I ran a commercial painting company for 35 years. Had as many as 25 man crew at a time. We were pioneering many of the spray techniques in the early 80's. Today I would require every one of my painters to watch these videos. This guy is good. I'll never forget the first time we field sprayed metal door frames for a big commercial job. As they were pulling them off the truck we lined them up in rows so you could walk through the opening. A three man crew sprayed over 500 door frames that day. No one had seen anything like it. I bid the job at $30 a frame. All we had to do was a little touch up after they were installed. I banked some coin that day boys. Like he says "get an automobile finish". I learned fast to hire guys that had done auto painting. They could switch to airless easy.

I used to paint fighter aircraft in the Air Force some years back. I can sling some paint but never used an airless system. I'm now a disabled Combat Vet and on a fixed income. Gotta do stuff myself if I want it done cheap. I gotta finish painting the inside of my home and I'm thinking about buying an airless system. Bit of a learning curve but the techniques are about the same. Looking forward to playing around with one. I've rolled most of the house already...it sucks. I can do it, but if spraying is easier, I'll spend the coin. Might be able to pick up some side money too.

One little trick I use when I'm orbital sanding the faces of baseboard to protect the tape that's down just have a 2 or 3 ft section of roll flooring and just kind of keep it moving along with you as you're sanding so you don't burn your tape it's a nice little added layer of protection I knew a guy that would cut the 16th of an inch off of his sanding disc for his orbital and that would keep the edge of the paper disk from ripping the tape that works good too

I have been following and enjoying your channel for a little bit now, was very impressed with your knowledge when it comes to cabinets from your hanging technique and the supplier you are representing. Here is my question; when it comes to airless spray technique and the masking of your floor, why wouldn't you hand sand the faces because there didn't seem to be that many issues from the previous paint job this way you only have to clean once before masking. When you demonstrated on proper technique with the caulking gun, in cutting the tube using the razor equiped with the gun, why didn't you use a razor blade which gives a cleaner cut and does not leave that little ridge at the end of the the tube? My other question is, why would you use an extension on your spray gun that is only 6", isn't it more effective and production oriented to use a 3' spray wand with a knuckle attachment at the end of the pole for the baseboards? This same setup can also be used on most of your ceilings and walls. Its less weight than the attachment you are using when spraying your ceilings. When spraying your doors, you show that same small extension being used. Most journeymen professionals know its all in the wrist...the extension seems to make that technique, which is proper, a little difficult to achieve. Where is the swivel to your whip? I know there is one attached to your gun but most professionals understand that a Silver gun with a swivel attachment to the whip is far more effective. The Silver gun has a more effective way of filtering your paint, ie. Rack-5 with a filter that you put in the tip of the gun is a more cost effective and cleaner way to spray a fine finish. My last question, is why you would use a stir stick on top of the door and spray against the walls that are going to be painted instead of numbering and hanging the doors in a circle using a mounting system provided by Sherwin-Williams? Again, more cost effective and faster and you don't have to worry about a mil thickness issue or sanding your walls. Thanks Production sprayer from Arizona having sprayed an excess of 4000+ homes. One last thing; you know you have to paint the top and bottom of the doors, it seems you have skipped this step.

main thing with spraying is don't stop moving while trigger is pressed.....some in their first few times freeze on a spot, never stop moving the gun when paint is coming out.....rest just takes time and experience but its not too bad, obviously some stuff is harder to spray than others (like clear laquer)…..a lot of cabinets and trim out here is primer ( color of your choice) and clear laquer over it ( sheen of your choice)…..primer sticks really well and laquer gives it protection and sheen

The Idaho painter and his crews are so good and so experienced, I've been painting and drywalling for over 22 years now and work for an amazing painting company myself, I live in Washington in kitsap county and work for sablehaus west painting, we use the same tips to, sometimes on our big interiors we'll have doors set up in different areas in rooms with the trim and window wraps in the rooms, I'll use the 310 for my trim and window wraps then will have a 410 in my pocket and just switch my tip for my doors, the orifice is the same, just an 8 inch pattern so don't have to go back to the pump to adjust pressure, I always check my pattern also on a piece of floor paper tacked to the wall, you always want to check your pressure, tip wear, pattern on paper first , never not do these things and just start spraying, if someone just starts spraying and things aren't right you'll see everything underneath your finish and it's a huge mistake. Listen to the Idaho painter, he knows what he's talking about without question.

