Hi Kris, Thank you for attaching the 2/20/2020 House Fish and Game Committee meeting video. Randy Santucci's arguments were spot on.

Yes, I was impressed with Mr. Santucci's testimony. I thought it was well-prepared and thoughtfully delivered.

Hi Kris, It was great to meet and talk to you briefly at the January meeting. I see that you have joined HuntingPA.com. Why don't you inform them of your great RU-vid gig? The information you and the others present is well done, valuable and timely. Many on the hunting forum will benefit from the presentations. By the way, this April's meeting should be equally informative. It's being held on a Monday and Tuesday. So maybe you can't make it. Take care. Bob

Thanks Bob, it was great meeting and talking with you as well. We were beginning to see quite a bit of traffic coming to this video from HuntingPA.com and decided to track it back to the source. I look forward to attending both April meetings. For those interested - www.pgc.pa.gov/InformationResources/Pages/Upcoming-Events.aspx

Kris, thanks for putting this together. The biggest thing I got from the presentation on license sales spiking on Black Friday,,, of course they would have too. I mentioned in one of my deer camp videos from this past year was how busy Wellsboro was on Friday due to the fact that you HAD to arrive Friday if you wanted to hunt the opener on Saturday. This is also the case if you didn't purchase your license in advance you had to buy it Friday. You also posted the information on the survey about 75 to 85 percent of people enjoy the "social interaction", that is DEER CAMP. Living in a small state (Delaware), you don't see that, 99% of us hunt from our houses, not camps. You may get together with friends, but it is not the same as being there with them for 3 or 4 days. I know I'm a traditionalist, but PA don't screw up a good thing.

You got it, Tom. The findings that were presented seemed more of an attempt to rationalize the license sales improvement as a direct result of the move of opening day. After the meetings, I’ve had a few discussions with Coren about licensing data, more specifically, the data which wasn’t presented that would yield greater clarity. PGC should easily be able to pull first-time and lapsed hunter license sales figures from their PALS licensing system. Coren acknowledged but indicated it would take a significant amount of time to pull and analyze the data. I’d have to think a simple 1:1 bump of CID #’s against 2 variables (2018 vs 2019 or 2017 vs 2019, etc) could be done rather efficiently. In doing so, we’d clearly be able to see the impact of new people brought into the sport, as well as people that haven’t bought a license in X number of years that found something worthwhile in 2019 to come back, whether it be the Saturday opener, twice as much opportunity to hunt bears, improved health issue, whatever the case. It’ll be interesting to see where a lot of this goes during the April meetings which is when seasons and bag limits will be finalized.

Great video. Enjoy your hearing your perspective on the Saturday opener discussion. Couldn't agree more about the reason license sales were up was because of the bear hunting opportunity. The fact the most of the extra licenses that were sold in 2018 hunting season were non residents should've been a dead giveaway that was the reason. Instead they just made it out to be all from the Saturday opener ! Its crazy that they can't see that. And I don't blame that dude for resigning because of it. I look forward to seeing your next video about the April pgc meeting about making the hunting seasons

Monday opener works best for me. Saturday opener this year was very quiet, no shooting. I started with mobility issues this season and lost my hunting area, private land, landowner passed away and new landowner posted it and won't give permission.No deer this year, last year I got two doe and a buck. Hunting license sales? It's not considered PC to kill animals anymore, people are paranoid of firearms. Ask any organization how easy it is to find volunteers, the interest is waning.

Sorry to hear about the health and hunter access issues, Tim. Fortunately, it does appear more and more people are looking for ways to eat healthier and source their own food. Efforts like QDMA's Field to Fork campaign are a great reflection of how hunting is a viable way to accomplish both. It's a platform that could certainly stand to have broader support.

I would also like to see an economic impact study done by someone other than the PGC. I too hunt north central PA and I’m sure this negatively affected businesses that really depend on the money. People aren’t going out to restaurants and bars when they have to get up for hunting the next day. Also I took a ride around my area on Sunday afternoon and a lot of camps were already empty. With the Monday opener people had all weekend to patronize the local businesses. Whiterook 85 I totally agree with you on Friday license purchases as you used to have Friday Saturday and Sunday.

There's actually a House Game and Fisheries Committee Hearing being held February 20th in Washington County scheduled by state Rep. Bud Cook, secretary of the Tourism and Recreational Development Committee. Should be interesting to follow. Check out the pair of articles below which were published in The Citizens’ Voice newspaper in Wilkes-Barre, PA by journalist, Tom Venesky veneskyoutdoors.com/deer-season-opener-to-be-debated-in-hearing-before-house-committee/ veneskyoutdoors.com/saturday-deer-opener-not-good-for-some-businesses/

NCPA Outdoors I’ve sent a letter to Reps Owlett and Causer. I also told them feel free to forward and/or use them as they see fit. Hopefully they pass them along. Thanks for the links you sent, interesting to see how some people still want to deny or twist the story on the economic loss.

