I'm so so sorry about all the keyboard clacking! I had no idea it would be this bad but I wasn't able to reduce it in editing. I'll make sure to have a better setup next time (´;ω;`)
I believe i'm more or less on the level you were when the first painting was made and definitively will try to think more abt the mentioned mistakes and will hopefully fix it with the tips if my small brain cooperates video helped a lot, very well explained, thank you
This is amazing how you can bring so much realism and life to your painting. It encourages me to do better myself and practicing more my anatomy and colors. Thank you for making this great content, it helps me a lot! (Sorry for my english, it's not perfect ^^)
I think that showing something like this is incredibly useful and enlightening for beginners trying to improve their own art. I imagine if you had just shown the revision as an original, a lot of people wouldn't be able to see why it works, just that it contains elements that look good.
Your art makes me literally wanna cry, it's so beautiful now and it was 5 years ago too! Thank you so much for taking the time to do what you do, I think I speak for all of us when I say we appreciate you and your workflow so much. Please keep it up, you're a huge inspiration for me and many others!
By the thumbnail I thought this was a video by Istebrak until I saw the username! :D I was excited nonetheless that you had uploaded a video because I enjoy listening to your commentary and watching your painting process. It's really motivating to see the drastic improvement over your old artwork! I love that you don't do any kind of 'clickbaity', short and fast-paced stuff on your channel but instead are more focused on delivering helpful content and helping other artists improve their work! I've been following your YT channel for a while now and you're one of my favourite (YT) artists together with Istebrak and others! (I would list all of them but it would make this already long comment even longer :D)
"Hopefully you guys can feel good about how bad I used to be " she said. Your "horrible" old art makes my current art looks "not worth mentioning that I do art as a hobby".
This is such a deadly statement to make as a artist towards beginners. She totally forgets about how much she learned to even get to that level in the first place, saying its bad. is saying people who are on equal level to that of her first image, are basically bad at what they do and should get better :P But i get why she says it. still a bit sour tho :P
her old art isn't horrible at all, just a different style. she does not choose her words very carefully there. the added realism and techniques do create something more interesting here I'd say but the critique is still very subjective. that's why realism has such attraction, because it seems to be some sort of pinnacle in painting everybody can be rated according to. this was believed to be true a couple hundred years ago... therefor, this is a bit of a historical topic - realism in painting - as we invented photography somewhere along the road. thus, however good you get at realism, you're basically always copying photographic references, which makes you a graphic designer instead of an artist. fine art does not equal excellent technique _alone_ - we're long past that.
@@h00db01i saying bad art is just your style is a excuse that begginer artists use. For someone that knows art its pretty obvious when something is wrong and when something is a stylistic choice. Her old art was not awfull by any means but it is nowhere near the level of her repaint. And no, it wasnt just a diferent style, even she says she was trying to paint realistically. I find that trying to be a carebear with critic can be even worse than being too blunt. I wish peopke pointed out shit I did wrong but all they said was how beautifull my art was even when I knew it was pretty bad.
3 minutes in and I am really really digging it! Wish we had more tutorials like this, slowly explaining the thought process. Man I HATE speedpaintings...
this is the first video of yours that im stumbeling upon. when i realized how long the video was i thought "pfft never going to watch the entire thing, ill probably click away soon", but i ended up watching every minute. this was really interesting, and you gave some very good tips that ill definitely keep in mind!
I was not planning on watching this whole video, I was gonna keep it in my watch later, but oh my god it was so interesting I couldn't look away! You are such a good teacher!
hearing you talk about how and why youre making certain choices is SO helpful, this was amazing!! feel free and do as many videos of this as you want haha
No non-artist would ever have graded the 1st one a 6 or a 7. But by artist standards, you brought that one to a 9. You're so experienced. Great exersize as well to go over an old work.
Oh it's Zoë Castillo! I love this game series so much. So happy they finally got around to making Chapters and finishing The Longest Journey. It truly has been a very long journey.