Noticed a problem when you were shooting doors against the walls. Had a problem years ago where the paint contractor sprayed all the doors in the house in the laundry room, against one wall. That ended up with a major snafu. The wall was a mess of lacquer build up. Entire wall had to be floated and re-textured. Don't suggest spraying against existing walls without protection before you start shooting multiple coats of new finish.

Great video. I was an apprentice painter in the Bay Area in 1988 thru 91. And we never sprayed baseboards or door casings. In fact we barely sprayed inside a home unless it was a popcorn ceiling. And with exteriors we’d spray and always either back roll or back brush. It’s amazing how things have changed. I have a handyman business today where I do many different types of trades because I’ve worked construction most of my life, but I’m always battling the internal conflict of masking time and prep for spraying interiors vs just using a bucket and screen and a brush. So many times it seems like a wash when it comes to cost of masking materials and time spent on all the masking vs just rolling out or brushing. It’s just me working out in the field too. I think it would definitely be easier masking if I had an assistant tho. How say you??

I agree, there is always that internal conflict after 15 years just bought a sprayer and although the finish is finer. What with the dust and having to wear a mask even then the health implications I'm not sure it was worth it. I enjoy brushing and rolling. A day spent rolling and brushing trim is way less stressful and more enjoyable than spraying. We'll see if I change my tune as I get faster in masking but I've already easily doubled maybe tripled my tape, plastic and paper cost.

Chris your videos are great. I been a painter for a long time. What is you opinion on what is the best material to give a new rough sawn wood patio a white was look? It must be able to withstand the elements outside. I look forward to future vidios

Awesome guys, do you like to use the battery-operated handheld sprayers on the baseboards or are they inadequate in some situations???

I haven't watched the whole video yet. I do have a comment about New Construction which I'm about to get in to. In my construction laborer days we would have to scrape windows cause they mostly all had windows before they get cased then we paint. Maybe it's our way if doing it in Michigan but we always have windows installed as soon as the rough framing gets finished and passed

Hello, I’m a DIY’r and I am installing and painting window trim. I’m using SW SOLO semi-gloss. I’m using a Graco Handheld Ultra corded with an FFLP 210 with pressure set on 6. The finish I’m getting is a little rough/bumpy and not a nice smooth semi-gloss finish. Watching this video, it appears that I am spraying too far away from the surface. I’m going to get an extension, get closer to the surface and move quicker. Am I in the right tack? Any other ideas that I need to consider?

Do the spits at 9:00 with the 311 tip ever really go away? When you do trim around doors and floors at 27:00, do those spits just end up on the walls and get sanded or what happens? Struggling with those even without the extension.

QUESTION: I tried to paint some doors in my house but the texture kinda looks like an orange peel in several spots and you can see gray specs within some of the “orange peel craters”...what am I doing wrong? FYI: I used Krud Cutter gloss off on doors prior to painting instead of sanding. I’m using a graco project painter plus with a 311 tip & 6” extension. After rewatching your videos again (LoL) I do realize I did make a mistake by stopping and starting (one pass top to bottom and start again) Would that have caused what I’m describing? Also, it doesn’t show the psi on my pump, so where in the gage would be a good marker to go by for the 1200 psi you recommend? Thanks! P.S love your videos!

i just started spraying. i have a couple sprayers. Graco 210 and 5x. Titan seems to spray smoother by me just hearing it on this video. And the 6 -10 extension. What are the advantages?

I don't have a professional sprayer. I'll be using a brush. What do you add to make HI-GLOSS paint on trim or doors lay down smoother? Thanks.
