I’ve heard that once you use Henry’s Tropicool you cannot really use anything else (at least not a non-silicone product) because it is silicone and other products will not adhere.

Great video. Thanks for sharing the challenges of the job. It’s not easy as a non-roofer to get the straight skinny on Henry’s 887, application and product consistency. That is so sickening and frustrating about buying someone’s return as new…that a person would use what they needed, then top off the container with water get a full refund, with no possible way for anyone to check the return or any consideration for the harm they might do to another person. Good to know.

I know this is old video, but will pass along some info, henry 887 is 100% silicone coating, if you use this 887, when you recoat you have to use another 100% silicone coating regardless, if it is henry 887 or a different brand, also if you put a vent or something else that needs sealed, Dicor will not adhere to this, you have to use a silicone, henry does have caulking to for this or just use the 887, I used a brush and put this in a carboard box, next day filled it with water, it sat for days and never leaked, my only complaint with henry 887 is the dust adheres to more then other coatings, also you have to be very careful if on roof when water or dew is on it very slippery

Nice bus. Sorry about your troubles but think about this. Like Haley said, Tropicool is a 100% silicone coating. Elastomeric paint and roof coatings are water/acylic base. If you have ever tried to paint over a bead of silicone caulk, you would know that water base paint will bead up or separate and not stick to the silicone caulk. Lesson learned, generally speaking, nothing sticks to silicone except another coat of silicone. I'm a 35-year retired commercial painter. These things I know. Next season, just pressure wash again and apply another coat of Tropicool and you'll be good for decades. Or, at 65 mph, the remaining water base coat may flake off in the wind! jk Good luck.

Randy Lamoreaux yessir you are correct! Things like that the average guy like myself wouldn’t know and wouldn’t think to look at it if they are all “roof sealant”. It’s also why I posted the video so people can learn from my mistake. And most of the paint is already coming off so another Tropicool coat is going g to be needed soon. 😂 thanks for your feedback.

I did one roof 3 years ago. Still as perfect as the day I finished the job. Now on second roof-the one on our detached garage. Big job for a small roof bc of the need for extensive prep’ing, but going well so far. Next will be the main roof. Bigger job than the other two combined. These roofs are metal with standing seams and are over 90 years old. They have been coated multiple times by people who didn’t remove any dirt or debris sitting on the surface let alone any prior layers regardless of whether they were loose or not. So we’re scraping back probably up to 9 layers of roof coating POORLY applied. If the roof that I did first, the worst of all of them, is any indication I will never have to do anything to the roofs ever again unless something actually punctures them, like hail or a tree branch. Henry Tropi-cool is the best! Do the correct prep and it has a lifetime warranty!

In my opinion Your good, if it's not leaking, which probably was your main objective, it's is white and reflecting the sun. Just wait awhile and recoat with the silicone. The other coatings may leave some white chalking on the side of the vehicle as they age but you should be able too remove that with pressure washing. You did a great job You just got messed by someone trying to get over.

Yeah, I don't think they liked each other. Henry's also says you can get away with one coat in their videos, so maybe just wait for that one to peel completely off and re-coat with tropi-cool again. Getting ready to do my bus, and i think i'll spend the money on the silicone. How many gallons did it take?

Nothing sticks to silicone. That's why your 2nd coat failed.
@garrettgreenberg60
@garrettgreenberg60 Месяц назад
1) Check sq footage coverage before beginning. Easy to see on almost any paint product. 2) If coat #1 is 100% Silicone, then all other coats must also be 100% Silicone as nothing else will reliably stick to it. Doesn't matter what brand. Your second coat not sticking has nothing to do with BlackJack, its that it was the wrong product. 3) You should've used mastic on the rivets and seams before coating. That step was skipped entirely. Hope it ends up alright though. Sucks how bad this one went sideways. We've all wasted $10 because we were trying to save $1. Lessons learned for next time.

The problem is the Henry "elastomeric " you used is water/latex based..it will not stick to 100% silicone. You MUST use 100% silicone Tropicool or some other brand 100% silicone..nothing else will stick...

Beware of HD staff few know anything about anything. Henry Products say on label have 24 month self life. Only one HD in my city had the Henry 884 sealant and 1-gal and 4.75 gal buckets but they were all covered with dust so been sitting on self a long time and beware of age. The box I took the Henry 884 calk tubes out of was dated in 2017 (I learned later) so way out of 24 months. One tube was okay, the other was crap. I took the rest back and search the label on the shipping boxes to find newer product. HD staff was helpful as a heart-attack and had no idea about shelf life printed on the lable. fyi, when applying roof coating you really need to use a wet film thickness gauge for paint and resins to verify you are coating to required thickness. Some paint stores have them so does amazon for about $9

justmaleo when I went to the store the first time looking for Tropicool they only had one 5 gallon bucket of Henry’s but it wasn’t Tropicool it was another type of Henry’s paint. It was open and not sealed. So when I looked inside I mentioned that it was much more liquid than the Tropicool. They said if any problems just bring it back. In Hindsight it’s almost like they knew it was returned and something was wrong with it. So they exchanged it out for the other one with no problem. Other people in this video are wifey & mom recording and Pops was in there for a sec. Is that what you mean?

You are not supposed to coat metal roofs as it can create water pockets that promote rust and leakage. (see Flat Roof Doctor videos) You would want to rust proof paint probably first and use a flashing type patch silicone with unwoven fabric patches over screws and seams only.
@TheUngerYears
@TheUngerYears 3 года назад
So you’re not supposed to paint metal roofs? That’s the first I’m hearing of this. Nobody else has ever commented that before.
@OWK000
@OWK000 3 года назад
@@TheUngerYears Painting metal with Rustoleum type paint/prime is good. They even make an aluminized asphalt kind of paint especialy for metal, but silicone or acrylized coatings can crack and let the water underneath which causes water pockets which causes more rust and leaks quicker. (Even paint can do this, but not so much) 100% Silicone is more UV resistant so better than other roofing coatings, but bad to walk on when you must do maintenance. You only need paint anyway, which is cheaper and you can walk on it, and use special coatings only at the seams and bolts. I like the Flat Roof Doctor guy: Why not to paint Metal Roofs: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tEBIPqEvn7A.html Aluminized Asphalt coating: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MrQEQcrjwFI.html

@@brionunger2678 Well if there are any little rusty spots just getting started it is not good. You can't paint rustoleum or anything else over silicone. You can only add more Tropicool or totally rasp off all the silicone which is a lot of work. Just keep an eye on it. When it goes you will have to make decisions. I am just researching a flat roof job myself, but I am interesting in the mobile living.
