Somebody needs to call the cops on this guy. He's direct and honest and informative. To top it off he uses common sense in his explanations. I mean who does that these days? Came across his videos this AM and have already subscribed and leveraged his suggestions to order supplies. Outstanding!

I paint detailed photo realistic landscapes and they often take close to 100 hours. I paint according to a gridwork, meaning, I paint either one or two square inches every time I sit down. I mix my paints directly over my photo reference by placing a sheet of clear glass over it and mixing the paint color and texture right there next to the reference, so I get it exactly right. Doing it this way, even though a painting may have 120 little squares, keeps me attentive to detail, but eventually gets the job done.

I needed this. Someone to tell me that it's okay to paint for ONE hour. Most days I'm lucky to get one hour. That's reality for most of us I bet.

Great videos and great hair! love it. I agree...short paintings are the best, as it forces you to see values, large shapes and not get too detailed and get more impressionistic

This makes perfect sense to grab an hour to hour and a half a day. This will be my effort. Pure common sense. Keeping the momentum going is the key to success. Thanks Coach.

This video is perfectly timed... I have just started and kinda found this advice on my own, much to some frustrations lol I did a few hours on Christmas Day (I asked for paint supplies in my presents) the cleaning, the organising, the learning, the prep work took forever... I ended up demoralised, the next day I did even longer... in determination to learn from the day before... I got frustrated and took a day off and then decided just small chunks of time is better what is great about you is that your planning of this video is so thoughtful for beginners like me and you’re helping by being a step ahead of our learning process so thank you 👍🙏🏽

I've only recently found your channel and subscribed right away. You common sense approach to all aspects of painting is so refreshing. I love the fact that you suggest 1hour painting as more practical. I can tell you from experience that trying to make yourself paint for 3 -4 hours every day does not work. It leads to putting it off one day because you don't have time, then 1 week then 1 month and then 1 or more years. I have been guilty of all of the above and wasted literally years procrastinating. I am so glad I found your channel.

This is exactly what I needed to start the NY. I’m stuck on a larger painting and been reworking problem areas over and over ...it’s getting boring and no closer to finishing. I’m going to put it aside, do some smaller paintings and start a short painting session habit. Thank you so much!

The only thing i worry about is all my paintings seem to all look the same and I wonder if anyone else feels frustrated with this? Thanks for all you have taught me so far xx

What you say is definitely true - we have all these misconceptions and false idealistic views when it comes to art that come from the past, like that the artist has to be some kind of suffering person who doesn't eat or sleep and just paints and paints and paints all day long and that's the only way to be a "real artist." In reality, art is like anything - you need to learn it step by step and take it really easy at the start, otherwise you are going to burn out. Great video!

@@paintcoach If you want to try digital art, I suggest using Clip Studio Paint since it's a one time buy on PC. PRO version is 50$ and EX version is 200$, tho the EX version is mostly geared towards those that want to do more animation and comic/webtoon production. PRO is fine for painting and illustration. And it's often on sale for half off!

Your videos are always helpful and informative. I would love to see one in the future about portraying texture - like a knit cap or a lizard’s skin, for example. How do you use color, shadow, layering, brushstroke, and how can you learn to see a texture in a way that gives you an idea of how to paint it?

Honestly, the "10,000 rule" does more harm than good imo. It doesn't really take into consideration that not many people have the luxury and privilege to spend that much time on a skill since they have other things to focus on like their jobs, school, family, and whatnot. I have a lot of artist friends that always say to never overdo it, and just draw for about 4-5 hours a day max to avoid burnout and hand injuries. Methodical and deliberate practice is what'll help you improve quicker rather than just practicing hundreds of hours without actually thinking about what you're doing.

Hi Chris, I have been learning lots from your videos so thank you for all these valuable lessons on oil painting. The only time I have to practice painting is when my baby is sleeping however I never know how much time I'm going to get sometimes an hour sometimes 15mins. I can't really plan what i want to paint accordingly so i end up either doing quick sketches or paintings that i have to do in lots of different sessions. Could you make a video on painting fast or how to deal with this issue of time limits... ! And what i can do to continue improving with limited time. Thank you very much for all your advice

Thank you for the motivation! I've been using the excuse of an hour isn't enough time to paint for years. My painting style is quite tight and it takes me ages even for a little study, so in an hour it can look like I haven't got much further. But I do like the finished result. Do you think I'll get quicker by just painting more often or is there something else I should do too? I really look forward to your videos x

Well Negative Nancy, he was literally showing a sped up live painting feed. He had to stretch out the explanation and be thorough which I love and appreciate. If you felt you understood the point in the first few minutes, mute the sound and just watch him paint. It’s that simple. That’s an even BETTER rule when you think about it. Win win for everyone. Nobody’s forcing you to listen to the whole thing.
