There's a reason when I run them with my FC, i WANT a paladin and a ranged DPS, shield bash is amazing enough, having 2 jobs that can interrupt absolutely shuts down some otherwise annoying/dangerous mobs. prime example when we got 7 chimera's in a row in PotD, we could just tank and spank them without worry of moving for mechanics and pulling another mob.

Its this why I wish Paladin was just better in DD. WAR being the best solo tank and a few othersfeel wrong in design where the flaor should go to Paladin.

Ohhhh the Req upgrade also has range :O It's not always an issue, but sometimes it can be a bit annoying that you need to in melee range to get the req going. Nice QoL change \o/ 1:40

because it's actually fairly huge as a change, now it's officially a half ranged half melee tank which is awesome cuz i'll never worry again to start my burst phase unlike before which was super annoying that i had to get close

Some people spend more time in deep dungeons than savage/ultimate. So Shield Bash is an awkward thing to change, because adjusting it for one group could ruin it for the other. Cover is a better example of something actually needing a change because it's niche for everyone.

imperator ( requiescat) being 25 y is the biggest change to pld this expansion. this finally lets you mess aroung with goring blade timers and melee towntime a bit more since you can now start confiteors from narnia

P10S was really annoying for this since you had to move things around and actually use the holy spirits to try to keep the most uptime for turrets.

Regarding multiplicative damage reduction, for those who want the math behind it: Let's say you apply a 30% mitigation. That means all damage you receive is multiplied by 0.7 (you're receiving 70% of the total damage). Now, if you also apply a 20% mitigation, said damage is multiplied by 0.8 on top. With both mitigation together, damage is multiplied by 0.7 * 0.8 = 0.56 which means that damage is technically only reduced by 44% (instead of the whole 30% + 20%). The more mitigations you add, the more this multiplicative effect reduces the effectiveness of the added mitigations. Barriers, on the other hand, can perfectly stack with a damage reduction without losing any effectiveness because they're simply temporarily increasing your health pool.

That is exactly how it goes. The reason 40% mitigation with 1K shields is better than 50% mitigation is because the shield is also getting an effective hp increase thanks to the mitigation.

Keep in mind, Pally just automatically has an extra mit that other tanks don't, in the chance to Block with the shield. You still have the Parry chance, but the Block can apply to magic attacks, and seems to roughly happen about 40% of the time. If you have a comparible shield in iLevel to what you're fighting, the reduction when it procs is typically 19%, so that equates to about an average 8% less damage then other tanks. I'm not saying it's an excuse for Hallowed Ground's rediculous cooldown... But it might paint a picture as to why they're thinking the way they are for Paladin.

No, the block is there to offset the innate healing the other tanks have (brutal shell, soul eater and both storms for war give healing). In addition, when you think about it, Bulwark is just a small moment where you get to put that block chance to use, where the other tanks actually get something added.

To clarify, you are correct, but it's not "an extra mitigation" as in most cases its actually WORSE than the innate sustain the other tanks have due to not interacting with boss autos as well as those do. Blocking happens 20% of the time, not 40.

Blocking is amazing. It's also terrible. Because it is random mitigation. It's definitely a design that's from ARR where random dicerolls were core to the game design, which really hasn't existed since Shadowbringers removed most RNG on everything.

Shield Bash being on the global cooldown is what hurts it the most. There's several ways to improve it, depending on who you ask, but making it an off global cooldown skill is the first thing they need to do.

If you think about it because its potency based that makes it even strong, I'm pretty sure your healing buff from rampart will effect it too and the shield can Crit as its potency based instead of percent

An idea for cover is to make it a buff you apply to party member like Kardia except it grants the covered member the same block chance as the PLD while in 15yalms and you can active a separate dash skill to jump to your covered party member

Block chance for a short duration is bad as Eye for an Eye. It could not proc at all entire time. Instead, Cover go back to way it was before, take half the damage the ally target would receive and remove job gauge cost

@@HyouVizer but you wouldn't be using on a dps in a clutch then but on a co tank, having block chance on your co tank would be actually insanely good for raids, in savage mitigating autos often takes more recources than mitigating tankbusters

​@Ratpaa covers current issue is the gauge cost. It eats a sheltron or intervention usage for a worse trade off than just provoke/shirk and useing those skills for urself and your cotank. The 2min cd is a mute issue, in every instance its more cost effective to provoke and sheltron. Covering a dps is fine but takes stupidly fast reaction time to realize what happend and find the dps to cover. The gauge cost has to go. The 20% mitigation could come back but i think it be better to be 10% cause at 20% it was broken in stormblood.

