CBC News - Feb 2009 If this is what had to happen for BNL move forward then so be it. I personally, would rather see them part ways than see the band break up altogether. Just means we get twice the music to listen too.
I was on the "Ships and Dips" cruise with them. He and his girlfriend were all coked-out the whole time. We knew it was the end after watching him interact with the band for a whole week.
This is still so painful. BNL is still very deeply imbedded in my life and heart. I never really cared about their private lives. Their music has always been magic. Scary intelligent folks.
Not really. Ed was always the leader. Wrote most of the songs and nearly all the hits. Arranged the live shows. Handled the business. And 10+ years on they are better than ever.
I saw the band in concert over the past summer and felt sorry for them. The magic was gone, yet it was clear they were trying hard to look like they were still having fun. I was once a huge BNL fan (and still like them), but they are a shell of the band they once were without Steven Page.
I wonder if occasionally Steven hums to himself, 🎵I never thought there'd be days like this, there was always someone at my door🎵 🎵I never thought I would ever miss, and the crowd would always holler for more🎵 🎵But now it seems all the people want is what I used to be🎵 🎵And every time I try to do something new, all they want is 1993...🎵
They just don't have the same sound since Page left. The resonance of Page's voice made thier harmonies fantastic. And its missing, along with the humor of the banter between songs in the live shows.
Saw BNL live last just last week... the humor of the banter between songs at the shows is still there. It's just not between Page and Robertson anymore
This is the classic case of the coked out girlfriend continuously telling the guy that he's "the real star" then breaking up the band so she can manipulate him sans interference...and he fell for it...how's the solo career going? You guys could have made millions more, but no......Sad!
1:45 Family friendly image? Their band is literally called The Barenaked Ladies, they have countless songs about depression and suicide, and their biggest hit had them openly admitting to fapping to anime. How family friendly are BNL, really? (Also, In The Car exists. And In The Drink.)
At the time they had just done a song for chicken little, another used for space chimps and released a kids album...they lost a lot of disney money because of his drug problems.
I'm not so sure. I just watched the Q interview where Tyler said "The choices were Steve stays in the band, and we split up or Steve quits the band and the four of us go on"
MilkmanNorm .... Worst decision ever made, in musical history! Just think of all the potential greatness DESTROYED over a little cocaine...Tyler, what a liberal piece of shit, douche bag! I hope Tyler has fun remembering what he did, and how he shit on Page, and on his own career by being a total creep.
@@shucksful It couldn't have been just Tyler wanting him out. Maybe someone's hiding behind the drummer here... "Search for Jehovah while He may yet be found. Call to Him while He proves to be near" ~bible
ya, i remember seeing somewhere, that they basically kicked him out of the band, in a 'mutual' way. you guys are rock starts, ffs. you're expected to be doing cocaine and worse. was interesting seeing jian ghomeshi on here. he would turn out to be a whacko, years later.
@TovaShai steven was crying. it was a breakup and we saw ed's pov and steven's. whether you see steven as heartbroken or not in this, he was. his lyrics from that time reflect that. they'd been best friends for half their lives, can you imagine how devastating it must've felt for both of them to let go of that?
Oh My God... A rock and roll guy used cocaine??? Wtf???? Who ever heard of such shenanigans? But it begs to ask? What kind of a respectable rock band partners with Disney?🤯🤷♂️
To be fair, a lot of BNL music veers into "for the kids" territory, despite the name, if any band was going to, it was them. Hell, my first exposure to BNL was "the Ballad of Gordon" during the Saturday morning cartoon line-up in the 90's.
@@RagnarokMic The Beatles are featured in kids music. ALL OF THEM have done acid, cocaine, heroin, pot and every other assorted kind of recreation. No? Prove me wrong. BNL had ZERO right to throw their best songwriter and singer out. And they paid the price for it. Now they are as irrelevant as used toilet paper. And they deserve it.👍🥃 And where is Disney now? Not holding BNL’s jock.👍
They'll just never be as good without him, I don't mind their new single but it has no edge. Could you imagine how cheesy the beatles would've been without John or George?
Those two songs don't even remotely define the band's image. Neither of those songs was prominent beyond the tours from their respective albums, nor was either of those songs ever used in a movie or on TV. Plus, neither of those songs is overtly offensive; "In The Car" is about as bad as they've ever gotten, and, again, it was never a prominent song. On the other hand, "If I Had $1000000" is by far their most prominent song, and there's no way you can argue that it's not family friendly.
life is life... i ve seen them with and without steven page, sad either way, but htey still kick it, either way.... stilll sad though... i couldnt give a sh*t about hte coke, or anything..... but i agree that the band, as an entity, has to make decisions about their future....but UUGGGHHH!!!!!!!!!
Saw Steven live last year, he did a few BNL songs, and it sounded great. I heard Ed sing Old Apartment and was thinking how off it sounds... Without Page, BNL is just not complete.
Would never have listened to 5 seconds of this new BNL without Page who really was the star and greatest talent. Good for them for trucking along and it beats a day job but at this point it is nostalgia.
Clearly not a real BNL fan. Ed wrote at LEAST half the songs including the biggest hits, and they’ve continued to make great albums in the original spirit with the similar sound and they tour 10,000+ seat venues all across the USA every year. Steve’s records aren’t bad, he’s also made great music since leaving. And he still tours too, but to a tenth as many fans. Anyway.
Watching this after seeing a more recent performance where Ed really struggled through Old Apartment. The band just isn't the same, or as good. But anyone who says they were family friendly only went to their All Ages shows lol
I like their post-Page stuff but when they sing Steve's songs it just feels off. No knock on Kevin but Sound of Your Voice falls completely flat, need big pipes to do it justice. They still put on a good show but during their Maroon days I went to a sold out ACC arena, was on another level big time.
I'm afraid I'm male, so I can't readily tell when a statement IS a statement and when it's not a statement. I DO know when something is a generalization, like if I said "Every woman is horrible at making rational statements." I wouldn't ACTUALLY be talking about every women. I'd have to have people look at the comment the reply was meant for, and they'd probably agree that in specific cases specific women were horrible at making rational statements, and I could just toss in a "just sayin'"
I honestly think page put himself in this situation I mean it's obvious when you mention barenaked ladies people are more likely to recognize them than if I where to mention Steven page people would be like who?
They are doing a concert in 2024 that ...As much as I would love to see them... I wont be buying tickets for because it's not the same with out the two of them. BNL is gone...
Drug addicts need a wake up call. Ed and the band possibly thought Page's antics were not good for BNL. BNL is still kicking ass, every show we see kicks ass over the page days. Same fun shows, same energy, same great music. Love the Ladies- 1 pompous drug addict!
Shut up. You obviously know absolutely NOTHING about drugs/alcohol and addiction. You're so ignorant and uneducated to think that just because Page was caught with cocaine, means he's a hardcore addict. People do drugs recreationally all the time and are NOT addicted. Pull your head out of your ass.
Lmao. No doubt they're still a good band .. But you must be on drugs if you think they are as good as they used to be. I've seen Steven Page without them and it's excellent I will not buy a Barenaked Ladies ticket without him, He sings most of the hit songs dumbass..
BNL is still exceptional without them. I would encourage you to go see them. Tickets aren't too bad pricing wise and its a really fun and energetic show. The same? No. Amazing in it's own way? Yes!