NCPA Outdoors Thanks for the link! Very interesting. Only one of the presenters had their facts together. The other two just use hearsay to try to make their point. They claim to have talked to people and taken polls but no proof or documentation to support their claims is offered. The story they are trying to sell about kids not having time to go hunting doesn’t sit well with me. While in high school I missed days for BOTH Pennsylvania and NJ deer seasons. Why, because it was something I worked for and my parents REWARDED me by allowing me to go if my grades justified it. My kids both missed school for hunting and I would do it all over again. It’s obvious the PGC is only interested in a license sale for a statistic and whether you hunt or not doesn’t matter. Also the adults time off issue? Plan vacation for deer season the same as you plan any other vacation. Most if not all of their arguments don’t hold much water to me.
@NCPAOutdoors
@NCPAOutdoors 4 года назад
No matter which day of the week the season opens, it will always be convenient for some and inconvenient for others, everyone understands and can appreciate that. In the beginning, it was suggested the Saturday start would better assist college kids and young adults just entering the workforce who either couldn't afford to miss classes or didn't have seniority/vacation time from their job. How many young adults just starting out are able to land a Monday - Friday job? Most are nights, weekends, split- or rotating shifts. And with so many having to work multiple jobs, weekends off aren't even in the picture.

Im all about tradition. I feel atleast in my opinion camp life is just as important as getting out in the woods. Since i started hunting in 1984 nothing got me more excited then going to the camp with family and friends. Having Saturday and sunday to enjoy the camp life is all that really matters to me. This yr i did go out on opening day but quickly decided this just don't feel right and actually went back to camp where more than half of our guy's were. The Saturday opener to me just dont feel right. I also saw the negative impact on the local economy in north central pa.

Perhaps a split opener - similar to trout season - will be an option for 2020-21. Commissioners have told me this was an option they were considering last April. Obviously it never came to fruition, likely because of the bungled vote that occurred.

Video from the March 3, 2020 PAGC delivery of its 2018-2019 Annual report to the General Assembly before the House Game and Fisheries Committee. Commissioners in attendance; Charlie Fox, Michael Mitrick, Stanley Knick. www.pahousegop.com/Video/Game-and-Fisheries www.pahousegop.com/embed/24543/Informational-meeting-on-Pennsylvania-Game-Commission-Annual-Report- Cliff notes - Executive Director Bryan Burhans prepared testimony through 18 minutes. Rep. Maloney; The recent audit, habitat, CWD at 25 minutes. Rep. Mullery; Doe tags, Coronavirus at 38 minutes. Rep. Warner; Proposed concurrent buck/doe season, Saturday opener economic impact at 45 minutes. Rep. Neilson; Game Lands, Sunday hunting, Dove hunting, Elk reproduction rate at 54 minutes. Rep. Mehaffey; Saturday opener options, Sunday hunting, CWD in Elk herd, Revenues and investments at 65 minutes. Rep. Jozwiak; CWD, Blue Marsh Lake small game hunting, Ticks, Prescribed fire, Rabies in racoons at 78 minutes. Rep. Cook; Nothing at 87 minutes. Rep. Gleim; Saturday opener economic impact, reserve fund at 89 minutes. Rep. Delloso; CWD, Coyotes, Bear at 92 minutes. Rep. Maloney; Buildings, Vehicles, Saturday opener, Coyotes, Concurrent seasons, at 97 minutes. Rep. Gillespie; Bald Eagle lead poisoning at 101 minutes. Interesting takeaway at 56 minutes when Rep. Nielson spoke of buying his first ever license courtesy of PAGC Legislative Liason Josh Zimmerman, "I have my first hunting license this year, it's up in my office. I wish I'd thought to bring it down, I was going to bring that strip of all these yellow tags I don't know what to do with, I do have it, I lost a couple. . . I can't use it in Philadelphia county because I assume Philadelphia county is the only county in the state without hunting and gaming lands?" He later piggybacked on the discussion of lead poisoning and the need to educate people about buying non-toxic ammunition offering the suggestion of printing something to that effect on licenses when they're printed, "That'd be a good thing to put on my tag even though I don't buy bullets for those tags."

Keep the seasons the way there where , above I-80 the deer are making a great come back ,we don't need Buck and doe in at the same time , all the game commission wants is money money , they don't give a shit about the deer bear or turkey
@NCPAOutdoors
@NCPAOutdoors 4 года назад
Buck and doe concurrency may prove to be a double-edged sword for the PGC. It may provide hunters a better opportunity to harvest an animal if they have limited time to spend in the woods, but it will result in significantly fewer overall antlerless allocations throughout the state which means less money in license sales...
