Ahh, the mood of that Emma painting with her iPhone, the darkness, I love it. Even though the subject isn’t dark, rather the opposite really. That one looks rainy or dreary and the colors are great. It’s got a jazz vibe.
The Eureka squinty faced Emma one is so so beautiful, the personality really jumps out. I clicked so quickly because I was captivated by the thumbnail.
That was so much fun to see the paintings that you choose to live with and what they mean to you. Thanks for the tour, they are all wonderful in their own way.😀
I love the dark rich colors and the contrast of the light in the painting of emma with a new phone, i think it just has such a romantic feel in an impressionistic style which I love
I've been watching Emma for some time, but I just came across your videos! I've always wanted to be an artist, but I'm a little scared though of being financially unstable. I also quit art class after middle school because I felt it took too much time, and I didn't really like the assignments we had to do. I also wanted to focus on academics for college etc. (I'm a senior in hs now) Recently though I've been painting for fun in my free time, and I remember how much I enjoy it! Mostly I've been painting my own cards for friends and family as gifts (also because I'm broke 😂). I really like the style of your art, especially after watching this video. I've never painted with anything besides acrylic paint, but you've inspired me to maybe branch out to oil paint in the future. Best of luck on your painting journey 😊 keep up the good work!
A real treat to see and hear about so many pieces ! As with music, if the artist likes the song or painting, people will usually like it too. Even when it's about something personal that one wouldn't think "the public" would relate with, that often seems to somehow work even better.
I agree! I've always trusted in that and it works. I've sold paintings in a wide range of subjects. If a painting is honest and well done it'll find a home eventually.
Your paintings always seem to convey a certain gentleness to them. Not sure how to describe it but overall.. Incredible. 🙏 They reflect your personality/spirit very well as far as I can tell😊
I only appreciate my paintings after a few years have passed and I have forgotten the process to a large degree. You have a really nice open disposition which is really pleasant to listen too.
that's kinda wierd but u remind me so much of my teacher in artschool. u have the same approach to painting. i mean keeping the painting super loose, working fast, focusing on big shapes, etc. your every video brings a smile on my face😁 because they are very comforting and inspiring.
Thank you for the very agreeable overview of what you have kept for your own walls. Especially like those at 4:00; 6:05; 7:00 and their bare-bones essentials of composition and paint.
This was lovely to look through your personal collection and hear all your thoughts and inspiration! I haven’t painted in oil paints in year, I’ve moved to more digital portraits recently but you’ve inspired me to get the brush and paints out again and try a landscape!!
Enjoyed that! Thought the painting of emma with the sunglasses was fantastic. You always seem to capture atmospheric perspective with so little. Not judging but iPhones at 10/11, christ what a world we live in Michael. I don't and won't have kid's,not sure I could deal with being a modern parent. Even the thought of social media gives me the shivers, and I'm only 36.
I know what you mean regarding the phone. I guess we didn't know what we were getting ourselves into. She actually researched the whole thing and used her own money. 😂
Thanks for the visit it was awesome. The painting with Emma and the car is flawless. Incredible how you managed to paint her features so accurate with her being your daughter because usually painting family is a struggle.
Thanks Martin. That painting came together pretty quickly and I'm convinced I just got lucky with her features. I realized how lucky I had gotten when I tried to reproduce the painting. I worked on her face for days on the reproduction and couldn't get it to look the same. And I had both paintings next to each other! I just couldn't reproduce her face as it appears in the original. I even used calipers! Couldn't do it. The new painting looked like Emma, but there was something missing.
chamberlainpaintings I understand, faces are very difficult and painting them twice is even worse. Not so long ago I had a commission and the guy wanted me to make the portrait of him, his daughter and his son on the same canvas and since they were stranded he handled me some bad pictures...it was HELL! I said yes because usually I say yes to everything challenging in life but this one was a pain in the ass. I had to make a bigger print of each picture, transfer them to the canvas, separate the nuances by marking them with a pencil as if it were a painting by numbers, then loose the strokes to hava a painting with feeling and finally it came out good but it took me a week of sweat. I admire those portrait painters who can make a beautiful portrait within a couple of hours without even thinking. Im not much into portraits and faces in paintings but I know it's necessary to know the craft.
Very very nice! I still count the pacific grove cypresses over the bed as one of my favs. You really have talent with portraits (people & pets) I’d love to see you develop that side even more!
It's so lovely hearing someone speak about some of their artistic work with joy and an appreciation for it , instead of self flagellation etc. Beautiful works!
Your edges on the one of Emma with her new cell phone, is just perfect! Emma’s hair was a tour de force-thin dark paint with various colors used in thick paint-dynamite!
I really enjoy your work. A bucket list item of mine is to buy a cityscape near the river in Chicago painted by you. It’s my favorite city in the world! Have you done any painting of the scenery there?
I see why they wanted to buy the one of baby-you with the ducks! I love it. My top five: the one I just mentioned, the one with the lone house in the pink cloud sunset, big one of emma on the boat, the one that is overpainted with the white house (probably my fave) and emma in sf!
I love how you explain everything. your whole family gives such positive vibes. I would love to see more from your life too or like a life story or something. or maybe a video with Emmas mom it would be so interesting.
Michael - I love your work, both your paintings and videos. I am making my way through your video library, and learning a lot. Do you have advice on painting city scapes and buildings? Unlike nature scenes, I find getting the many intersecting angles found in buildings reduces me to penciling in lines to then paint within. This feels like the tightest of tight painting, and like I've created my own paint by numbers. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing your collection Mike. All of them look great, and it's interesting to see how consistent they are as far as style or your method. I've been enjoying your videos for several days now, you're really a great person and artist!
I love your ability to do great portraiture too! I really admire your great talent, there’s a freshness, an optimism, such great execution of light and color.. well your colors are beautiful.
Montgomery Street, Emma squinting, and the house on the rocky cliff. ♥️♥️♥️You should name your paintings. This video goes with Emma's most recent upload!🤗🤩
Great video. Your paintings are probably the reflection of your mind and personality, they are pure, warm, relaxed, humble.... very nice feeling. Thank you Mister Chamberlain for sharing this! Pierre
Binge watching your videos in the background rn, while i try to finish my "creative response" art piece thats due tmrw 😭love your vids and calming & creative energy 💚💚💚
Beside the beauty in your art, I like your spirit. Coming from the art scene of NYC, I saw a lot of snobby self-centered artists here. You, instead, come out as genuine and very pleasing creative person! All the best :)
Thanx Mike. Loved the tour. Would love to know what painters like Zorn , Sarolla , Velasquez etc. would of kept back for their own inspiration. Your so right about shadows. I work harder inside shadows than out. Last three in particular , boiled my egg. Thanx again Mike. Hwyl from Cymru
I love your technique sooo much! Do you have a video where you show how you mix your paint? I can't get my paint to flow as smoothly as yours. I make half a stroke and all the paint's gone.
I really enjoyed the tour and I honestly couldn’t say which painting I preferred because they are all wonderful. When you create a painting to sell that you are really pleased do you feel reluctant to sell it?
You are really inspiring me to try to find the time to paint more, what an amazing painter you are!! the light and simple lines of your paintings remind me a bit of Edward Hopper, with a clean spin unique to you. Truly inspiring work! 🥰
