I completely felt that struggle with the back arm’s pose. You kept changing it and going back and fourth. Glad you got there in the end, trust the process!

I couldn't watch it because I just burst into tears from the piano music. And I'm a man :I However, it's a beatiful piece of art! You are, with Dave Rapoza, among my greatest inspirations - you are a woman of focus, commitment and sheer f**ing will!

Samurai (侍) were the hereditary military nobility and officer caste of medieval and early-modern Japan from the late 12th century until their abolition in 1876. They were the well-paid retainers of the daimyo (the great feudal landholders). They had high prestige and special privileges, such as wearing two swords. They cultivated the bushido codes of martial virtues, indifference to pain, and unflinching loyalty, engaging in many local battles. Though they had predecessors in earlier military and administrative officers, the samurai truly emerged during the Kamakura shogunate, ruling from c.1185-1333. They became the ruling political class, with significant power but also significant responsibility. During the 13th century, the samurai proved themselves as adept warriors against the invading Mongols. During the peaceful Edo era (1603 to 1868), they became the stewards and chamberlains of the daimyo estates, gaining managerial experience and education. In the 1870s, samurai families comprised 5% of the population. As modern militaries emerged in the 19th century, the Samurai were rendered increasingly obsolete and very expensive to maintain compared to the average conscript soldier. The Meiji Restoration ended their feudal roles, and they moved into professional and entrepreneurial roles. Their memory and weaponry remain prominent in Japanese popular culture.

3:14 make sure to have fun with lighting and the resulting bounce lgihting from the start, dont add it in later on when you already hit and finsiehd render stage, will need alot of cleanup work as a result esp if done traditional;ly

This is sooo useful, but how did you learn rendering like that? I'm in art school but for some reason I can't wrap my head around painting convincing forms. Book recommendations? Or just practice?
@Astri_Lohne
@Astri_Lohne 4 года назад
A lot of studies to understand form, but also just tons of reference! Rendering is much easier if you have a ref of the material/shape you're rendering. I look at a lot of League splash art, and Ruan Jia's art for this. You can also do master studies of well rendered paintings to understand it more!

May I ask how much time it takes for you to do one illustration/key-art on average? And how much time a company usually gives you to do one if it's for a game? Also, the artwork is astonishing! You go all-in with rendering, I would've been tired of the piece halfway :D
@Astri_Lohne
@Astri_Lohne 4 года назад
Usually between 15 and 25 hours! Doing things like this freelance I've gotten deadlines of everything from 6 days to 1-2 months. I'd say it's on average about 14 days.

Hello Astri... what canvas size and resolution did you use for this paintings?? and generally for your paintings?? and one more thing.. i see that you do a super zoom and the image stays clear... how is this possible?? when i zoom it gets pixelated :/
@koss3089
@koss3089 3 года назад
if you have a bigger canvas then you can zoom in further without it getting pixelated, also i see recommended a lot to use 300 for the resolution and it works for me

Good rendering, but what is going on with the anatomy here? His head is not connected to his body, his skull is deformed, left arm too, looks pretty damn terrifying. If you don't know anatomy basics, try to take a photo of someone in similar pose and see how it looks.