Shield Bash definitely needs something but idk what. It's really good in Deep Dungeons, but since Endwalker WAR is basically immortal, I found myself picking WAR over PLD anyways :/

I think what they could do for the Invulns is to adjust the relative cooldowns between them. WAR is 4m, DRK is 5m, GNB is 6m, PLD is 7m. They all have a minute between them. I think if they changed is such that there's only 30s between tiers that Hallowed Ground would become generally as useful as Superbolide is for tanking situations while also generally buffing the rest such that WAR is still 4m, DRK is 4.5m, GUN is 5m, and PLD is 5.5m. If you want to translate to seconds, that's 240, 270, 300, and 330 respectively.

I feel like with Cover they got scared by how good it was in O12S and nerfed the fuck out of it. I think that if it's going to cost gauge they should at least add the Rampart back to it so it has a purpose. When it comes to Hallowed I honestly think the devs don't understand what makes an invuln good. Remember going into Shadowbringers when Yoshi P thought Hallowed was too strong and all the raiders were like "but Holmgang is a 3 minute cooldown, it's much stronger"? They think "full invincibility" is a lot better than it really is, but also they killed the one good thing about it because now most Damage Downs go through it so you can't even use it for greeding. Also, HALLOWED IS SO FUCKING SLOW, there is no reason that the probably worst invuln with the 7 fucking minute cooldown needs to take almost a full second to apply while Holmgang is instant. Probably unpopular opinion but personally I think that invulns distort tank mechanics in fights to the extent that Hallowed and Superbolide are the more balanced ones and they should add a minute to the cooldowns of Holmgang and Living Dead.

you're not wrong on all accounts. for example in DSR, if you got a WAR with you, your entire mitigation plan changes, since WAR can immune most big TBs. Like if you go into P2, generally the MT invulns the 2nd TB, then the MT invulns the soul tethers in P3 again, and then the final invuln is at the end of P6, no invulns in P7. meanwhile if you bring a WAR, the WAR invulns the 1st TB in P2, you both invuln the soul tethers in P3, after that it's pretty much the same again, so your entire mit plan changes simply because someone brings a WAR or not, it's actually stupid and it's simply because of Holmgang. but then again, Yoshi has a stupidly bad habit on speaking about something he has 0 idea on, as you said, that he called Hallowed the strongest immunity during SHB, meanwhile everyone is like "but... holmgang exists?" or when he was saying that if you wanted engaging healer content, go play ultimates. or when there was a massive healer shortage during the 2nd EW raid tier, he said "there isn't a healer shortage, this also happened with tanks in Stormblood" which that never even happened in Stormblood to my knowledge.

Maybe a way to balance HG while keeping it unique could be to implement a mechanic to reduce its cd. Say every time you use your gauge it shaves off a few seconds.

@@fallentwonine7450 There is a mathematical limit to how much gauge you can produce within a given time. You just balance the numbers low enough so that the endresult would be roughly around what you want the CD to be. If you for example want it to be around 6 min at the end, you would aim at around 4 seconds shave off (22,4 sec to produce 50 gauge, around 16 uses in 6 min, 16*4 = 64).

Honestly, I just want Hallowed to not force me to have a super different mit plan with every tank combo comparitively all cuz my INV is a min longer. I want intervene to be 70 and not 74 as being the only tank at 70 and lower to never be able to gap close. Cover needs to be changed, shield bash isnt even on my bar.

I disagree about Hallowed Ground. I think they could reduce it's cd by a minute and not change any of the other tank invulns. I get it doesn't have the trade off that the other 3 usually have but as you said the 0 damage means nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Bolide is objectively better HG due to the downside not mattering. Tank invulns USUALLY come at a time where the entire group isn't getting blasted (there are exceptions like HH from P10S) so having 10 years to top the GNB up is so unbelievably whatever. Hell, it gives the SGE something to spend Addersgall on that isn't themselves sitting at full health.

