The state and central government are encouraging the expansion of palm oil cultivation in Mizoram. However, threats to biodiversity, groundwater levels and soil fertility due to palm oil, have environmentalists, economic planners and farmers divided regarding the expansion of this crop in the biodiversity-rich state.
India is the largest importer of palm oil. Recently, the union cabinet also approved the National Mission on Edible Oils - Oil Palm with a special focus on the northeast region and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
