some dividends. Him mixing up the old fashions was pretty nice. Wait for the solo video where he is making fun of himself and his critics while getting ready to mix one up. The guys just don't have time for it, and they don't have the equipment besides Eric. The more I hear about the modern crossbows taking the deer out, the less I like them. I think they need their own 'short' season. Too much like a modern rifle. Thanks for the well wishes, same to you and the family. Stay warm up there, heck I just had to cut the grass a few days back.