The problem with utility abilities like shield bash and sleep isn't the abilities themselves. It's a problem with encounter design.

completely agree. If they changed encounter designs to make Bash, stuns, sleep, interrupts, roots, that would imo spice things up a bit. WoW battle design is an example.

i use shield bash when healers are struggling in dungeons spamming it on a pack of mobs is free mit if the fight is dragging out, otherwise its good for stunning mobs with interuptable cds which albeit is very few. but still useful. i agree it needs some love

Cover is good very situationally. But as someone who does party finder EXs and Savages, I can't even tell you how many times a raid wide or a mech would have wiped the run if I didn't cover a healer who then hit LB3, or if healers are down, then cover the rdm or smn. If you know what you're doing, then yeah, useless, but can be invaluable with idiot pugs. Would be great if it was better and usable outside those places, but even without I actually use it fairly often.

It'll feel the same, it's just on a different button. The function is the same. A weird "extra" GCD that is thrown into the combo that screws the Paladin out of a perfect 1 min loop rotation (assuming skill speed which you won't build anyway) Its still the same unfun button it's always been since the rework.

So just a thought when talking about Tank Invulns. If PLD is too long of a cooldown, and Holmgang is seen as an amazing invuln partially because its cooldown is 4 minutes, what if just three of the invulns are changed? So instead of the cooldowns going 4, 5, 6, 7 minutes, what about 4, 4:40, 5:20, and 6 minutes, or something to that effect? It seems like there might not be a great way to balance this, but just to explain my thoughts, this gets PLD into that 6 min area that seems to be more acceptable by xeems standards, gets the other two a bit of a buff as well without homogenizing them, and allows holmgang to still shine as the best one for us WAR mains? I've only been playing and raiding for a few years so maybe there is way more nuance to this than I know.

Make Cover like Closed Position. Use it once and forget it unless you want to switch. Change up the mitigation amount to compensate.

I think Having Hallowed at 300 sec, Bolide and Living Dead at 270 sec and Holmgang 240 sec would be a good compromise. The healing kits are so strong now that living dead and Holmgangs not true invulns dont matter and Bolide is just a I shot msyelf for Hallowed.

Hollowed being on a longer cooldown wouldn't be an issue if they stopped making invulning twice before 7 minutes good. Yes, you can simply do taunt swaps or shared soaks and not use invulns, but the amount of tank fails you get in like P11S due to the other tank not taunting on the 2nd set of busters is REALLY HIGH considering you only have to swap there if there is a PLD.

The only time shield bash was useful was in Eden s8 shiva , where paladin can stun twice in a row . Thats it. Otherwise the whole job is perfect :)

Shield Bash can definetly be reworked, not exactly how i suggested to some. but still reworked. it should definetly not break any combos, and maybe make one GCD act like ogcd.

Just make it AoE who cares. WHM gets to stun packs for 10 years in dungeons as well so it isn't like it'll be "OP" or anything.

Cover should be a lower cooldown for sure and the 2 min cooldown make people forget the skill existed most of the time.

Shield bash is more for side content, like deep dungeons. Same for Clemency, very niche. Cover is just ass, regardless. Even with the Cover strat in 12s, im usually jus like bro I aint got anywhere else to use my defensives, stop it. And yeah 420 sec cd is jus too much for the invuln.

I'm surprised they didn't add Clemency as a buffed instant cast option alongside Holy Spirit after the 1-2-3. It would be a straight up damage loss to use it (since you aren't using a GCD on damage), but could at least have some uses to help out on prog.

Dead ass surprised Shield Bash survived to see another xpac. Same with Cover, though I think they could either remove the gauge cost or lower the cd...or even better, leave both but give it the damage reduction it had in SB. Feels underwhelming for something with a 2 min cd and a gauge cost, even with it's niche use situations. Shame they didn't make some sort of flashy shield bash-esque animation as part of the new Atonement combo and put that button out to pasture. I haven't had it on my hotbars since EW launch because the job already has so many buttons.

Shield Bash has been nothing short of incredible in PvP so I’m perfectly happy to see it stick around. Though I will concede that it really needs some love on the PvE side.

I love hallowed ground, I use it every duty at some point, but that's the big issues, I can use it once. My thinking is maybe reduce the CD but have it channeled like passage of arms where you bask in a holy light where you aren't taking damage but aren't doing any, though they'd need to do something to maintain enmity, or just use it as a toss up. No damage taken, but also no damage dealt and risk losing enmity, so it could be a shorter CD, and could be cancelled if movement or attacking

The only time I've ever used Cover was in 2-man unsynched Rathalos to eat fireballs for a DPS... every 2 minutes. Feels like the only reason it's even in the game is just because it's the Knight/Paladin signature ability in the old FFs. If they put some thought into it, they could make it something like Cecil's auto-Cover for low-HP allies. Make it a passive that you toggle on/off, and when it's active you eat the damage if a party member is going to take a killing blow. Something like that.

