My first unboxing video! I finally received my Sienna Plein Air Pochade Box (Large) and decided to take you along the journey of setting it up, as well as my first oil painting with this beautiful piece of equipment. At the time of making this video, I was a beginner with oils (coming from a watercolor background). So this is like a "first impression" video from a beginner point of view.

Sarah Burns Studio hi, just found your channel...I have the Sienna box and love it...use it inside as well...it's like having a laptop and can be used in car if weather is bad...any place...I did put a piece of Gray under the glass..I linked a video of what I mean...it helps to pick up the glass to clean...also I linked a video of great artist here in states...how he mixes a chalk like...into the surface paint for boards....it gives a wonderful texture and you can adjust as you like..by sanding and how much to sand or not sand at all as Trent does....enjoy your time with your new pochade... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fEAi_iMAWWE.html...this is Trent and how and what he uses on his smooth boards for prime and texture. This is an artist showing how and what he put under the glass for easy removal and uses the grey for mixing...I copied him...works great... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-X8YrRYRtFDY.html Best wishes...subbed

I plan on purchasing one of these soon. Just a tip that I have heard, before you open the box you should loosen the side knobs and slide the bracket all the way back. This will keep it from breaking and will support it much better. Thanks for sharing. I love this pochade box and can’t wait to get mine.

Thank you Sarah for sharing these videos. I must say these boxes have become part of my art obsession. Recently got the guerilla painter after watching your video. Thanks for the reviews/unboxing and the inspiration. Love your works and the channel!

Two years later and this video is still super helpful! I was trying to decide between the Sienna and the New Wave U Go, but I think I'll go with the Sienna!
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 4 года назад
They are so different! If you want something light and less cumbersome go with the New Wave but if you want a studio and plein air box that doesn't need to be light or compact then I recommend the Sienna

I know exactly what you're saying. I switch between oils and watercolour / gouache too so I have a pochade 'Bitterroot' always set up on a tripod. Makes life so much easier 😊 I'm enjoying your channel 👍Thanks for sharing.

I have the same pochade box with the addition of the paint and brush box as well. I mount it on a manfrotto 190 tripod. I like to use Cobra water soluble oils myself.

That was a good approach to outline the trees first. Looks like you’ll get along well with that paint box.

Thank you Dennis! I am loving it so much. I'm still very new to oil, but this setup encourages me to use it more often. I kind of have art ADHD and love jumping between several types of paint on a daily basis!

Sara, your just like me with directions! However if you take a look the directions tell you how to move and fasten those side clampy things, before opening the lid , so the easel back will not be wiggly orfall down! Enjoy your channel very much!

I only just discovered this video so I know I am jumping in here late. If you’re looking for more texture on your panels clear gesso has grit in it. I use it for pastels sometimes.

What you need to do now with your Sienna pochade box is take a sheet of 90 or 140 watercolour paper and, using gesso and black paint mixed to a mid value of 5 or 6 or whatever you prefer, and cover the sheet with it. Then remove the glass palette, cut the gessoed paper to fit under the palette, place the paper on the bottom of the box and then replace the glass palette. That will give you a grey palette against which to evaluate tones.
@SarahBurnsStudio

Burnt Sienna yes..also cut around to fit in place of screws this allows for easy removal of glass.. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-X8YrRYRtFDY.html

Good. I love seeing other people's art equipment. Perhaps that's weird but I dont care. The sienna looks great. I bought the guerilla 9X11. I may change the wooden palette to glass but glass appears to not contain the paint in a pile and over-spread it (to my eye)
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 5 лет назад
Glass is sooooooooo much better in my opinion, it's one reason I don't like the Guerrilla boxes as much as others. But the wood is super light, and if you are backpacking it is nice to reduce weight in every way.

Hello, your work is so inspiring. I have been looking into plein air supplies. Glad I found this video. What tripod would you recommend using with this? I have an old heavy duty camera tripod that I hate so any suggestions would be helpful! Thanks.
@SarahBurnsStudio

I just use my Amazon prime tripod, pretty basic but heavy/wide enough to do the job.

My pallet gets like that, if you use a steel pot scrubber and Ajax you can scrub it under hot water and it all comes off. I have the same wood pallet

You can remove dried oils with good oven oven cleaner so ray, but you may have to re-varnish your pallet. Rinse very well and dry immediately. If in doubt, wipe with a little vinegar and rinse again. I use oven cleaner on jeans and heavy cottons. I would test synthetics first.

your palette knife work is GREAT!!! baby wipes work great on cleanup.....will get oils off hands, brushes and surfaces very well.....if you save your oils in one of the wet palette keepers and freeze them they will last for years....really...
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 4 года назад
Never thought of baby wipes! That would be good for plein air. I have frozen my paint before (actually forgot about it for about 3 weeks and it was good as new!) But my problem is remembering to put it in the freezer to begin with lol
@isabellacorble
@isabellacorble 4 года назад
A cottonwool ball with a few drops of CLOVE OIL (from chemist) tucked in a corner of the palette will keep the oils from forming a skin and keep them fresh for ages...no freezer needed.

Hi Sarah... I am picturing you framed your wooden paint-covered palette , shadow box style , and sold it in an Art Show. Whereupon the purchaser took it, used it with their oil paints and then sold it . Again. Sorta like the Artisthood of the Traveling Palette. Imagine the stories that could be compositioned from its tales !!

Can you fold it all the way down, so both sides are flat? Or can the canvas portion only be positioned at an angle?

Yes it folds open completely flat.

Do you really have to leave the glass in? I would want to put a grey piece of paper underneath.
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio Год назад
You can unscrew some wood pieces to remove the glass, and I did that after about a month. I put grey paper under which really helped.

Apply gesso with a small foam roller. It leaves minute indentations on a seemingly smooth surface. This is lovely to paint on.

@@SarahBurnsStudio that makes it hard to take it plein air😥 i just bought a pochade box last week, a SOHO. It has a short & long handle. It's not as strong as the Sierra, but it's good for the price. On the reviews, a lot of ppl saud the Sierra was tonzz better....

Honestly a handle is the least important aspect of a pochade box. In every situation I've gone painting I have a backpack or shoulder bag for supplies and the box is inside
