Another amazing video! This channel is what made me switch from clean cut space marines to filthy, battle worn angels of death. After watching this, my current batch will have a lot more rust, a lot more damage and really push the darker side of the Salamanders. Thank you again for this video!

I've recently discovered, not only this channel, but this style of painting. What I find to be interesting is within 40K, while it is known as "Grimdark" there are many settings and factions that run counter to that aesthetic. Tau are by design anathema, and Catachan Jungle Fighters, while in lore they come from a Death World where most people (even as tough and hardy as they are) don't survive to adulthood, aesthetically, they look more at home on a Manowar Album Cover. I'd like to see the guy that paints these models do an official Catachan infantry model in this style while staying true to the aesthetic.

The setting is also so expansive in scale than almost any conceivable set up can exist "somewhere" within the Imperium.

I'm so surprised to see "Hard to be a God" here, but I believe that this movie is as grimdark as it gets. It's kind of hard to understand on it's own though (without reading the book, or at least summary of the plot) since the shots in this movie invert the point of attention. The dialogues are happening in the background while you are seeing the utter chaos and horror of the scene.

Thank you for your video... It's kind of hard to push Grimdark and realistic styles on "meta" competitions, but with more Grimdark Leaders such as you... well there is a chance for it. And there is a chance to be more visible to the general public because we as "Grim/real artists" stand out more from the crowd.

The style has been on a come-up over the last year or so. A Grimdark entry took home a golden Demon earlier this year or last year.

This is great description. I can understand that styles are subjective to a degree, but a lot of times I see people apply some grunge and say their models are grimdark, but the thing they always seem to lack is the dark, uncomfortable feeling that it's supposed to represent.
@DarkAgesWorkshop
@DarkAgesWorkshop 7 месяцев назад
Yeah, exactly. It's OK to contribute with personal views, but I also felt it was the time to nail down some objective stakes. Every style has its rules, the box art / eavy metal style has very precise instructions. It only makes sense that one has to adhere to certain paradigms in the grimdark style too.

I think, that the "grimdark style" may something which looks cool on a photograph or in a video, where you zoom in on the mini and can present it in a certain fitting enviroment and lighting. But for a miniature-tabletop game, I think the muted down and dark colour pallet makes it look like a dark grey and brown blob where the details of the figure become way too obscure. I guess there is a sweet spot that can be achieved, where a mini looks and feels "grimdark" but is also readable at armlengths distance.
@DarkAgesWorkshop
@DarkAgesWorkshop 7 месяцев назад
Oh I see what you mean. For how I see it, your models can absolutely be recognizeable and readable from armlenghts distance in the grimdark style with no compromises: I myself am a player, I actually love delving into the rules of the games I play. I would be a hypocrite to say I never lost a "grimdark" miniature on a "grimdark" table for a good minute, but those things improve the more you model and paint and adjust the process for an optimized gaming experience. It's all about the composition of the models: you can have high contrast with pale skin. Or, if you have dark skin, you can have faded white clothing or features. Or you can use the bases instead, or the sheen of weapons, and countless opportunities with surface finish variation: the possibilities are more than one might actually think. It doesn't have to be a brown blob, and that's why I felt necessary to stress out that grimdark doesn't mean only drab and dirty colors or a oil wash! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Yeah they look like shit in natural lighting. It’s all dark photography/contrast editing to make the grimdark minis look way better then what they do majority of the time.

I've been painting minis since i was 5 years old (now 32), and i have definitely seen the evolution of miniature painting go from hobby to artform over that time. I remember people in forums questioning whether or not what we were doing could be considered an art. I can say now that mini painting is undoubtedly an artform. I'd say the easiest way to distinguish the Grimdark style from other styles of painting and modeling is how it makes you feel and how it contrasts with other styles. Grimdark is much less "technical" (typically) and MUCH more abstract. Ask yourself, "How do the colleges starting at 2:15 make me feel?" (And how can i achieve that feeling with my own miniatures) as opposed to what technical skills must I master in order to paint like the "box art"
@DarkAgesWorkshop
@DarkAgesWorkshop 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for your comment! I agree that grimdark can be much more abstract, and how it makes you feel, the emotion it conveys. However depending on the personal style and approach, it can also be highly technical, with a varying degree of "abstract" that meets "lifelike". And that is where I personally like to play, within the realm of that uncanny valley. The techniques we use and we show on our website range from very easy to advanced in difficulty; the hair application, glue technique, all the knowledge when it comes to how oils and enamels react with certain mediums and their application, they are quite demanding on a technical level in terms of manual skills. The answer lies within how much you want to commit to push the grimdark style, how far you want to take it and what you want to express! By the way, those concept boards were all transmuted to miniatures, on the Grimdark Compendium website you can watch how to make one from start to finish and how to apply all those principles on your models, specifically the Episode 8 - The Undead, of the Guide to Mordheim. I hope the video has inspired you to try this out for yourself!
@TheMichaellathrop
@TheMichaellathrop 7 месяцев назад
So the use of a fur beard on the imperial great swordsman gave me a deliciously disturbing idea for some undead, basically cut the head off below the hat and then slice a skull just over the brow connect the together and then give it a fur beard, maybe also slice them both just above the mouth as well to have great sword neck and beard as well as had and just have nose eyes and brow from the skeleton before reassembling and furring. Other than that replace the hands with the skeletal variants.

So, realistic and semirealistic painting techniques, weird and unusual modelling techniques with various horror aesthetics, models represent (flawed) characters instead of nameless fodder (even if these characters ARE nameless fodder) and finally GO FUCKING NUTS. Did I get it right? I really should get back in the hobby.

I do love the grimdark stlye, but i would ask a question to those more knowledgeable. Is is possible to combine bright colour s d grimdark? When i picture grimdark i almost always envision a certain tie to lost glory. The last dregs of hope being desperately clung. Its hard to explain what i mean so an example. Take a miniature like the new freeguild stuff for AoS. Say you follow the grimdark style, chipped weapons flecked with rust, verdigris on the copper, distressed fabric and cracked leather. But what ive you have elememts of the banner with colour. A desperate bid to hold to lomg gone glory, holding onto the memory. Would that be grimdark stlye.
@DarkAgesWorkshop
@DarkAgesWorkshop 7 месяцев назад
I understand what you're trying to say. And I would say yeah it can be, totally. Bright colors are not "banned" in the grimdark style; it's about being creative with paint and modeling. As long as you convey it in a certain way, your message and vision of a decayed and long gone beauty could be absolutely awesome. You can totally do that and still maintain the grimdark style. Again, it's just not the rust, the dirt and distress. That is indeed an important aspect. But a big part resides in the composition and how you portray these characters, from the basing, to the mood they convey as they walk and bring the banners. There's lots of classic fantasy illustrators that still manage to capture a grimdark world with more bright colors!
