Today I offer you another plein air oil painting video with my Guerrilla Painter ThumBox v2 6x8 Pochade Box. In this video I use the impasto technique of working extremely thick. I use Liquin Impasto medium and my palette knife to add depth and texture to the painting.
I hope you enjoy!
Materials:
Winsor & Newton Artisan Water Mixable Oil Colours
Liquin Impasto
Guerrilla Painter ThumBox v2 6x8 Pochade Box
6x8 Guerrilla Cartón Plein Air Panel
I also wrote a blog post about plein air painting in Scotland, if you're interested: www.sarahburnss...

So beautiful and i enjoyed so much to watch you paint with palette knife. I hope that you make more palette knife videos. Lately i am trying palette knife myself and i think it allows a looser approach to painting.

Sarah this is a lovely painting. One of my favs. I have that same for Ella box and am setting it up just for oils. Seeing you paint this encourages me to get out there and try my hand at it.

your painting turned out so lovely! regarding your pochade box, did you have to install a Tee nut yourself when you got it (so you can attach it to a tripod)? The website says it comes pre drilled so i was wondering how that goes, and how easy it is
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 3 года назад
Yes it comes predrilled, but you have to order the add on plate which they make separately, it attaches to the bottom so you can put it on a tripod.

Really nice painting. I'm just trying Plein Air painting and am trying to film my journey. I have a few questions, you may be able to answer. I also use the water mixable oils because I refuse to use mineral spirits. Have you used traditional artist quality oils, if so how would you say water mixables behave in comparison. I have initial trouble getting the first layers to move across a gesso panel. Is that normal of all paints or is it a water mixable thing? I've tried all combinations of linseed oil, artisan thinner, artisan painters medium, and water and can never hit on a magic mix to make the paint flow consistently. I once started using unprimed MDF in a desperate attempt to get paint moving. If someone can reassure me that this is the same with traditional oils, I won't care as much. Lastly, does this Liquin impasto medium, improve flow. I once used Liquin original and thought it was the answer to my problems but the smell caused me to ditch it. Does impasto medium stink aswell? Many Thanks

Hello! I think I know what you mean - I have the same problem with every oil I've tried. Some pigments are more "smooth" than others (it's not just a brand thing). Like alizarin crimson flows really well, but titanium white is thick and requires some help moving along. I use regular oils as well as the water mixable. I prefer working with oils without any mediums added, working very thick, wet into wet. The convenient thing about water mixable is that you can just use a tiny bit of water (very tiny!) to increase the flow as needed. For regular oils, I use either safflower oil or lavender (watch my Rogie falls plein air video, I talk about it there). The impasto medium stinks as bad as the liquin, it's practically the same stuff.

@@SarahBurnsStudio Thanks for reply. I'm more content with my materials now you've said that. I always wondered if I were using an inferior product. There are very few oil painters on youtube who give time to talking about water mixables by comparison, so this helped.

@@pochadeboxpainting3843 I'm glad I can help! I love sharing these experiences with other artists. It really feels like a great learning collective.

Sarah, I have a pochade called a 'Bitterroot', it's made in the states. You can raise the bottom of your panel to avoid having to remove it every time you want to paint the bottom or side edges. I felt frustrated for you 😕 but once again enjoyed your rambling and painting 😊👍nice depth. allaprimapochade.com/products/10-x-12-bitterroot

Yes I've seen ones like that. Mine is much more compact and lightweight, and affordable for my budget. But thanks for sharing! And don't worry, it's not as frustrating as you might think... I'm very used to balancing things on my lap, moving the sketchbook around, getting messy :D haha.. i think my plan for the future is to use painters tape around the edges so I can grab the sides cleanly.

Fun painting. Would like to know more of the name of the colors you use and mix together each time.