Cover is a niche/novelty ability, its just something else you can do. Gives jobs/classes some flavor without making them a must have in a party. I don't think every ability needs to be crammed into your rotation/plan. I mean, imagine you add some weird novelty skills on other tanks aswell: Warrior should be able to pickup another player and throw them to a safespot, that would be sick... you would barely use it, but damn I would love that.

Since they removed the block focus on paladin skills I think the idea of going Mitigation plus Barrier can be a real cool idea to set PLD apart

I like cover. It only would need some more distance. Its one of the skills, why Paladin is my favro Tank. Because its protect others (best use was it, by protecting a other player again the aoe attack in the fight with the 2 gods).

nah, Cover was insanely useful in SB due to it having a rampart build in for the entire duration, on top that your buffs would transfer. for example in SB O5S, bards didn't have a knockback immunity, so I popped my knockback immunity and covered the bard, then they also had a knockback. or during P11S when the auto's was magical based, so DRK would generally be prefered, to avoid tank swapping I just covered the MT and stepped out of range when the TB went off so I would take the debuff instead of the MT. but again, that was good because Rampart was build into Cover, so for 50 gauge, you would take someones damage, you would naturally mitigate that by 20% (on top of what you would normally use) now it's a 50 gauge spender for just taking someones debuff/damage and you still gotta use your normal mits. meanwhile you can also just give someone intervention (which comes with it's own benefits) or just use holy sheltron, Cover is just insanely outclassed now.

@@DarkDyllon Not sure. I was saved multiple times by it. In the early 90er dungeons. Where it was a common scenario, that healer and other DD died from mechanic. While i was a Blm (who are not knowed for high def, healing power and so on). The tank, Paladin, was than allways busy, to take the role of the healer to and used Cover on me to, when unavoidable aoe attack was coming. So, that whe beated the both than in nearly all cases with only 2 men (a few times became it a 1 man show or a wipe then).

Was hoping to see something announced about invuln cds like : holmgang stays at 4min living dead lowered to 4m30 bolide lowered to 5min hallowed ground lowered to 5min30 Dumb cd reduction but still have a hierarchy between invulns (even if based on false casual assumption of "no damage taken=stronger")

The main problem with cover is that it uses my holy sheltron gauge and I might see a situation where cover is good and I'm on 40 gauge Also hallowed still not homogenised, the only thing 0 damage does is makes it comfy for healers in dungeons, but look at TOP, I learned that fight with a static on PLD, fuck PFing it though because no hold=death in that fight so rather than hold people would exclude PLD or let them die

Since buffed Holy Spirit’s potency is 450, and the two new atonement combo attacks are 460 and 480, does that mean it will be better to use atonement before fight or flight? Like an opener that goes 1, 2, 3, atonement, then fight or flight burst? That way, after the blades of valor combo, you can get in buffed Holy Spirit and the two new combo abilities?

6:28 Sheild bash is good for pulls with mobs that have interuptable casts going off at same time and u really dont trust the dps to do anything. Like the twinning, that big pull b4 second boss i believe. U can use interject plus bash for the first set of buffs. Amd if they get a second set casting you can low blow bash and cc them yourself. Honestly i think the real issue is the devs need to be brave and actually make dungeons need these buttons instead of just removing the buttons.

god i really hope tanks start taking tons of damage. i know we've said this for the last 2 expac when it seems like outgoing damage going up but these new 40% DRs are nuts if damage taken isnt increasing. I mean tank busters need to start hitting for near 500k bare

I just wish they got SOME form of healing level 50 or under, like, say... Every other tank innately has on their 123 combo. While Pally is amazing when you get to high level, it plays like trash in ARR, you can't even really handle Fates without having a healer with you or carrying... *Gasp* Potions. and no, I tried it, the chocobo doesn't help enough.

Something that I've noticed (might be wrong) is Supplication Ready buff is 30s for each cast so PLD might be able to hold Atonement combo for like 1min-ish (Might feel forced to do 4 Atone for optimal rotation because last hit atone also hit harder?). Also Imperator cast is 25y is also nice change because sometime it felt really bad to go into melee to cast Req and then go out to cast the Magic Combo

it doesn't matter. You don't want to delay FoF or Req anyway, so whatever "adjustment" you do will only matter for the first time you do it and from there you'll always just use whichever ones you have there. That's why there's only a 30 potency difference betwee atonement and supplication and 10 more for Sepulcher. If its too different in potencies, then bursting feels wrong because you actually have NO control over which ones you are using each minute untill you delay FoF to the point of losing usages.