Wow! This was so helpful! I love how you really went over and talked about the mistakes you made in the past and why those don't work with the painting. I really enjoyed this as a beginner myself and how it was better to imply things to make it seem more natural. Also, whoa, your recreation turned out so well. ((:
This was so useful and insightful! I feel I'm about at the level of your first painting and it's really made me think about the way I structure things and my own rendering pitfalls. Thank you!
This was so extremely helpful. I'm progressing into larger digital paintings - and all of your tips were things I forget to remind myself of while painting. + Your keyboard clicking was fine. :) I actually really enjoyed it. It made it feel sort of like a live-stream and more authentic!! Thank you for this overpaint. :)
Some days ago I was thinking that you didn't post any video since a long and I missed it. I'm so glad to find this one today !! Thank you a lot Astri ♥
You always mention something in your videos that I can think about and improve on. I really appreciate when you take the time to record a voiceover. Tusen tack och hälsningar från Sverige :D
I couldn't finish this in one sitting but I went back to it before I went to bed hoping to retain the info but I woke up and watched it again at breakfast cuz everything about this vid is top tier lesson, it was very very helpful and you're a really awesome artist and i love your channel alreadyy ngl
Wow your so sympathic, the way you explain all those details is amazing and fun. Also it seems that youve got much experiance in drawing and its nice to watch this, thanks
Another easy way to switch to grayscale is go to View>Proof Setup>Custom>Choose Gray Gamma then OK. After that just press Ctrl+Y to switch to grayscale then press again to revert back to color.
There are a lot of things I like about your videos, but I really wanted to highlight your ambience/music. Thanks for putting knowledge out along with a nice setting and mood, it transpires care and passion on top of the information and it makes all the difference.
This is so brave. I hate looking at old art. It's interesting though, your original painting represents a stage that virtually every intermediate artist goes through - line dependency around the nose/ eyes/ mouth, bashing textures/ photo manip without perspective or integration, & (most importantly) inconsistent lighting on character not integrated in the scene. However, even for experienced artists a lot of us do those last 2 things in a studio or for a client if we have to finish a work quickly & it's for a concept not an illustration. This is a great example of taking work to the next level!
Its like watching a overly stylized version of Lara Croft become what she is today in the games. Really nice to watch these, and i learn so much from them :) Cheers from Oslo
This is great. While the first painting looked good compared to anything I could make now, it was a great feeling to recognize my growth as an artist as I tried predict the things that you would change based on principles about contrast, lighting, form. and shape language. After all, you can't improve your art until you know what you need to go for. Your realtime explanations were helpful, and your willingness to scrub out whole chunks and start over was very encouraging.
You may say that you hate it at this point, since it's 4 months old, but I still found it incredibly informative and helpful! Thank you for uploading it regardless!
"Hopefully it will make you feel good about how bad I used to be" Well I don't feel good because I wish I could draw like your old art. (I know I just need experience and practice.)
This is such good info and wow what a finished product! Can you overpaint my life please and see if it comes together as nicely!? lmao! Excellent work.
While the video quality isn't the best (it clearly wasn't pre-written, and there's a bit of keyboard click-clack going on), this is still a fantastic video. I'm not a painter, but I've read up enough of the theory that most of these were things I already know, even if I can't put them into practice. However, it took me years to learn all of these things one by one, from various sources. This is already a fantastic resource for a beginner artist who knows they need to improve, but doesn't know how! If you have the opportunity to do another one of these, with better editing, it could end up a really good guide. I wonder if it'd be possible to do an overpainting timelapse first, and then add explanations to that afterwards? It'd be tricky without you being able to paint in the examples, but that way, you wouldn't have to switch gears between artist mode and teacher mode all the time.
Wow looks so much better! Love the lighting, and the scarf definitely needed redesigning, the shapes of the folds before were pretty flat and bland. You've obviously improved by leagues.
so @AstriLohne whenever you use crop you have the overlay of the golden ratio, is it a plugin? can i get a link to that? also awesome paintover i enjoyed the problem solving process!
Ahhh , You are even better than Ross ;w;. Really nice. If u ever consider making more tutorials about how values work, it would be a very wanted topic.
Can you maybe tell something about the pressure sensitivity you are using for example soft or medium and why you think it´s better to use a costume pressure sensitivity?