Honestly, at this point I vote for having all invulns to just be removed. If tank mits keep getting this powerful, like xeno said, it just keeps closing the gap with invulns. Also, having stronger tank mits already make healers less valuable. Now having both stronger tank mits and invulns just make healers even less valuable. So either we DT needs to have some really hard hitting dmg (more autos, more dot on tank busters, more dot on raid wides and more frequent hard hitting mechanics), or invulns should just get removed entirely. Having invulns removed will also make tanks and healers having to play the game normally too.

Cover could be reworked to be like kardia or dance partner. You tether to one person and give them a permanent mit of some % or conditional shield, that maybe comes online when you cast sheltron or smth.

Kardia is exclusively used on main tank outside of some verry niche moments, throwing a quick ogcd is always better than swapping kardia to a dps so should kardia disapear too? there is nothing wrong with a move designed to be for a c tank to be used on a co tank. by your logic most moves don't deserve to exist because you always use them in the same way

@@luckytanuki5449 kardia only synergises with one abilirt which buffs it, it's something you completely ignore for the whole fight, also no one said that idea was a finished product, you can absolutely build in kit synergies around it, it could for example interact with your oath gauge. Make it more active by having it have effects on and off, when it's off it buffs your block chance and after placing it on a co tank you give them your whole block chance for the duration but lose your own, make it effectively defensive dance partner etc. There's alot of way thos core idea can be build upon, when off tanking you alr are constantly throwing stuff to your main tank for autos and busters, so the argumeny about not tanks noy being supports falls flat

​@Ratpaa yeah idk what he is on about. PLD is already the poster boy offtank due to having the best external (intervention has a theoretical 2 charges) and passage isn't ideal for MT since you ideally don't want the entire party behind you (and thus in front of the boss).

Buff on other person, spreads part of active MIT like intervention. Since HG means you actually have to do TBs correctly, this lets PLD make up for it in a unique way. Makes it so the other tank doesn't have to completely re-map their mit plan.

One of the funniest things when I was progging DSR on WAR MT with PLD OT was if p5 went pear shaped after wrath, I was just invulning that buster anyway. He does one auto before the buster and then no auto's after said buster so it REALLY let the healers/caster (if not BLM lol) triage to get people up for DOTH just to practice because there was ZERO risk of me dying even if I accidentally popped invuln early. Not taking any damage wasn't a make or break. I could just bump myself up with equilibrium to give the healers a hand and even nascent flash someone just rezzed to help heal em up with my GCD's even AFTER yeeting it at whoever had the defamation jump during wrath. It was and still is a giant meme that I got 5 invulns vs their 2. I dunno how they could improve it without rocking the boat tbh, people get mad if you sneeze wrong in this game its obnoxious lmao. Shield bash I feel should either combo with holy sheltron (not necessarily replace it like other GCD skills do) to do fat damage if you're got it up as like... Implying you're mitigating a hit and beating the fuck out of whatevers hitting you in return, OR just make it an ability/GCD that does just fat damage and keeps the stun. It's useful in deep dungeons. Fuck man, rip shit from wow and make your shield bash make your shield lob ping pong between mobs in a 5-10y range and have that do increased damage as well. Make it a weave? Like there's so much cool stuff that COULD be done with those abilities because... What the hell is the point in having a shield if I don't use it visually in my attacks n stuff?? Holy sheltron doesn't look like I use it, neither does bulwark. They're just pretty effects on the player. I DUNNO MAN. PLD COULD BE WAY COOLER TO PLAY AESTHETICALLY IF THEY ACTUALLY DID SOMETHING WITH ""USELESS"" THINGS.

Hallowed could get a cooldown reduction to bring it down to the same as bolide or maybe even a little lower, and you could just give a little extra thing to the others like bolide gets a hoc heal when it expires, living dead gives a free dark arts and holm gives you a free inner chaos when it expires or something, that way you fix plds invuln and make it not the only thing getting buffed

Fact rotation are the same seem good to me. I mostly would like HG to get shorter, 7 min is way to long, almost twice as long CD as holmgang. Playing TEA as PLD is a pain due to that. Lower it by 1-2 min and make it so it mit 99.9% of damage or something instead xD Also sad that cover is never used since i think it has the coolest Icon by far.
